    :shock: My immediate reaction was WTF for?!? I've known for about 15 - 20 minutes now and I'm still asking myself the same question. I like Obama and have faith that he may do some good things down the road but the fact remains his country is still occupying two other nations.

    has he got israel to retreat to its pre 1967 borders???? what has he done for peace in afghanistan?? is iraq still occupied?? has he leant on the burmese military junta about releasing aung san suu kyi??? has he reached a hand out to havana and lifted the embargo thats crippled cuba for all these myopic years?????? what exactly has he done???

    Same here, my reaction was like "Wow, that went fast!" I'm very respective of the guy and supportive of a lot of what he does (or tries to do), but giving him the NPP at this time seems a bit overblown.

    On the other hand it might help to give the ongoing diplomatic discussions with other countries a new impulse, so who knows, maybe it's a good thing after all.

    I wonder what he'll do with the 1.5 million $...

    The Nobel Peace Prize for 2009

    The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

    Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama's initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.

    Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population.

    For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world's leading spokesman. The Committee endorses Obama's appeal that "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges."

    He was only president for 2 weeks before the nomination deadline... isn't the Nobel Peace Prize for what you do, not what you say you are going to do? And it still hasn't been done yet.

    This a crock of shit, give me somthing concrete first. I wonder what will said after Obama sends more troops into afghanistan? It will like 3 stooges pie in the face of the commitee when this happens. As far as I've seen this country has not been a symbol of peace for many many years.
