I think everyone knows there not a good team. My problem with you last week was they were playing good and you were still ripped them. ENJOY the ride SOMETIMES because u never know when its gonna end.
Were we differ is if this team blows for the next 10-15yrs i can look back and say man that run was nice. You on the other hand will only have 1yr that u enjoyed. Maybe then you'll look back and say man why didnt i appreciate what i had more back then.Go Birds!!!!0 -

Ugh, that's depressing. I guess the point is that the offense is actually what we could've expected, or maybe a little better. The injuries to the pitchers are the reason the team is struggling so much; and pitcher injuries are something that affects almost all teams every year.
Every time Fontenot comes up to bat I find something else to do. How is that guy still in the Major Leagues? :roll:Spectrum 10/27/09; New Orleans JazzFest 5/1/10; Made in America 9/2/12; Phila, PA 10/21/13; Phila, PA 10/22/13; Baltimore Arena 10/27/13; Phila, PA 4/28/16; Phila, PA 4/29/16; Fenway Park 8/7/16; Fenway Park 9/2/18; Asbury Park 9/18/21; Camden 9/14/22; Las Vegas 5/16/24; Las Vegas 5/18/24; Phila, PA 9/7/24; Phila, PA 9/9/24; Baltimore Arena 9/12/24; Pittsburgh 5/16/25; Pittsburgh 5/18/25

I don't enjoy losing, especially as the odds on WS favorites. Glad you did
I enjoyed the ride from 07-09. Got to attend 5 of the 6 WS games in philly (only one I missed was the PJ halloween show, but I ponied up extra money for a cramped spectrum suite so I could watch the game and the concert)...the utley/burrell homers in the NLCS vs LAD...and the rollins hit vs LAD...the halladay no hitter came later, but that was pretty awesome to be at as well. I also saw the end coming the minute howard signed his contract. Those posts are still here if you want to go back and remind yourself how dumb most people sounded attempting to justify what was the beginning of the end. The juan uribe/carpenter games were not real fun to attend.
What is the common theme here? The sucking accelerated once gillick stepped down.
I saw the other day that the phils have already wasted close to $8 million (approximately 6.5% of the total value of the asinine deal) due to the howard contract. Savvy stuff0 -

You said they could've signed one of the other big 1B coming up for FA like Pujols, Fielder or A-Gon. The first 2 got even more outrageous contracts (A LOT MORE outrageous) than Howard, and Gonzalez was traded for and signed by Boston and was never available. Also Votto got a contract almost as ridiculous as Pujols & Fielder. Would you really want to be paying Pujols $30M when he's 44 or whatever is is?
Look, nobody else here loves the Howard contract either, and he has seemed to deteriorate, to my eyes, pretty significantly since that clumsy ankle injury in 2010. It's certainly not measuring up too good at the moment. We can only hope he recovers and goes back to become a productive cleanup hitter. But I'm still glad it's not a fucking 10-year deal for half a billion dollars.
My point here is that it was a false choice. You said it was Howard or one of those other guys, but that wasn't really an option. The real choice was Howard for an oversized long-term deal, or something from the farm or something like the mess we have this year. The real mistake Amaro made was he gave him the deal at least half a season too early.Spectrum 10/27/09; New Orleans JazzFest 5/1/10; Made in America 9/2/12; Phila, PA 10/21/13; Phila, PA 10/22/13; Baltimore Arena 10/27/13; Phila, PA 4/28/16; Phila, PA 4/29/16; Fenway Park 8/7/16; Fenway Park 9/2/18; Asbury Park 9/18/21; Camden 9/14/22; Las Vegas 5/16/24; Las Vegas 5/18/24; Phila, PA 9/7/24; Phila, PA 9/9/24; Baltimore Arena 9/12/24; Pittsburgh 5/16/25; Pittsburgh 5/18/25

