1. Ten - the album that started it all
2. Vs. - track for track, their best, but didn't have the profound effect on me that Ten did
3. Yield - I remember when this came out, I was finally excited about them again
4. Backspacer - Really digging it. I like the compactness of the album. And I don't skip any tracks.
5. No Code - Hated it at first, love it now. Hence it being right in the middle.
6. Vitalogy - Great album, I just don't know why I don't seek it out more often.
7. Binaural - Some real gems on here, I like the darker sounding tracks (Sleight of Hand, NAIS, Of The Girl)
8. Riot Act - Underrated for sure. I did not like it at first, but there are some great songs on here
9. Avocado - Don't like the production and I skip a lot of tracks on this record. But I still like it.

this was easier than i thought it would be, but i could easily rearrange 3 through 6 in any order and be happy with my rankings, it's just a little too early for me to put backspacer ahead of vitalogy or yield.

The hard part of this is that I hardly listen to the albums anymore. It is all about the bootlegs and this list may look different if I was asked which album I would most want to hear live.
I feel the pits. I just spent 30 minutes typing an elogant response to this thread and the frickin' site asked me to re-sign in and I lost my shit. Perhaps it is a blessing.
Very succinctly now... I feel that too many people's rankings are whacked. In my previous post (that never made it to the 'big time')... I alluded to respect I needed to be pay to bands such as Led Zeppelin, the Stones, etc. when I was asked what my favourite bands of all time were- even though I don't listen to them anymore.
Relating this ideology to Pearl Jam... I feel Pearl Jam is the greatest band of all time (perfect timing between me and their explosion onto the scene... university years!).
They are not flawless- they have their 'Presence' like Led Zeppelin did (Binaural)... As well as their 'Coda' (Riot Act). 'Riot Act' slightly better than 'Binaural'... but both shuffled to the back of the pile pretty quickly.
BUT... these albums can be truly debated: they've got their II, III, and IV (10, Vs, Vitalogy)... and their 'Houses of the Holy' and 'Physical Graffitti' (Yield and No Code). Which is the best? Preferences here. '10' for me. Then 'Vs'.
They've gone beyond that and done what U2 and many other 'aging' bands have been unable to do... record albums in recent years that you truly want to put on (not just because you are trying desperately to make it sound good to yourself!). 'Backspacer'... I applaud... fabulous boys... just fabulous. 'Avocado' works for me.
Man, I knew I was in the minority in my belief that Yield is their weakest work but I did not appreciate how many people would ranked it above Ten/Vs/No Code (the 3 best IMO). Of course it doesn't matter Yield seems to have spoken to many people, I just didn't feel it.
Mike McCready makes the energizer bunny look tired.
I quite often don't get the "hate" (not that it's actual hate) of "Ten" among pearl jam fanatics. I don't think I could be able to find 7 albums I like better than Ten from ANY artist, let alone find pearl jam albums better than ten.
Then again, at this point I don't think I can talk about Ten without bias. Ten was basically the album that pulled me into the world of music and got me hooked. It was at that point that I heard it and said "this is what music's all about". I have a heard time separating its technical merits with its place in my youth.
1) Ten
2) Vs
3) Yield
4) Vitalogy
5) Backspacer
6) No Code
7) Riot Act
8) Binaural
9) Avocado
Ten: I could listen to any track, at any time, with any mood I'm in. I honestly don't have a bad thing to say about the album. Great hard rock, great emotion, great ballads. It had everything. Black is my current favorite, although that changes at times.
Vs: Best follow-up you can have. Again, not a track on there I can complain about. Dissident, Glorified g, rearviewmirror, daughter, indifference, elderly. just pure classics.
Yield: Unlike Ten and Vs, this one didn't hit me right away. But after time, it's grown on my considerably.
Vitalogy: has some of my absolute favorite tracks (STBC, Last Exit, Not for you, nothing man, corduroy, Betterman, Immortality. then some of the most befuddling tracks in PJ's catalog to me. Still, give me 7 classic songs and this album was great.
Backspacer: Not a really bad song on the list (although Johnny Guitar doesn't do much for me), and Just Breathe, Amongst the Waves and Unthought Known I absolutely love. The rest is good, but to me a bit forgettable.
No Code: At the time I was disappointed, now I think I'm crazy. Smile, Off he Goes, Habit, Red Mosquito, Lukin and Present Tense are a great series of songs.
Riot Act: I think this gets a bit of a bad rap. I love Thumbing my Way and I am Mine, and for that I don't think it's bad. I'm not too fond of the last 4 songs, but it is also longer than most PJ albums so I can forgive.
Binaural: The recording type didn't do a whole lot for me, and some of the songs I think suffered because of that. "Sad" is one of my favorite PJ songs of all time, and i'm not sure whether I should bump Binaural up because it was recorded then, or bump it down because they left it off.
Avocado: Just never got into this one that much. Not sure why. I haven't given it nearly as many listens as some of the others, and maybe that's why. Marker in the Sand's nice, but other than that I find this to be forgettable.

We're on the same wavelength in album appreciation
I think Ten was their greatest album, but i've listened to it so many times (as have we all!) and Vs i can still listen to without skipping a track, but not so with the masterpiece...

I'm aware that my list won't be unique, but this is just the way it is.
Looking at the years of release, personally I'm hoping the boys can continue on Backspacer and maybe even a new release can conquer a spot in my top three.
Of my list, both Binaural and Pearl Jam/Avocado don't pass the exam.
