  • I do think it's important to be handy around the house, though. Is it something people can learn?? I mean, I've always considered myself pretty handy with stuff...but is it a skill that can be improved on??

Again, knowing you are not handy would be the first step towards improvement.
Cause I'm broken when I'm lonesome
And I don't feel right when you're gone away

Ignorance is bliss...I'm sure many people (especially men, with the whole testosterone thing) want to believe they rock the handiness.

    It is frustrating.
Kind of like watching a man smoosh down a hamburger as it is on the grill....

Absolutely not, and that's why we moved from a house in Ohio to an apartment in NYC :p
... and the will to show I will always be better than before.

AC i think you can learn anything, i knew jack shit bout a car cause my dead beat dad never did the fatherly thing and taught me, so i learned on my own and now if i feel theres something wrong i know what to do. and with a little help from some books now and then.
Ron: I just don't feel like going out tonight

my hog is the way to controlling the remote in my house :)

    i don't get this thread

if a guy is smart enough... then he can figure out how to be handy

    i bought a house 4 years ago

since then i've taught myself to

replace the seal on the shitter
    replace a different shitter entirely
replace the busted trigger on the shower
hang a chandelier in the dining room
hang a 2 lights in the kitchen
catch a squirrel in the attic
    replace the doorbell
    install a bathroom fan/light
    you get the idea

before i bought my house i had no idea how to do any of this shit

but when you need it done... you figure it out... there's instructions for everything on the internet!

now... my wife wanted new canister lights over the island in the kitchen along with a new switch... that I couldn't do so we hired someone

anyway... i'm going to stop rambling

what did you mean by handy?

Let's say you really dig this guy...he is cute, hot, whatever.
But he isn't the smartest guy...
But, he is really good at fixing things.
Would that be good enough for you?

yes, for short term -- or if you want some free remodels.

    no, for long term.

By handy I meant what you said you learned how to do.
My husband put some recessed lights in the ceiling, though. It is like being on a cooking show when the dimmer is on high. :)
Ok, I am not giving him enough credit. His heart is in it, but he just doesnt follow through or read directions.

Without sounding completely sexist...Do any guys? In my own personal experience, I don't know a single man who does read directions. But, like I said...that's been my experience...probably not true of the general public.

My experience is the opposite...most guys I know DO read the directions. I'M the one who doesn't. This could be the reason I get frustrated and give up easily.

Yeah, my dad refuses. Trying to install my a/c unit was a nightmare. He wouldn't even LOOK at the instructions so it took a hell of a lot longer than it needed to.