Have we underachieived i'd say yes. Would u rather have what we had or what we had in the 90's? The problem i see is you've been spoiled and u expect to much. How about enjoy the 162 games and then see what happens. If all u do is look straight to Oct then your missing the ride.Go Birds!!!!0

the difference between howard and those other players you named is that howard was already in his decline phase when he signed. The others are all in or just entering their prime years (the way utley was when he signed his deal...that turned out shitty for the phils becaue of a chronic injury that no one could have predicted).
Yes, I would be hesitant to give any player 10 years, but if given the choice I would rather have votto or fielder for 10 years (including part of their primes where they have a good shot at performing to a level which correlates to their annual salary...at least you have a chance of getting a positive return on your investment) than howard for 5-6 of his decline years (where he has zero chance of justifying his annual salary). It's all about ROI, a concept all too foreign to amaro
They didn't 'have' to sign any of them. They could have pursued other options once howards' contract expired (or signed him for a more reasonable rate, especially after he blew out his achilles)...a lesser player like luke scott or josh willingham to use in a platoon role until a guy like jon singleton was ready for the majors. that would have allowed them the financial flexibility (pat gillick term) to make a major committment to a deserving player like cole hamels
this is the same shit I said when howard signed the deal...same shit I've been saying since he signed the deal...same shit I will be saying until 2017-2018 when the deal finally expires. start the countdown
this franchises' situation is depressing. I'm going to happy hour0 -

why is there a choice?? they won in '08. were odds on faves to win it all in '10 and '11. that's not 'expecting too much' to ask them to live up to their expectations (or at least come close to achieving the expected goal). the 90s have nothing to do with this team coming up short over the last 3 seasons (they are close to making it 4...how long has amaro been GM?? hmmm).
My expectations are symmetrical to what I see when I watch the games. We are 2.5 months into what has been a train wreck of a season. This team can absolutely still make the playoffs due to the poop in their league, but even if that happens I'm not expecting much since this team just isnt' good.0 -

Helium is fucking awesome, such a cool venue. I can't believe it has taken me this long to get there. One of the dudes from the Pat Burrell video hosted, was really funny. Norm McDonald is out of his damn mind. Hilarious. I have to get back there.0

Preston & steve on WMMR mention that place a lot. They have comedians on there all the time promoting it.

the other day a friend asked me the following....
'if you could invite 5 famous people to spend a weekend drinking/doing drugs with, who would they be?'
I'm still thinking about my answers, but I think kimmel and/or mcdonald would be tough to leave out. I'd need a funny, ball busting type in my group. plus they both seem to enjoy the sauce
finally got to frankfort hall today. cool spot.0 -

Rumor has it, Norm McDonald doesn't drink or anything anymore. Which I find very though to believe. Dude is fuckign hilarious though.
Yeah, that place is sweet. Some good outdoor spots in the city now, even if the Piazza isn't one of them anymore, jesus.0 -
anyone else make it down to Camden Yards this weekend? went down for the game friday night. great day and night. Hadn't been down there in 6 or 7 years. still a great ballpark. seats are so darn close to field even in upper level. way closer than CBP. and lots of leg room between seats.
not being able to see field from concourses really makes you appreciate CBP for that though.
love that our manager just flat out refuses to use papelbon in tie games on the road. the old fucker rather use a minor leaguer is his 1st game ever. granted i know it's not done much but when your team is sinking you might want to actually get your own viable bullpen guy out there once in a while. this teams has to have one of the worst records in extra-inning games in the majors. i don't recall them winning more than 1 or 2. and most of them are because charlie and the bullpen suck.0 -

you forgot to include the lineup.
manuel is a turd. if this team hired jim leyland when they had the chance they would have won multiple titles with this core.
I really think they need to look at trading Victorino, Pence, and Lee (assuming douchy ever signs hamels, which at this point isn't looking good). They also need to get brown up to play LF every day.
Tonight we get to watch kendrick...the infield includes wiggingon  , martinez  , and fontenot  . Can't believe I'm saying this, but I will probably be flipping to the phils during commercials of the nba finals. First time that has happened in over 10 years.0 -
