I guess my point is this: If they gave the prize to Joe Shuck of Argentina...no one would give a shit...no one would be up in arms...no one would be bitching...attach Obama's name to something and suddenly it's a HUGE issue....

Honestly, I don't know the criteria for this award...I wasn't in the deliberations...obviously the fine folks who made the choice felt he deserved it...it's not like he went out and lobbied for it...

the man was given an award...it's not like the world ended...

    or has it... ;)

i think that's nonsense, because a lot of the people in here that don't get it (including me) are obama supporters. i voted for him, i think he's doing a decent job, and i think the histrionic reaction to him on the right is absurd. but that doesn't mean he deserves a damn peace prize. it just surprises me... i always thought the nobels had a bit of merit, but apparently they're no more than a glorified beauty pageant.

as to joe schuck, i don't know who that is. if it was announced i'd wonder what the hell he did to further world peace too. but i'd WONDER. i KNOW obama hasn't done anything on that front yet. he may in time, but he hasn't yet. so the award doesn't make sense.

it makes me wonder what the hell the criteria are. hell, i was pretty skeptical when gore won it and said so at the time, but at least he could point to some sort of achievements given his role in the clinton admin and global warming. i still wasn't sold, but it was something. i like obama, but i can't imagine what criteria he possibly fits.

I hear you and I don't disagree...but I do think you're discounting the Obama effect, i.e., anything attached to him is a lighting rod...

I do wonder about the criteria, sure...am I bothered or angry (like some) that he was given this award...nope...

to me, it's amazing that him being given this award is a bad thing...to me, this is just another item to discuss, beat to death, discuss, somehow make it out to be his fault, and beat to death some more...until the next thing pops up in the news cycle...

for me, I'm bit taken back by the pure anger about this...wondering is good, I respect that...I guess I was a bit taken back by being called a fool because I think those who handed out the award know more about the award than I do...thus, I'm ok with accepting it...that's all...

when that seems to be your only criteria for accepting the decision then yes its foolish. you are allowed to disagree with the nobel committee if you see no grounds for agreeance. surely youre aware of what obamas done.or not done as the case may be, since being in office?? do you believe he deserves this award?? if so then please tell me why you think so?? that was my original question to you and you have yet to answer aside from telling me that a bunch of scandinavians must know what theyre doing so who are you to question them.
you say tis not a bad thing... then tell me why its a good thing.

im not angry but i do think its fucking ridiculous that with all the turmoil in the world obama is given this award when hes done nothing concrete and the turmoil continues. he pays lip service to the peace process. and i am not ok with accepting it.

i didn't see anyone blaming obama for this or saying it's his fault. i've seen a lot of 'what the fuck is wrong with the nobel committee' vibe though. it really undermines the credibility of what i had thought was a prestigious award.

that was on helluva jump, for sure. or, at least he said it was going to be. kudos to the olympic committe for taking his word for it and sparing all of us having to actually wait to see if he pulls it off as promised. it's so old-fashioned to expect somebody to achieve something before we congratulate them for it.

so i'm watching cnn and they are doing a story on how many more troops obama is going to send to Afghanistan

is that what he won the award for?

    i'm very confused

why do you worry about my criteria...? why is it important that I justify anything to you...?

here's a some food for thought:

"He got the prize because he has been able to change the international climate," Nobel Committee chairman Thorbjoern Jagland said. "Some people say, and I understand it, isn't it premature? Too early? Well, I'd say then that it could be too late to respond three years from now. It is now that we have the opportunity to respond — all of us."

    and

Former Peace Prize winner Mohamed ElBaradei, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, said Obama has already provided outstanding leadership in the effort to prevent nuclear proliferation.

"In less than a year in office, he has transformed the way we look at ourselves and the world we live in and rekindled hope for a world at peace with itself," ElBaradei said. "He has shown an unshakable commitment to diplomacy, mutual respect and dialogue as the best means of resolving conflicts."

yes yes i read all that and other links besides. but still the question remains. what exactly has obama done to warrant this award??? what El Barradei says about obamas efforts at stopping nuclear proliferation are ridiculous. what has he done expect crap on about iran?? an unshakable commitment to diplomacy??? hmmm if by diplomacy El Barradei means rhetoric then sure obamas an absolute winner.

oh you dont have to justify yourself to me. i simply asked a question. and you seem incapable of answering. but thats ok... i guess... cause i really didnt expect you to be able to anyway.

It seemed like it was simple when Bush was President. Now that it's Obama...well....it's acceptable that things are complicated.

  • I don't get it either... I like the guy and voted for him, but besides toning down our foreign policy a bit, he has done nothing to earn this.

I haven't checked out who was in the running, but someone got screwed out of getting this award.
