It's so obvious only one person on the planet could disagree. When we were going at it last year i said wait until he gets hurt. Sadly he dosen't get the respect he deserves. Bad contract or not the dude PRODUCES!!!

yeah, he produces until the games really count come playoff time

it doesn't help that amaro knew howard was going to be out for a while and uses the pu pu platter of thome/mayberry/wigginton to play 1B

at least they have a closer though
    08??

yeah, that was only 4 years ago  . dude is a shell of his former self. he was pretty damn good from 06-08. from 09-current he's an avg 1B who's paid like a superstar.

the dummies justiying his playoff stats need to do some research. since the 09 WS he has been a total playoff liability. you would think this would be common knowledge for people that watched the games

I like the phils first few picks. Really don't like the dummy they took in round 2 though. Apparently he was a lightning rod for criticism in the state of Arizona. He had to transfer schools after his junior year because he punched a coach (the fact he was even eligible to play his sr caused a lot of scrutiny state-wide). Dude is enormous (like 6'6, 240)...has a full ride as a DE to play at University of Arizona. Sounds like a moron and the consensus is that the phils took him way too high (and possibly wasted a high pick if he goes the football route).

Some of the prep arms they got early look pretty damn good from the clips I have seen. The Iowa kid they got in the third sounds like a real steal

Hopefully we (I mean I, since no one else seems to care) will be reading about some signings real soon

Ha, that's pretty hilarious about the second round pick. What an idiot.

Signings are happening right away. Can't believe the first overall is signed already, much easier this year with the cap though.

yep, the deadline being moved up helps as well. will be nice to see these kids get started in the minors right away. so much better than them having to play winter ball and start their minor league careers the following year.

    now minaya...SIGN SOLER!!!

Yeah, definitely got to get them to A ball right away, Yanks kid is motivated to to get going and working.

I think the Cubs sign him. Perfect situation for them, I think. Would love for the Yanks to sign him though.

I'm betting on cubs as well. Theo hasnt really made a splash yet. I could see him signing soler, trading garza and/or dempster (and possibly lahair, who should bring nothing in return), then the theo slurping will commence

Haha, yeah. I definitely think Garza and Dempster will be traded. No reason not to, they aren't going to help them win. Garza should get them a good prospect or two. I know Yanks have/had some interest. Garza is a douchebag, but I like him as a pitcher.

    so frustrating...

Cole Hamels is positioned perfectly for free agency, because it appears there will be nobody else like him on the market in the fall, assuming he doesn't sign with the Phillies. (And as of Thursday evening, his contract talks with the Phillies remain dormant.)

looks like this beast could get promoted to AA before the year ends. phils need more good news like this

Biddle has been nearly untouchable for almost two months now. Since giving up seven runs (four earned) in his April 19 start, Biddle hasn't given up more than two runs in any of his eight outings since. He has the fifth-best ERA in the minors over that span at 1.17 in 46 innings, and his mark for the year has dropped to 2.51. He's gone seven innings in three consecutive starts, but his outing last Sunday against Palm Beach was his best yet. Biddle fanned a career-high 12 hitters and retired the last 11 he faced. He ranks third among FSL starters in opponent average (.221) and leads the league in strikeouts per nine innings at 10.05 (64 in 57 innings).

Until he goes to Boston for Youkilis ;)

I wouldn't wish that on the Phillies, or any team aside from Boston.

Forfeiting the 1st round pick for Papelbon caused me to lose interest in the draft. Sorry.

Good to hear about Biddle - one bright spot at least.

pretty weak excuse man. 40 rounds + barren farm system + roster full of aging overpaid stiffs = vitally important draft

Look, I'm not a fucking baseball scout, and I don't follow baseball prospects all year long, since it's, you know, not my job. I'm happy to read your analysis and other people's.

They end up not signing probably over half the guys anyway - I find it more interesting once they're already in the system.

I don't pretend to be a scout either. The MLB draft isn't like the NBA or NFL draft where you get to see these guys on TV before the draft (though I did love jackie bradley jr last year after watching him in the college WS. really wanted the phils to take him with their first pick and of course they passed and he ended up going to the bosox the pick right after the phils. IMO that was earl thomas/brandon graham all over again, especially since bradley is killing it at high-A this year. he should be promoted to AA any day now, and realistically could be in CF for the red sox as soon as 2013). I do read a lot about phils-related minor league stuff because it's directly tied to the future of the team.

Will be interesting to see how hard slotting and the reduction to 40 draft rounds affects the percentage of draftees who sign. Historically I'd guess the success rate for signing players was around 75% for most teams annually. Draft spending caps and hard slotting might make college more appealing to the prep players...especially those who don't go as high as they expect.

At any rate, draft success is imperative to a team's future prosperity. It's like that in all sports. I love reading about the future of the phils. especially since the current version of our local MLB product sucks so badly. I need something to look forward to as I watch amaro's financial & strategic ineptitude continue to decay this franchise. After experiencing a championship for the first time in 08, I can say that the journey to the top of the mountain is much more enjoyable than the decent...especially when that latter is as precipitous as the one this team is facing. Hopefully amaro slips into the abyss on the way down, never to be heard from again
