Now when we get out of Iraq we can keep the military industrial complex going by pointing at Russia and starting a new cold war.

Perfect, let's just hope it stays cold, eh?

I'm certainly not an expert on this part of the world, but form what I've seen, the Russians are kind of justified here. South Ossetia shares a pretty common heritage with the Russian people. The South Ossetians want to claim independence and actually wanted to be part of the Russian Federation. The Russians already had peacekeepers on the ground because the are has been prone to violence. Georgia tried to forcibly keep the Ossetians from claiming independence. The Russians then offered "fast-track" citizenship to S Ossetians that wanted it, both as a reason to be there and as an expression of their interest in being in the Federation.

In this situation the Russians are actually on the side of of "self-determination", although that probably isn't THEIR motivation. This is what the majority of South Ossetians seem to want.

The US will stay out of this one. We'll argue the Russians suck for doing this to detract from the shitty thyings we are doing. The reality is that we don't care. Now, Georgia on the other hand.......there's a million barrels of oil a day pumped through Georgia, so we'll HAVE to defend the "democratic" Georgians if it escalates, but it shouldn't.

"For past seven years, Israeli companies have been helping Gerogian army to preparer for war against Russia through arms deals, training of infantry units and security advice."

    http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3580136,00.html

"Jewish Georgian Minister Temur Yakobshvili on Sunday praised the Israel Defense Forces for its role in training Georgian troops and said Israel should be proud of its military might, in an interview with Army Radio. "Israel should be proud of its military which trained Georgian soldiers," Yakobashvili told Army Radio in Hebrew, referring to a private Israeli group Georgia had hired."

uhhhh... the Israelis sold arms to their allies?!? THOSE SONS OF BITCHES!

i like how in the header of that first article (ignoring the typo. wow. professional) it says that the Israelis sold Georgians weapons with the express purpose of war with Russia apparently, then says nothing to back up this claim in the rest of the article, and actually stated that some Israelis were worried it might piss off Russia.

All and all a completely irrellevent post. why is this vital information to you? most of the west suppports the small, former soviet bloc countries, and considering Russia's past aggression and its deteriorating democracy (if it can even be called that anymore), it seems perfectly reasonable (as a general rule. not neccesarily in this event). Fair and balanced, i tells ya!

If this conflict continues to get out of hand then guess what.... Obama's chances of becoming President get reduced DRASTICALLY!! In the event of a full out war between Russia and Georgia (who we'll back)... who is the public going to vote for? A peaceful democrat, or a military experienced republican?

I'm not choosing sides between the candidates... just making an observation.

Well, going to war with Russia means we all die, so what difference would it really make who gets elected.

so basically this is the late 70's early 80's cold (hot) war revisitied.

It's ultimately a pissing contest unfortunately innocent people will be caught in the middle and killed over it.

Without even dealing with the opinions of the variety of parties, it seems like this is about control and influence in the region when you wade through the political bullshit.
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.

Are you saying that McCain was a lower ranked officer than Obama.. because I'm pretty confident Obama did not fight in Vietnam.

As you said, those same people that voted in Bush for a second term will get worried about another Cold War and will want to play it safe with another Republican.

Personally, I think both candidates suck. The whole Republican/ Democrat system is a bunch of horseshit. I think we should have our government run more like a big company, with a CEO that has no ties to the party system and can be fired if he is not directing the country in the right direction. Of course that will never happen because we're too far entrenched in the current system.

    Probably... haha

It would never work unless we had some people like our founding fathers set it up. Give some power to the have nots and so on...
I just watched that John Adams series on HBO, those guys were fucking amazing! The show was pretty good too:D

are you one of those people who thinks our founding fathers were saints?

Cause I'm sure while Thomas Jefferson was writing "...all men, created equal..." he was also yelling out "GO GET ME A SANDWICH NIGGER OR I'LL KILL YOU."

wait a minute, what does this have to do with russia and georgia again?

Not much, but then again you found a way to bring Israel into it.

how is it irrelevant? it is clearly related to the topic.

Most of the West also supports Israel, many countries supported war on Iraq, Afghanistan and the occupation, sanctions/possible military usage on Iran... what's the point here?

In reality, Israel brought itself into it.

whats the point of mentioning Israel's arms sales here? They are pretty insignificant compared with most of Georgia's dealings with the rest of the west, or at least of no special interest to anyone not obsessed with hating on Israel. its almost completely off topic, just admit it.

and if Israel's intent was to arm Georgians to launch a war with Russia (again, no proof in the article), it was pretty poor planning on their part. unless the purpose was to turn Georgia into a Russian satellite again.

Isn't Russia just practicing 'Peace Keeping' due to Georgia's military move into South Ossetia?
