no one fucking writes about anything anymore in music... nobody wants to fucking decrease their market share... its like this last election. gillard and abbott just not saying anything, just so they dont scare anyone off
- garth liddiard. the drones.
i can only slightly agree with this... but bands like
Fleet Foxes
Grizzly Bear
My Morning Jacket
The National
Arcade Fire
Bon Iver
are definitely my favorite scene of music since the 90's era rock!
MMJ isn't really in that scene. I'd put them somewhere close to jam band territory, that and they actually play decent music.
Cornell is/was the best technically and it's prolly not really close
Staley and Cobain were kinda bad in a way and got by on the emotion
Vedder is just really good all around.
As far as vocal talent goes this is not close. Chris Cornell could do things that no one else could do. Listen to Slaves and Bulldozers and Jesus Christ Pose. The first time I hard these back to back I was literally speechless. Best 10 minutes of vocals in the history of music. He hits notes that I didn't even think could be hit.
I agree that Cornell can absolutely hit notes that nobody else can, but I don't know if I would crown him the king of vocals. IMO Vedder has always been a better live singer.....and I think he also showcases his voice in several different singing styles, where Cornell seems more limited delivery wise. I agree with everyting else you wrote though.

For me its: Vedder<
Cornell<--Staley<
Cobain
I can't say I would agree with Cornell's delivery being limited, in fact I would say he's far more versatile then any of the other singers. That juxtaposition is no more evident than on the Singles OST where he goes from metal screaming with Soundgarden on Birth Ritual, to a much more bluesy voice on Seasons, where you really get to hear the depth of his lower register. Then you have stuff like Temple Of The Dog and Euphoria Morning where he goes for a much more soulful sound.
I would agree that Vedder is more consistent live, but then he didn't set himself the stunningly high standards that Cornell did in the studio.
vocally, i think Cornell is the best. just listen to four walled world.
as far as who is the best frontman, i'd say Vedder.
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
Butthead: Huh huh.
Vedder
Cornell (earlier in his career, Badmotorfinger I think has been his greatest recorded work.)
Staley
Cobain

If I actually have to sing along, then this is easy.
Cobain (just play and sing off-key)
Vedder (he avoids the high parts which helps me)
Cornell (The Day I Tried to Live is a perfect example of his range and I can't get near the 2nd verse)
Staley (that's unpossible)

You find it easier to sing Cornell than Staley? Not for me. Staley, Vedder, and Cobain are all in my comfortable range.

For Staley, I guess it depend on if is early or late stuff. He seems to be in a drug induced stupor for much of the tripod album and it is pretty easy to match. I guess Cornell is harder to match now that I think about it.
I think this discussion, or what I read of it, is pretty interesting...mostly because these categories are all different, in terms of what makes a great frontman, singer, songwriter, etc.
In any event, my pick, on the pearl jam website, is unsurprisingly Eddie Vedder. This mostly goes to his strength as a frontman. He's really grown into that role over the years, and has mastered it in a manner I haven't seen with any other band. He does a great bulk of carrying the show in concert, and though everyone is amazing, Vedder does a great job of keeping the crowd in the palm of their hands, and making each concertgoer feel like they are having a unique experience special to them and their show. Not sure who else, as a frontman, can make that claim so comfortably.
Staley and Vedder are awful close for me though, it's practically a tie. Cobain is a distant 4th, I like Nirvana but they're not in the league of those 3 others.
Why bother? They were (are) all great in their own right.
I will say the vocal quality in this group is incredible. You would be hard-pressed to put four other iconic rock frontmen together and find this level of vocal ability and depth.
Cornell is still an incredible singer (he's improved drastically since disbanding Audioslave). Much of my decision is based on song-writing as well, and today, Vedder has Cornell easily destroyed in that department. Only my opinion though.
Cornell circa 89-94 may well have had the greatest 'rock' voice ever, but I can only listen to his wailing in small doses! Cobain - best screamer, hands down. Eddie - most pleasing on the ear and best all round.

Oh and anyone who doesn't rate Cobain as a singer REALLY needs to go back and listen to 'Unplugged In New York' again. It's not all about technique or being able to hold notes etc - the guy's voice was positively dripping with soul.

i think chris cornell's vocals on euphoria morning, his first incredible solo album, might be the greatest vocals i've ever heard recorded. however, my favorite voice of all time is easily eddie. pj is my favorite band and there is no way i can rank anything related to them under anyone else, as ridiculous as that sounds. i also LOVE layne's voice and kurt's is good too. i'm waaaay more into aic/mad season and chris cornells different projects then nirvana though.
1.) Ed
2.) Chris
3.) Layne
4.) Kurt
this list is useless though. they're all amazing in their own rights. ESPECIALLY the first 3. their music has effected me on an enormous level for years.

I personal hate Nirvana and Cobain so that´s why he is last. IMO I think Vedder writes better songs and has a better voice than Cornell. But I still like Cornell, I don´t really care for Stanley though.

That said, I think Cornell is probably more musical ability.
I'd go...
