Another point the article didn't make is that ouside of the howard monstrosity, the phils have done a pretty good job of not committing long term to aging players. ibanez is gone, polanco only has one year left, schneider is gone, etc. Most of their contracts are manageable. If they keep their payroll at the current level, they should be able to find free agents to replace these guys. Not the ideal strategy as having prospects to fill in is a better option, but it's not the end of the world either. especially if the kids they have in AAA (schwimmer, defratus, aumont, etc) can fill out the pen in the next year or so.

My buddy and I were talking today would you rather let Madson go and re-sign JRoll and then use Bastardo as your closer ?

Or keep Madson and let Jroll walk ?

    Rollins > Madson IMO

I agree...especially with Jimmy's defense he still makes plays

Plus, add in Boras being Madson's agent I see a Werth scenario with some major over-bidding

yep, totally agree. plus I would never overpay for a closer

in other news, it's pretty awesome that the dbags keep winning. looks like the phils are gonna get a first round bye

ha...i just had the same conversation with someone at work. i'd resign rollins over madson too if it came down to it.

i can't believe this team is sitting on 85 wins and it's not even september yet.

Here's another vote for keeping Rollins over Madsen

I've always said, as Jimmy goes, the Phillies go

it just seems that way anyway

he is the heart of this team

But he could have struck-out or popped up and got no RBI at all and the score would be 0-0. It's a team game. If a guy can get to third with one out and another guy grounds out to get him, that's good teamwork.
25 million dollars a year and you consider an RBI ground out to be a good thing?

just pointing out how dumb RBI are for judging individual performance. should be a team stat like you said.

and Joey Votto has 3 meaningless hits in 3 games (big hit in the 9th with 2 outs nobody on and down 3-0 whohoo) but at least that makes his OBP and OPS look good :D

when Lee is on he is unhittable.

and who starts a game at 12:30 in the afternoon? weird time for thursdays game.

wow i never really looked at that. everyone just gets caught up in their home record. home field advantage...advantage: philadelphia.

remember all the years leading up to '07 this team would always win about 86 games? now we reach that mark in august like it's nothing.

...so much for them struggling to get to 90 wins this year huh? :)

another good thing about being a Phils fans is every game is pretty much 3 hours or less. if i was an american league fan, specifically red sox and yankees, i'd hang myself at how long those games are. you could almost drive between boston and new york with how long those games lasts. it's awful.

I was at the game last Wed when Kendrick sucked and Pelfrey nibbled - 3 1/2 hours I think. So painful. Imagine every game like that. Ugh.
