sorry righteousbabe, but i've seen cordelia twice...and it was awesome! it's SO heavy live...

I've also seen them play it twice, once way back in '92 in Calgary, and again in '99 in Spokane, WA. And yes, it's magnificent live. Wish they'd play it more often.

They've been touring the shit out of the States for years (since 1989), so it doesn't surprise me at all that they can sell out most clubs and theatres down there. Not bad for a band that gets absolutely zero radio play in the U.S. When you tour a country that much though, you're bound to make a few fans along the way. I've noticed they're much more well known in the border States like New York, Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota, Washington, etc... It seems the further south they go, the smaller the venue they play. Although I hear they have quite the following in Texas. Go figure.

from the first listen of IBE, "gus" was my favourite track...others have grown on me now, but "gus" still stands out, in my opinion.

In Violet Light is very underrated. Some Hip fans weren't too keen on it when it was released, and I know it didn't sell very well, but I think it's a very solid record. Leave is one of the most incredible songs they've ever written in my opinion, and how can you not love Good Life, The Darkest One, Throwing Off Glass, A Beautiful Thing, Silver Jet, The Dark Canuck, and of course, the absolutely brilliant Dire Wolf, which is obviously one of my all time favorite Hip songs (hence my username.)

Song of the day over at thehip.com:

"Gus: The Polar Bear from Central Park" live from St. John, N.B., featuring some absolutely smokin' guitar work from Mr. Baker.

Seven Days only played once! I'm glad to have heard it then! :D

I would've thought...38 Years Old would've been played more than 20. It's one of the best Up To Here songs!

38 Years Old was one of the first Hip songs I heard. And for years being so young and naive back then...the only lines I could remember from it were "He's 38 year's old, never kissed a girl". All I could remember was giggling and all I kept thinking was "Oh that poor poor man".

Anyway it's not until years later, that I really got into the band, and thankfully I looked up the whole lyrics (and the story behind it) for my sakes. Which made more sense, thank god.

I also thought it was actually about Gord's brother, like others have thought.

    http://www.hipmuseum.com/38.html

If you read that link...its also explains why they don't play it often.
"All the strength that you might think would disappear, resolving..."
  • thanks for that link mariposa! i really enjoy gaining some insight into the meanings behind the songs.

i was questioning the number of times they'd played it...thinking maybe there was an error...i know on hipbase there are some setlists missing from the archives...but this seems to explain a lot. thanks.
  • If you think some of the Hip's covers are great, which they are, check out some of Gord's solo covers. Maybe this has been metioned before but Gord covers Johnny, Neil, and Bob splendidly. "Barstool Blues", "When you Dance I can Really Love", and "Tonights the Night" are given the proper treatment as well as other greats like "Going Going Gone" and "I Wants to Be Loved" by Dylan as well as "When the Man Comes Around" by Mr. Cash. Actually, there is a great version done by the Hip of "Going Going Gone" at http://www.thehip.com right now.

You're welcome! :) It is a very informative website...I've been reading so much from there as of late. However, it's kinda too bad they stopped playing it though. It's such a good song...kinda along the lines of Wheat Kings for me.

Hmmm I really gotta check out the setlist there, do you know how far back does it go?
