we've all heard the one released earlier during the Lost Dogs time. from what I've heard doesn't sound like it's a new vocal track... if that's the case whats the big deal with this "new release thing" on the radio??

Well it's a marketing thing in one aspect and the opportunity allows pearl jam to have a new song (even though it's an old outake) on the radio airwaves in another aspect.

I would guess it is the older mix- remixed/mastered. They did several vocal takes as the versions from the demos/rare-unrealeased CD leak sounded differen than the rough mixes tape version.

the LD version was an atrocity- but would have been awesome had we not heard the "real" version way before it. The vocal add such an awesome dimension.

I hope the radios play the fuck out of it so the newbies can hear the aura in Ed and the group that has long since gone away. Ed just sounds different, younger, more energetic, more frantic.

these actual sound like the original demo version of the song, where he says 'sister' at times and not 'brother'

Eddie did NOT re-record the vocal.
Brendon O'Brien has just mixed the ORIGINAL vocal track using modern equipment; which might be what you are hearing.

Why in the hell would Eddie bother to come in and re-record his vocals to this song 20 years after the fact?
That doesn't make the slightest bit of sense....considering he's out writing NEW SONGS for a NEW ALBUM

For exactly the same reason he had Mike butcher the song and turn it into an instrumental for LD. Apparently Ed HATES (or at the very least is extremely embarrassed by) the lyrics to this song.

maybe he just hates his voice from back then, cause he re-recorded vocals on a number of tracks for lost dogs.

What???? No!!! They even talked about about this on WMMY-Philly. They are the origional vocals. The song was only remixed, not rerecorded.

could it possibly be another take from those sessions? it's not unusual at all to keep several takes when recording. just a thought...

well, i'm about 90% sure that it is re-recorded. for one, it sounds nothing like ed did back then. second, it sounds completely like Ed sounds now. all of the bellowing baritone parts are gone, which was the trademark of the early ed voice.

They most definitely aren't the original vocals from Rough Mixes or the Rarities leak. If that's Ed circa 1991, then they've used a very early take. But the way he completely butchers the lyrics reminds me of Alone from LD more than anything else.

What about the high pitched sqeels that ed would throw in. There are a couple in there that sond kind of high for the current ed. Can even hit those notes now?
  • Pearl Jam released a bunch of different takes of Brother to radio stations. Some stations got new vocals, some got original, some got alternate takes, and some got the instrumental. They're trying to fuck with us because we obviously have nothing better to do than analyze what era Ed's vocals are from.

I don't know how anyone can listen to this and think that this is a re-recorded track.

I find it very doubtful that Eddie would re record his vocals.

As if he even gives a shit about this song.

Why on earth would he take a break from recording a NEW ALBUM so that he can come in the and fuck around with some outake from 20 years ago?

Not only would this be totally LAME, but completly out of character.

This is definately an early take of "Brother" re-mixed by Brendon O'Brien using modern 2009 technology.

It's 1991 Eddie. with a brand new coat of paint....
