Yup, and god for bid if they say the word GOD during the Pledge of Aliegance to the Flag. I think that's a big no-no these days also. That's o.k., when my daughter starts school i'll tell her to say it loud and say it proud.

You might want to have your daughter include the salute that originally went along with the pledge:

Let's make a deal. I'll stop my pathetic whining about under god if you stop your pathetic whining about grade schoolers singing a song about the first black president. deal?

    Um.. yeah..?

Look, I know you're terrified that the kids won't buy your big bag of bullshit.. But that's just possibly going to happen. If you were just fine with the President reading books to kids 8 years ago, you'll have to be OK with the president giving speeches to them now. If you were OK with kids singing songs about Dubya and Hurricane Katrina, you'll have to deal with kids singing songs about Obama and "yes we can."

Another Bullshit lie from you. There are no schools where they don't say "One Nation Under God," even though tha was added to appease you people in the 1950s... it's not part of the original pledge.

i dunno, how is a kid going to relate to george washington carver when what he did has no real impact on their daily life? obama is the first african american president. to me and alot of people that is the most historical and important moment in all of african american history.

No real impact on their daily lives  How many Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwiches did you eat when you were a kid that age. He was a world renowned scientist for gods sake he discovered hundreds of uses for the peanut. and you are gonna say what kind of impact did he have. the minute we have to get permission slips to teach kids about civics is the minute our educational system jumps the shark

This is not teaching kids civics. It would be different if they were teaching them about the POSITION OF THE PRESIDENCY. Not singing songs about Obama or any other president for that matter. PUBLIC schools are not suppose to be doing things like this.
it is apparent that you do not know much, and are missing my point entirely. you can attack me and dismiss or ignore the point i made about this being the most historical accomplishment in african american history all you want, i really don't care. do you know how ridiculous you sound? it says a lot about you if you believe that peanut butter is a more significant achievement than an african american winning the election, in a landslide no less. three generations ago african americans were not even allowed to vote. many people white and black died in the struggle to give them that right. i would say obama's election is 1,000,000% more significant and will have a much more significant impact on those kids and their future than a stupidass peanut butter and jelly sandwich. we are living history right now. seriously, how is a 3rd grade inner city kid (for example) going to relate to a guy that discovered uses for the peanut, when he has someone he can aspire to be like that is a good role model that is living and governing now and encouraging them to make something of themselves? someone he can watch on tv and access on youtube if he wants.

seriously, when you were that age what did you know about the presidency? to be honest, all i knew was reagan said "Well" a lot and ate alot of jelly beans and he was the "most powerful man in the country". when i was a kid i did not know he was a wanker and that he would implement an entire economic system that has screwed the middle class from then on. all i thought is he was a nice old man. and i am sure that is what kids think today. kids do not get caught up in world affairs and politics and the issues that you have with public schools. they are KIDS. all they care about is playing with their friends and participating in class activities, which the song is a class activity.

i will make a deal with you, i will let you say under god in the pledge of allegience in public school (which is indoctrination by the way) if you will let these kids sing the song and if you keep the military recruiters out of the schools. if you don't like it, hey send them to a private school or educate them yourself.

  • What's so funny is that the phony indignation machine has crash-landed into the wall...

Parents were given the words ahead of time and they all approved it... This was MONTHS ago for Black History month.. nobody cared and it was a 1-minute part of a half-hour program about famous black people in history.

I think we can all agree that the first black president is going to be "famous" for a while.

I said it in my first post in this thread and I'm declaring myself "right."

    This is petty crap.

There is no question mark in your post... what was the question? I agree Jesus Camp isn't the same, but how are the Katrina Kids different? And how is one minute of song in one school paying tribute to the first black president in US history as part of a long 30 minute program honoring dozens of other historic black American leaders during an event for black history month that was approved by the parents... how is that some sort of massive, universal child indoctrination plan put into place by Obama?
  • My question was if these kids were singing to George bush (in a public school ) would they still feel the same about it. And not only that this is not just one isolated case. another on just popped up in Ashville N.C. Just go on you tube and you will see what Im talking about.

Look I have no problem with a teacher Teaching children about Obama and what he has acomplished. You got that gimmiesometruth ? But when you start singing songs and politicizing in a public school it's wrong.and to be fair I don't think that Obama had anything to do with this. and from what I heard the parents didn' know about it. I could be wrong though.

It's not politicizing though. Didn't you ever learn the alphabet song? Teachers have kids sing songs and do projects like this all the time to help them learn things. Did the fact that I was told to produce a report on the accomplishments of Charles Goodyear mean I was being indoctrinated into thinking blimps are awesome? It's a black history thing, where instead of a lecture they won't listen to the kids are encouraged to create this song/show in order to learn about black history, of which Obama is a pretty significant part. There's nothing political about it. Is it trumpeting health care reform? Calling republicans bitches? Arguing for a bureau of consumer protection and redistributing the power of the Fed? No. Because it's not political, it has nothing to do with his politics. It's just a celebration of the election of our first black president, with no comment on his policies or anything else. The song would be the same if Obama was a republican... because it's not about his politics it's about what his election means to a historically marginalized group in our society.

And no, I wouldn't give a shit if the song had been about Dubya in the context in which these songs are being sung. That's what kids do. We sang all sorts of lame patriotic or historical tunes in my grade school, and I didn't turn into a Reagan republican or anything because of it, and that's not what anyone was trying to accomplish.

I guess you can make an argument that it's a different thing... but my point doesn't really change much.

This was a very short little number in a much longer production about famous black people through history, the parents all approved the program and it happened months ago.

This is just manufactured phony outrage and you know it. Kids have always learned about individual presidents, the office and historical figures without being told "this guy was good" or "this guy was bad."

George Bush used to go into kindergarten classes and read books to the kids and nobody complained or accused him of "indoctrination." Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton.. they both went to schools to talk to kids... this is the first time anyone has ever made a stink.

Are you serious? To be a fly on the wall for some of those conversations :) Never would've pictured you two rooming together for a weekend! Glad you enjoyed Chicago though. It is an amazing city, probably my favorite. So much to do there, especially in the summer. I had to move back to Ohio for my job, and I miss the Windy City so much already!

Not very closely, I'm not much of a lyrics guy. It seemed the same canned cliches I'd expect. Are the lyircs posted anywhere to read? I can't listen to them at work.
