5. What is the temple that the smoke monster protects? What is the smoke monster?
IMO, Smokey sounds like a roller coaster...like when the car is being pulled up the track...like that cranking sound. And, in S1 Rose said it reminded her of a sound she heard growing up...and I believe she said she's from Brooklyn. You East Coasters will have to enlighten us...
Remember when Juliet "escaped" with Kate and turned on the fence? She said something about "Now we know it's afraid of our fence." But she stood there and watched it like she knew ahead of time what to expect (because she did, of course).
Then Ben turned it loose on Widmore's men after they killed Alex.
Haven't figured it out yet but it's not smoke and it's not a monster.

VERRRY true. Those two facts we know for certain! AND...if you don't run from it, it leaves you alone (i.e. Locke). ANNNNNNNNNND it gives you flashes of your life...as it did with Mr. Eko.

Also, for some reason I thought they built the fence to protect them from the monster (aka, it was built specifically for the monster)??

Ah, well, I'd better brush up on my popular culture or make more trips to So Cal.
Yeah, I liked that too, just about the only thing I liked about the meeting in the church. So much build up to that and then so little revelation.
There WAS no revelation. Nothing that woman said made any sort of sense...(other than her comment about Ben lying). "So yeah, in order to get back to the island you need to recreate the Oceanic flight as best as you can...and the 06 all need to be there...well yeah...except for Aaron...and oh, yeah...Ben's going to be on the flight even though he wasn't initally...and another thing, Locke is dead and is going to play Christian on this flight...so you need something of your dad's...shoes? great!...and look, they're a perfect fit!" COME ON!
I meant that the most we learned was that it was a Dharma station supposedly that helped to find the island's location. So I thought, Aha, now we're on to something.
But instead we just see this lamp swinging around (I kept waiting for it to hit Desmond) and hearing a bunch of blather about recreating the flight and taking Locke along. It just got sillier and sillier. Desmond made more sense than anybody, telling them they were all crazy to want to go back. When Mrs. Hawking told Desmond that the island wasn't through with him she could have elaborated a little but the way she was explaining it there wasn't anything else for him to do but walk out. If they'd all had any sense, that's what they would have done as well.
Then Ben is up in the church "praying" when Jack finds him? And he tells Jack all about the Apostle Thomas! Uh, maybe I'm assuming a lot because of my Catholic upbringing but has Jack never heard the expression "doubting Thomas" before? Jack did go to med school so I expect he has a fairly high IQ, hello? Unless Christian paid somebody to take his entrance exams.

hmm...you're right. Good memory, BD!! Then it still doesn't make sense. Why did it spare Locke?

Oh, well, I was remembering that after Mrs. Hawking gave Jack Locke's suicide note he went upstairs and found Ben kneeling in a pew like he was praying. Ben then showed Jack a picture of Thomas the Apostle and told Jack the story of how Thomas didn't believe in Jesus's resurrection until he saw and touched Jesus. Jack acted like it was the first time he'd ever heard it in his life. Maybe religious instruction was not a high priority in his family.

Since he was supposed to be the leader maybe it is protecting him. Also do you believe that Smokey takes on the bodies of some people sometimes. WALT, Goodwin's wife, etc...

Was Jack Catholic? I can't remember. I don't think his family was religious.
I was raised Catholic, even went to Catholic school....and didn't know the story of Thomas the Apostle. (But then again, I'm a shitty Catholic.)

Yeah, I remember. They tossed some dynamite down there and it let go of him. But Locke said he knew it wasn't going to hurt him.

Still don't know about the statue, BUT they focused on Sawyer stepping on something and stabbing his foot. They haven't followed up on this, other than him complaining a couple times. They don't do thing for no reason (usually), so I have a feeling it'll get infected, he'll have it amputated, and he'll do something heroic in the distant past that will cause a statue to be built for him.
Mikey, when you brought that up it was like an epiphany!! I seriously think you're onto something there.
Haha...I can't take complete credit, I think I read it somewhere else.

I seriously don't agree with that AT ALL. Why are you so insistent that they'd be persecuted? The O6 were victims of an unfortunate plane crash...not terrorists.
I'm not saying that they should be persecuted, but I could see an airline being reluctant to have them all on the same flight for liability reasons. Let's say for example the plane they're all on does crash (it might have for all we know.) When it got out that they were all on the plane together, could you imagine the potential lawsuits against the airline by the other passengers' families.
From a fiscal and a liability sense I can't see an airline letting them all fly together with the exception of Oceanic.
I'm sure their names would run a flag in the system computers - that's all I'm saying.

He was a sacrafice the Island required...oh wait...no, that was Boone.

Locke hadn't 'met' Jacob yet at that point.
But it seems that jacob is in control of everything going on with the Island
