I wasn't referring to Harlem specifically ... My statement was intended to be more general. I am willing to believe you when you say that Harlem is relatively safe.
    So take a freaking pill.

amen. it was an example, maybe a poor one. but not everyone in the world knows every detail about nyc and its demographics. i loathe new yorkers who seem shocked that not everyone knows the ins and outs of every burrough.

and that is my point. noticing or being aware of differences does not if the guys in the audience had been white fratboys at duke and richards had gone on a rant about pampered rich date rapists, people woulda shrugged it off and said the boys got what they deserved for being obnoxious at a comedy show.

Indeed ... And that's kind of the point I was trying to make in this thread. In the U.S., you can actually get away with saying quite a few bigoted things. Just don't target black folks.

And Harlem DOES have a reputation for violence, and sorry, its not just because of black residents. Historically, crime was actually really bad there. If that's no longer the case, cool.

well i assumed you were referring to harlem specifically when your response quoted the specific mention of harlem.

i don't need a freaking pill, but thanks.

i can't speak for all new yorkers, but i know with me i'm not shocked when everyone isn't aware of every nyc detail. i'm more irritated when people make uninformed and incorrect claims, especially about a place they've never been.

Michael Richards called me today to apologize. I accepted his apology and moved on...just like those punk-assed hecklers should.

Didn't those hecklers make some extreme racial remarks to Richards too? How come they're getting a free ride in all of this, and not getting any bashing for their remarks?

i'm surprised that not much has been made about michaels' comment "50 years ago we would have hung you upside down with a fork up your ass". so far it's just been his use of the n-word. i thought his "hanging" comment was just as bad, or worse. what, just because he got heckled, he had to point out the fact that not long ago black people were being hanged?? what a racist dick. to me, that comment is the equivalent of saying to a jewish person "50 years ago we would have stuck you in an oven with a fork up your ass". i can't believe no one is talking about that as much as his use of the n-word.

  • The real problem is that too many people - including all the so-called activists that have gotten involved - are focusing on the word "n*igger," and that is NOT the main issue.

    1. Michael Richards has no business using the word n*igger - TRUE

    2. In the context of the situation, the word was used in a hateful and malicious manner - TRUE

    3. In the heat of the moment, people can blurt out widely used hurtful words and stereotypes - TRUE

    # 3 is why screaming the word n*gger, while very wrong, doesn't necessarily in and of itself make the man a racist.

    HOWEVER...

"50 years ago we'd have you upside down with a fuckin' fork in your ass...that's what happens when you interrupt the white man, don't you know?"

This train of thought goes well beyond your average attack in the heat of the moment. Neither a desriptive accounting of a lynched man, nor this aura of white supremacy are in the everyday lexicon of American stereotypes about black people - or any other group for that matter.

He had this in him...it may have been buried so deeply that his only racist actions were subtle and he may not have even been very aware of it, but what he expressed here goes way beyond a little bit of bias coming out in a rant.
