Same here, my reaction was like "Wow, that went fast!" I'm very respective of the guy and supportive of a lot of what he does (or tries to do), but giving him the NPP at this time seems a bit overblown.

On the other hand it might help to give the ongoing diplomatic discussions with other countries a new impulse, so who knows, maybe it's a good thing after all.

I wonder what he'll do with the 1.5 million $...

Here is the official announcement of the Committee:
The Nobel Peace Prize for 2009

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama's initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.

Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population.

For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world's leading spokesman. The Committee endorses Obama's appeal that "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges."

    congrats to Obama...good for him...

it's funny how this will make heads explode...I'm looking forward all the whining and moaning....
  • He was only president for 2 weeks before the nomination deadline... isn't the Nobel Peace Prize for what you do, not what you say you are going to do? And it still hasn't been done yet.

This a crock of shit, give me somthing concrete first. I wonder what will said after Obama sends more troops into afghanistan? It will like 3 stooges pie in the face of the commitee when this happens. As far as I've seen this country has not been a symbol of peace for many many years.

Maybe it was for closing Guantanamo Bay.....oh wait...

Maybe it was for getting the troops home - "just get'em home"....nevermind....

Yup, I mean Obama could just snap his fingers once and everything would be fine, so why the hell doesn't he just do that?

 I believe this was accepted as the new "sarcasm" sign in another thread.

9 months into office and it is way too soon for this sort of praise without any solid results. Saying that, it's also too soon to be taking the shots from the right he has had.

I think he and Bernanke prevented the next Great Depression thus preventing all-out choas and destruction ergo, he deserves the Peace Prize.

hmm well ... i truly believe the peace prize is a universal recognition of a universal peace, or concrete steps towards that peace. ive not seen that from obama. like all politicians he talks but thats about it.

american are so myopic at times... my own government took great steps that were successful to ensure our economy didnt fall into the great wall street abyss... so wheres their peace prize????

i'm with you there. he's certainly leading this country in a better direction than the last administration, but what has he actually DONE to merit a nobel peace prize? anyone?

So........he's nominated just a few weeks into his presidency. So his nomination was based on rhetoric and promises. 9 months in, he hasn't delivered on any of his promises, not a single one. That would be like me saying, I'm going to win the NY City Marathon, and being awarded the prize money a 1/4 mile into the race. If nothing else, this along with some of the past winners, show exactly how worthless this stupid award really is.

i just saw snippets on this on CNN when i first got into work. i think the 2004? NPPW was talking about obama and all he has done, is doing, that is for the good of us all. i really didn't listen to much, i had to get to my cube to work(aka post here :P) but i thought, hmmmmm...i just don't get it. :? i agree, too much too soon! hell, it's like he was chosen simply b/c most of the world hated bush(i agree with that) and are simply to see and hear an intelligent guy in the white house with ideas. definitely seems a bit 'much' since not much has been put into practice yet. would've been better a fe years from now.....
    Stay with me...

don't they give out nobel prizes for science and economics and literature too? if it's about his efforts to avoid a total worldwide depression... it'd think a nobel prize for economics makes sense. your argument is totally fucking absurd. that's like saying kevin bacon deserves an oscar because you can connect him to the real oscar winner in less than 2 moves. be real.
