So I know there's other notable singers from the 90s, but I'm just talking about the "Big Four" of grunge here. Based on songwriting, vocals, technical ability or whatever, who do you think is the best frontman?

Vedder/Staley, Cornell, Cobain
In that order...Is it so wrong to think that love can keep us safe?0 -

Of course debatable, but I think you may have it right there!I love to turn you on0 -

in 1992:
1.Cornell
2.Vedder
3.Cobain
4.Staley
today:
1.Vedder
2.Cornell
just personal opinion, all 4 of them are great“Life is life everywhere. Life is in ourselves and not outside us. There will be men beside me, and the important thing is to be a man among men and to remain a man always, whatever the misfortunes, not to despair and not to fall - that is the aim of life, that is its purpose.”

To me, definitely:
Cornell
Vedder
Cobain
StaleyHow dark a woe! yet how sublime a hope!
How silently serene a sea of pride!
How daring an ambition! yet how deep--
How fathomless a capacity for love!0 -
yikes that's tough.
gotta go with vedder over cobain. he stuck around.
the other 2 are a far far distant 3rd and 4th.those undecided, needn't have faith to be free0 -
well i have to go with cobain, vedder, layne, and then cornell. Sure vedder is the better writer and and layne and cornell are better singers.
cobain is the only one of the 4 that any of us would have heard of if it wasnt for the bands. vedder wrote the music for how many songs on ten? layne didnt even start writing lyrics till dirt and that was like what 1 song. and cornell well he has more then his share of off moments live.0 -

In terms of all round ability I agree. Whilst Cornell was technically a better singer than Vedder, I think Vedder writes better lyrics, and had been more consistent.0 -

Vedder won out b/c of consitency. I've seen cornell w/ SG, solo, and AS...he was great solo and good with AS/SG and Vedder has always been good and captivating. I'd much rather see Cornell solo than vedder though.make sure the fortune that you seek...is the fortune that you need0 -
1. vedder (time has proven this, although in my opinion he has always been the best)
2. cobain
3 and 4 staley and cornell (don't like either of them, don't like soundgarden or alice and chains......and i hate audioslave)...............so maybe i'm making a biased argument. i will also say that i appreciate nirvana and i think they were a good band but i'm not that big of a fan of theirs either. i think they are one of the most overrated bands of all time.0 -

I'll go with that one.0 -
i love them all...it is obvoious that based on technical ability Chris is the best and Kurt the "worst" but i think you can't compare them that way...so I'd say:
1. Eddie/Chris
3. Layne
4. Kurt"now i've got room to spread my wings and my messages of love...yeah love was my drug but that's not what i died of"

Didn't Jerry write most of AiC's songs?I share a cigarette with negativity.0

my god
this thread is silly we all know its
BEST = Vedder,Cornell Staley - no order
Worst - Cobain0 -
Cobain
Ed
Cornel
Layne
based mostly on the fact that Kurt was a way bigger figure in his band than the others were in thiers, I don't know how much SG was Chris but I would assume that the other guys had a say, and yeah Layne was the singer in Jerry Cantrells band. Also In Utero is the best album any of them were on,."I'm not suicidal, except when I drink. That's why we don't all drink at the same time, there'd be no-one alive to drive home..."
