Sorry.. still don't get the connection... and I haven't a clue what you mean about the 'other side'.
Hippies rioting in Seattle in the 1990s warning of the pitfalls of the WTO... which have lead to the Global Economy and current gasoline prices...
vs.
People (quite possibly hippies) sitting is SUVs at McDonalds for 20 minutes with the engine idling and the A/C going full bore and complaining about the cost of gasoline.
...
What if I said it was "Blue Collar Union workers", instead of hippies... because the Union guys were up there, too. I take it.. you don't care for Union guys, either.
...
Still don't see the comparison. I think you're just going to have to pass on this one.

You're damn right I'm complaining because Exxon is bending me over....... but somehow that's just economics and I have to sit quietly and stop using gas.

Can't wait to drive to Pennsylvania next week. Should be real fun. I've got a 2.5L V-6 Camry. Hopefully I can get around 25 mpg highway. My trip is about 1,200 miles round trip, plus a couple hundo in driving between the ballpark for work and my extended family's homes for visiting. Figure 1,400 miles divided by 22 mpg is about 64 gallons o gas. I think I've got a 15-gallon tank. I guess I'll have to fill up five times to have some fuel left for driving to work when I get back home. Damn! That's like $300 in gas! Gotta get a job where I can afford a new car. Of course, I like the V-6 b/c it's nice to step on the gas and have that bitch go with some motivation."Almost all those politicians took money from Enron, and there they are holding hearings. That's like O.J. Simpson getting in the Rae Carruth jury pool." -- Charles Barkley0

or $40 billion profit per quarter. or enough to send their CEO out the door with $350 million. But hey, times are tough for them too. The next CEO may be forced to retire with just a $300 million package0 -

AWESOME! If the profit was $40 billion, then the govt. is taking in $45 billion per quarter.

Someone made a point on the radio here in DC today. He said I'm glad gas prices are high and getting higher. What he meant was that Americans will now have conserve what gas they get by having to walk more often, bike more often and get by without going to get fast foods or out to eat.
Cook more often at home and in general bring the family closer together. Also this may create a more healthy America and it's already known we have become an unhealthy nation. He said he hopes it gets to $10 a gallon, I can see and agree with his point but $10 a gallon?

The National Average of combined State And Federal Taxes is about .40 per gallon (13%). Here in California... it's something like .36 per gallon (combined State and Federal Taxes).
ref. http://www.lib.umich.edu/govdocs/dn08/dn08gas.html
...
So, if we subtract the .40 cents in taxes... and the .72 cents you say are what oil companies make... that leaves $3.09 per gallon (that I paid today) that is left unaccounted for. We know is doesn't go to the gas station owners... where does it go?
I do not believe that on the $4.21 per gallon of gasoline I paid today... that $3.49 of it went to taxes.
...
Also... Exxon Mobile profits for the past 12 monts was 164 Billion dollars.
"And at first blush, many would agree. Over the past 12 months, for example, ExxonMobil has made pre-tax profits of $164 billion on sales of $369.5 billion. That's a lot."

the station makes some dough, and the .72 per gallon is net profit, not gross revenue.0 -
JOEJOEJOE wrote:the station makes some dough, and the .72 per gallon is net profit, not gross revenue.
Well... let's say the numbers are correct...$4.21 per gallon... 44% Oil Company Profits... 13% combined state and federal taxes...
44% of $4.21 is $1.85 per gallon (ExxonMobil profits)
.85 goes to (State and Federal) taxes and California (State and local) sales Taxes at the pump.
...
$4.21 - 1.85 - .85 = 1.82 per gallon.
$1.51 per gallon is going to buying the oil, refining it and distributing it to the retaliers and retailer profits.
...
Forgot to factor in State and local Sales taxes... California = .31 per gallon.Allen Fieldhouse, home of the 2008 NCAA men's Basketball Champions! Go Jayhawks!

We just have to face reality... the oil companies will charge what people are willing to pay. Why give us a break when they can sell that same gallon to someone in China willing to pay 5 bucks? You, me some guy in China... we are all the same to the oil company exec. They have no loyalty to us.. just themselves.
Reading your posts, and once again, pretty much in agreement with much of what you are saying. Wasteful society. Especially the type of cars people buy. Thing is, you can get an SUV that gets good gas mileage. Toyota highlander hybrid, ford escape hybrid, jeep patriot, Saturn somethingorother.
I havent seen you mention the american auto companies yet, though.
While demand is mostly to blame, many american people want to buy "american" cars, but american cars dont offer much in terms of MPG, at least not decent sized ones.
I read that GM is closing 4 plants in the U.S. and may discontinue the Hummer. Its about time. I know, people are consumers, and they buy what they want. But there are people like my dad who doesnt want a truck, doesnt want a tank, doesnt want a cadillac....he just wants a sedan type car that gets good mpg.....but her refuses to buy a toyota because we fought Japan in WWII. As a result, hes probably going to buy a car that is "american" but gets worse gas mileage....simply becasue its american.
Its too bad the US automakers didnt have the foresight to see this coming long ago. Jobs could have been saved, gas could have been saved, and the environment would be better off.
its too bad they are in bed with the oil companies in the first place.Turn this anger into

We all should buy little mini fucking cars and screw them all up!
My Hyundai get 32 mpg and I spend 42.00 to fill up.I will hold the candle until it burns up my arm. I'll keep taking punches until their will grows tired. I will stare the sun down until my eyes go blind. I won't change direction and I won't change my mind.0 -

I found the lowest in town and that was $3.92 reg, The subway is MORE expensive however riding the 32 miles roundtrip to work is looking more enticing.
