speaking as a biased Yankee fan here, but I think it was a mistake for the Red Sox to bring back both Schilling and Wakefield. Not that either will all of a sudden become terrible, but neither was that great this year. These deals seem more like lifetime achievement awards than good deals for 2008.0

Well, they both helped to win 2 World Series Championships and that is reason enough to bring them back especially under incentive laden contracts in Schilling's case.

yeah, I understand that. Especially considering the pitching market is incredibly thin. I just think it's always better to let a guy go a year early than to keep him a year too long.0

this comes from a fan of the team that paid roger clemens a prorated $28mil deal.
carl pavano for $11mil or curt schilling for a base salary of $8mil (that can be bumped up to $14mil)?
igawa for $4mil or wakefield for $4mil?
i'll take the sox signing above average #3 and #4 pitchers for a combined $12mil in base salary.0 -

Considering Wakefield can eat innings and tied a career high for wins with 17 and Schilling's era in his 13 starts after coming off the dl including the post season was 3.25, I don't see how it's a bad move.
You get to bring the kids along next year and have the Vets carry the team while the kids get mentored by Schilling and Wakefield who have seen it all.
I'm actually really happy with this move. Plus now you have insurance in case injuries strike. You have 7 starters on the roster counting Beckett, Dice K, Bucholz and Tavarez. Now we have insurance in case the injury bug creeps up and won't have to do what the Yankees did and start Pavano on Opening Day or go through rookie after rookie to hold down the fort.
I'd rather have more pitching than less. And basically by reupping Wakefield and Schilling the Red Sox kept the same team in tact and cut 12-13 million in salary with Gagne and Clement's contract expiring.- Busted down the pretext

We are returning at least 7 of eight positional starters and all of the pitchers are coming back with Buccholz possibly coming up. Most likely Lowell is returning too, that puts us at the entire starting team of the defending World Series Champions who dominated in the playoffs, it doesn't get much better of a plan than that. We let Gagne walk which was the second best plan he could have made.
I am not worried at all.I was taught a month ago to bide my time and take it slow, but then I learned just yesterday to rush and never waste a day. Now I'm convinced the whole day long that all I've learned is always wrong. Things are true that I forget, but no one taught that to me yet0 -
I agree, but we need another bat to go along with Manny and Ortiz. If Drew warms up it could be a different story.
I am not so much worried about the team, more that there is no ready replacement for Lowell9/7/98, 8/3/00, 9/4/00, 4/15/03, 7/1/03, 9/28/04, 9/29/04, 5/24/06, 5/25/06, 6/17/08, 6/22/08, 6/28/08, 6/30/08, 5/17/10, 10/15/13, 10/16/13.0 -
looks like lowell and the sox have agreed on a 3 year/$37.5mil deal.0

Lowell stays
Email|Link By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff November 19, 07 01:05 PM
Free-agent third baseman Mike Lowell has agreed in principle to the framework of a three-year deal to return to the Red Sox, major league baseball sources close to the negotiations have confirmed.
Lowell, 33, tested the free-agent waters, and may have received at least one four-year offer from another undisclosed team, but in the end the Sox third baseman elected to stay where he was most comfortable. Sources indicate that the three year deal is worth in the $36-$38 million range.
The Red Sox had placed a deadline of today for Lowell to make up his mind. If Lowell had passed on the Sox offer, which remained pretty close to the original offer they made the World Series MVP, they were ready to begin implmenting their Plan B.
The Sox have now re-signed both of their major free-agents - Curt Schilling, who agreed to a one-year deal for $8 million and $5 million in incentives. The Sox could now entertain a deal for outfielder Coco Crisp sometimes between now and the winter meetings in December.I was taught a month ago to bide my time and take it slow, but then I learned just yesterday to rush and never waste a day. Really excited about lowell coming back. Need to go and make sure the Yanks dont get a stud pitcher and finish the pen. Then it's a 2008 with as much promise as you could hope for.9/7/98, 8/3/00, 9/4/00, 4/15/03, 7/1/03, 9/28/04, 9/29/04, 5/24/06, 5/25/06, 6/17/08, 6/22/08, 6/28/08, 6/30/08, 5/17/10, 10/15/13, 10/16/13.0
