According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Flyers are looking to sign free agent veteran defenceman Brian Leetch.

The Flyers are without Mike Rathje for an indefinite period due to a herniated disk, and would like Leetch to solidify their power play.

"Brian has not made any decisions about the season so far," Leetch's agent Jay Grossman told the Inquirer. "We've been contacted by a number of teams about playing this season. There are a number of things Brian has to sort through. He's made no decision in his personal situation."

Currently, the Flyers have Joni Pitkanen quarterbacking the power play with some help from newcomer Nolan Baumgartner and second-year NHLer Freddy Meyer, neither of whom boasts power play credentials to match Leetch, an 18-year NHL veteran who has scored 1028 points in 1205 career games with the Rangers, Maple Leafs and Bruins.

Leetch, 38, had 32 points, and a minus-10 rating, in 61 games with Boston last season.

Citing two league sources, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Monday that the Flyers are interested in free-agent veteran Brian Leetch.

Oct 9 - After watching the Oilers sign Joffrey Lupul, Ales Hemsky and Ethan Moreau to extensions, Steve Staios is hoping for the same.
According to local reports out of Edmonton, the veteran winger is hoping that the Oilers and his agent, Pat Morris, will be able to reach a new deal by mid-week. If not, the talks might be tabled until after the 2006-07 season (the same as Ryan Smyth).

"I'd prefer that if anything is going to get done it gets done quickly," Staios told local reporters Sunday. "It's something I'd rather not think about. Once you get into the season and into the day-to-day routine, you want to think about playing and winning. That's all you really want to think about."

According to a report from the Philadelphia Daily News, the Flyers might consider turning to the league and asking to get Rathje declared physically unable to play. It would clear his $3.5 million salary and enable Philly to deal for another defenseman.

Earlier this month, the league approved Devils GM Lou Lamoriello's same request for Alexander Mogilny, a move than enabled New Jersey to sign Brian Gionta, Paul Martin and others.

There was some buzz over the past few weeks that the Flyers were looking for another goaltender since Antero Niittymaki's hip problems surfaced.

One of the reported candidates: Ilya Bryzgalov.

But, over the weekend, Ducks GM Brian Burke denied that he and Flyers GM Bob Clarke were talking trade.

"Not true," Burke was quoted as saying in the Philadelphia Inquirer. "I've talked to Bob Clarke last week, but it had nothing to do with either of us trying to trade players."

According to local reports out of New York, the defenseman, who was acquired at last season's trade deadline from the Anaheim Ducks, is close to being cleared nearly four months after a second reconstructive surgery on his left knee.

But reports said the Rangers haven't decided whether to play, trade or send down the defenseman.

Ozolinsh has had a tumultuous offseason. He was arrested for driving while intoxicated after participating in the league's voluntary substance abuse program earlier in the season.

Oct 5 - The Predators now appear ready to start contract talks with Kimmo Timonen.
Shortly after naming Timonen team captain, the Predators want to open up talks with the defenseman that would prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Nashville GM David Poile told local reporters that the team plans to open talks next week.

"We held off on the negotiations on purpose while the captaincy was being decided, because we didn't want to confuse any of the issues," Poile was quoted as saying in The Tennessean.
