thing is it doesn't necessarily sells them more tickets.. if you blow too much money on traveling far, you'll attend less shows than if you had aimed for the closer ones.

You might get folks to buy more tickets the first time you do it, but you run the risk of running them off if you continue to do it.

For example: Do you want to sell me one car for a quick buck or do you want to see me several cars over the course of my lifetime? It's all about the relationship between the buyer and the seller.

If the relationship isn't nurtured, that dedicated buyer may choose another seller.

    Hi Pissbottleman,

What would consider this relationship status now?.....

radiohead did their announcement last year listing the cities and countries with no dates about a week or two before the first round of tickets went on sale. i think u2 even listed all their stops without dates at first too. i'd love to see something like that done.

I don't want to speak on behalf of anyone other than myself, but I'm not traveling to multiple shows or waiting in anticipation of an announcement.

I disagreed with the '06 announcement and that soured me.

If they come close to me, I'll try for tickets to one show. If I get them, great. If not, life goes on.

    ...just makes sense doesnt it?

I understand how big the logistical nightmare must be to line up the right venues in a straight line...

I can imagine how many people have to have their ducks in a row...

I understand trying to complete a tour before other stated timelines...

We have lives too, and yeah, Pearl Jam happens to figure into it, maybe more than it should. Please, understand that we too have logistics to plan, to get our ducks in a row, and we also have future timelines.

I think PBM nailed it on the head too. Maybe we need to go car shopping once a year and buy the latest cheap ass ride that will get us by for a few months... NICKLEBACK anyone?

That, or get ahold of Dave Mathews Bands' tour manager. He seems to have his plans made often and early.

    sensible it IS!

would be AWESOME if they went back to this very logical system, announce the FULL TOUR ALL AT ONCE. or at the very least, one entire leg with information IF there will be additional legs, and what areas these legs will cover. VERY helpful! i believe? my first tour in 2003 this occurred. quite honestly, i've never really followed any band as closely as pearl jam, and certainly with the internet we can follow even MORE closely than ever before....but i don't recall any band giving out tour info piecemeal as pj does. just sayin'......;)
    Stay with me...

Announce one leg...drum up excitement, increase demand (because who knows if the band will be any closer than 6 hours away) and watch sales go up.

    Then, announce another leg.

    A great marketing plan.

Pure speculation on my part, but one with a fair amount of weight behind it.

Can't fault the business because they're trying to turn a profit.

I simply disagree from a consumer's point-of-view and now choose to spend my money differently.

This would be great, but they dont even have to go this far you know. They can simply say: ' hey, here are some dates in America in August. We are working on heading over to europe soon as well. Stay tuned'.

You know, simply share the plans.

so jeff said the band would be doing 09 dates in europe, the south and the west

if an official announcement comes for euro dates first and you blow all of your money going to a show in europe while you live in the south or west, you're kinda silly.

i like how pearl jam handles their announcements and their ticketing.

Yes, it's a logistical nightmare, especially if they're booking a very long tour. I understand it takes time to get it all pulled together....

BUT - This is an unusual year for our country and for many of us who have lived the good life for a long time-

There's a fucking depression going on. Sure, the media prefers "recession", but for some of us it's an outright depression. Anybody taken a look at the folks living in tent cities out in CA? Many of them are people just like you and me, not formerly homeless or welfare recipients. It's really nice to be excited about a new CD and tour, but don't forget that not every hardcore PJ fan is going to able to feel the love.

Many have nice jobs and expendable cash and don't really need to worry about the best use of money or credit. I was there once. But, some of us are struggling right now. I keep my membership up sure, I'm a hardcore fan sure, but this year is different from any other year I've ever known.

SO 10C - It would be SO HELPFUL to see all the US dates at once - even if tickets aren't being offered right away. Those of us with extremely limited funds could make the best economic decision in choosing venues and maybe see the band 2 or 3 times in our own region as opposed to paying air fares to fly across the country.

Your serious consideration of this fantastic idea would really be appreciated 10C!! :|

If Jeff's interview on that Missoula radio is to be believed, the band will be doing some dates in Europe this year.

Even if the exact dates/places are not set in stone, could 10c please, please, please confirm if they WILL indeed come to Europe when announcing the US dates? (assuming the US dates are first, might actually not be)... even if no exact countries are mentioned, just that there'll be some dates (if there are any planned of course).
That way, Europeans (and East coasters possibly) will be able to make an informed decision on whether/where to travel.

yes, I know, there'll be annoying people bugging you for exact dates/places if there's no details, but that'll be less than pissed off people because they've bought US tickets (that you won't allow to transfer) only to find out a months later they had a gig at home/nearby (not everyone reads the boards for rumours.. and anyway 2003 taught us not to rely on rumours for deciding where to go or not  ).

If nothing else, you can help the planet by avoiding people making unnecessary long haul flights

    Thanks

well, yes, ok, I'll be still doing some US dates to see my friends and celebrate my birthday, but I'm an hopeless case and not the norm

    Have the same problem.

    Live in Denmark.

Are planning a trip to New York in october, where it seems for sure that Pj, are not playing. I´m set to buy flight tickets, book hotel etc in the middle of may. If Pj announce European dates after i book the trip to New York i´m going to be wery sad. Just can´t afford both things.
    It would be a nightmare.

Please 10C give us just a little hint.

    Let´s keep this thread ALIVE!!!

And yes, very good point, you don't want all of us there every tour taking your 10 seats away-anyway, right?

I keep hearing from the local sources that there might be an Istanbul date this year. I would love to see my favorite band in my own country. But airfare for SFO-IST ain't cheap. Not to mention the time I have to take off from work. And really, I might as well see a few shows in Europe too while I am on that side of the pond. So, how about it? Kill some rumors or give us a hint maybe?

If 10C tells us, 10C tells everyone. The Band can't just say "hey lets tell the clubbers first, because then only the most dedicated fans will know". The reason why that logic doesn't work is because if they tell a mass of people, that mass of people will tell another mass of people, so on and so forth, and then the whole world knows. So the band has to be sure to release information at the right time for EVERYONE.

This might be a good idea, but it is NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN! I feel for folks trying to figure out their travel plans, but this is unrealistic. And sorry, but I gotta say, I miss the days when as a fan, all you did was wait until your favorite band came close to you, then you would get excited, buy your ticket and see your ONE show. The new trend of fans following a band for several shows or a whole tour, or travelling across the globe to see a band seems a bit over the top for me....the Dead fans did this too, and I didn't get it then either!
im with ya... maybe just cause im young and poor... dont think we would hear 90% of the complaining we get around here if people still had the mentality of early PJ fans... were all spoiled (myself included)

Well, I travelled back then to see them multiples times too (I saw most bands I liked multiple times)... if I'd had the money in '92, I'd have flown to the US, in a heartbeat, to go to Lolla... several times. I like the whole aspect of travelling, seeing somewhere new and seeing your favourite band at the same time is a fantastic bonus :)

I think all this is a great idea.

Oh yeah, give Australia some love... would be amazing if they toured there while I was home for a visit ;)

    I agree.

If they could go so far as to tell us which US states are being played, like all at one time, that would be helpful. I'm not going to buy tickets to a Cali show if they're playing in Colorado or Arizona. Or...gasp....New Mexico. (ha ha, good one)

I don't care they put it in a worldwide press release, as long as they give the info together and not in bits.
