But with the continuing escalated prices of Manhattan real estate, rich white people finally figured out if you just go up a few blocks and start buying brownstones and townhouses you can force the low-middle income folks out (gentrification anyone?) and up. Then you have these young first time homebuyers attempting to draw attention to themselves by constantly talking about how they "live in Harlem". Harlem may be "safer" now because the low income residents have been forced up and out. For increased crime you need to look no further than the Bronx and certain parts of Brooklyn and Queens where people who are forever down on their luck (minorities/immigrants) try to live the only way they know how. (Sorry, I couldn't refrain from using a line from the Dukes of Hazzard theme song, after all what would a discussion about race be without an orange car with a confederate flag on top?)

Anyway, the person who first used Harlem as an example where white people might be afraid to walk around at night already said he didn't know much about the current situation there... so it's not really important.
Also two other points: First, Someone posed the question "what if Richards had made these remarks about Jews, would Seinfeld be so forgiving?" Isn't Richards Jewish?
And second, although what Richards did was insensitive and uncalled for, what I have not seen anyone mention (not just on here but on any broadcast) is what the hecklers said right after the incident. I read an interview where one of the hecklers said that they went to the club to "playfully heckle" Richards. So they were going to the club only to heckle Richards. Pre-meditated heckling is fucked up especially now that he is seeking monetary damages! To a comedian there is no such thing as a "playful heckler". If someone tried to playfully heckle me I would have to playfully kick their ass. Also what someone said earlier about the hecklers responding with "cracker" is fucked up as well and is ignored in the hecklers quest for media coverage and, SHOCK, a fat pay-out.

I'm saying that per capita, Harlem is not necessarily dangerous, anymore. However, there are still pockets of Harlem that are very dangerous. These areas, I would venture to guess, are not those that VictoryGins friends live in, nor would they venture into in the wee hours of the night. I could be wrong, as I don't know Victory, but am probably not. They are also the areas that have yet to be "taken over". It will happen, just hasn't yet. That is all.

That's quite a nice area! I have a friend who owns a Brownstone on Saint Nicholas Ave. It is an incredibly lively area and you would have no reason to feel unsafe like most of NYC seeing how it is the safest large city in the nation. I agree that it is less scary than most people make it out to be. Those people have never stepped foot north of Central Park.
