this Brother song...

VINNY GOOMBA wrote:This is definitely an old recording, using an alternate vocal tracking remixed and facelifted. It is definitely young, angry Ed, which is night and day from how we know the current Eddie Vedder. I am partial to the demo version of brother with different lyrics, a different arrangement-- especially in the breakdown. The demo version of the breakdown in the song is 10x better. The words are great in that version, as is when he actually sings them. I was always partial to the outro of the demo version of this song too, "Go home, turn on the fuckin tv..." it sums the song up nicely. This new version is a bit polished for my liking, but it's good. It's just not as good as the version I'm used to.
After another listen, I'm thinking it might just be a re-record of his voice. Eddie trying to sound like 91 Eddie.
Old version still kicks its ass.0 -
Another voice, another opinion..
Just listened to it on myspace. Most definitely an early Vedder vocal. I think he did redo some stuff on Lost Dogs (Alone for example) but not in this case.
Thought it sounded great...I think prefer the older breakdown with Mike's weeping guitar, but all in all great job.
Never really heard live Dave A before, but from the sounds of SOLAT he sounds more "Rock" than Matt Cameron possibly bordering on Metal. Its certainly energetic, but I'm not sure he's got the feel of Cameron.
We'll see.0 -
Has it been decided if the vox were redone? I can see how people think he redone it, but I just think, as others have said, the newer equipment and techniques making his voice a bit newish.0

God, the new brother sucks compared to the ten demos/anything inbetween.
Either im not listening properly but i swear i don't hear the really nice "the birds dont even whisper".
Just feel the new version doesn't have the grovey, pacey kinda style. Also odd saying sister a lot in a song thats called brother, just so used to hearing brother!0 -
the more i listen to this new version, the more i am convinced that either parts of or the whole vocal track was re-recorded during Lost Dogs....it just sounds more and more like muffled ed from riot act......0

I really miss the "birds don't even whisper." The whole breakdown in the new version of the song is crap compared to the old one.
I like the, "Ohhhh little sister, you and me can rise above"
I've always interpreted the song to be about "Big Brother," with the ending "I'm gonna go home, turn on that fuckin TV, watch a night of news, drink a beer, like I could change the world, yeah right-- fuck it." fit perfect. Guess it isn't all that great for radio!0 -

I've always thought it was a "gay" song. "In the closet, my pleasures, 'cause my big brother won't let me be...."
Not, the most subtle lyric in the world, there.Rock me Jesus, roll me Lord...

I just heard this version on the radio (never thought I'd hear Brother on the radio...but anyways) and while I like Brother, and it was cool to hear it, this version kinda sucks.
The demos, and even the instrumental version are better IMO.
Oh, and no. That's not Ed's current voice. It's just heavily remastered from way back when.0 -
I am just amazed by how many club members believe that this is a current Ed on vocals. No big deal...but I would bet any amount of money that this is just a "polished" old vocal track.
Ed can't sound like "old" Ed anymore...nor would he even try IMO. I Just think it's so very obvious that his vocals are from 1991. Maybe my ear is above average when it comes to these things. BTW...I do have a great ear....or so i've been told."Had my eyes peeled both wide open, and I got a glimpse...of my innocense, got back my inner sence, baby got it...still got it"0 -
Agreed, sounds like old Ed to me. I wouldn't have minded if they rerecorded this or other old songs, as I think the band can play as good as ever, and I like Ed's current voice.
Has the band ever confirmed if they rerecorded songs for Lost Dogs?0 -
Some people are gonna be embarrassed when the truth comes out, some people on both sides of the fence seem pretty definite..... :shock:http://www.wishlistfoundation.org

I'm pretty sure that Alone is argument #1 for the fact that they DID rerecord some stuff for LD. First, I absolutely don't buy the whole "it's an earlier take" argument. The music is IDENTICAL to what's on not only the Rough Mixes bootleg, but also on the Rarities Unreleased Cuts promo disc. However, the vocals and lyrics are completely fucked. Now, from the First Week Rehearsals demo, we know that the lyrics to Alone were fully formed by the time they went in to record the 10 sessions. So there shouldn't have been any reason for a later recorded version to sound that bad. The only thing I can come up with is that, for whatever reason, Ed decided to re-record vocals for some songs. And in the process managed to completely butcher the lyrics. Ed did it to Alone, and he's done it to Brother as well.Rock me Jesus, roll me Lord...

no, that wasn't the whole story, it was long b/c roche is the ultimate pj fan and he was talking to the audience (which could consist of listeners who may not own Ten) about how he's been playing it every hour to get their reaction. He was surprised at the listeners' reactions....how much they liked it. He was undecided at first and wanted everyone else's opinion. Then, he was excited as he described the parts he liked the best. I can't remember it all, but it sure made my boring long, drive home from work better. I have to make sure I describe what he said accurately b/c he used to read the old board and sometimes posted. (roche, if you are reading this, I'm sorry if I didn't get it right, but I know how much you love the band.)
If only more dj's could be like roche.
dc101's website has many scantily clad women and it makes me sad. Because of their thong pics, etc. I can't play it online at work.9/98, 9/00 - DC, 4/03 - Pitt., 7/03 - Bristow, 10/04 - Reading, 10/05 - Philly, 5/06 - DC, 6/06 - Pitt., 6/08 - Va Beach, 6/08 - DC, 5/10 - Bristow, 10/13 B'more
