I like those big ass red delicious apples...so Im probably eating 2 apples.

if your body cant find a use for the complex sugars in the fruit - then you may gain weight. but generally speaking - your body has to work for the sugars...so unless you have a seriously messed up metabolic system fruit should be fine for a snack...However, I agree that if you go for 5 fruits and veggies and you pile in more veggies than fruits you will be fine...but limiting fruits to one per day is a little silly.

and the 5 a day helps to ensure balanced diets...i actually eat what would equate to about 10 portions of veggies/fruits per day.

serving sizes of the fruit also matter...a very large apple may actually be 2 servings.

there's no reason to worry about calories per se, calories mean energy. I've never worried about calories. if you are hungry, it means you need them, that's how it works. (I've never understood all this "low calorie food" business...it's such marketing crap. if you are requiring 200 calories, and you eat 100, you're still going to be hungry). You need to think about eating EFFICIENTLY. That's why I don't like the cherry tomato idea- they don't have ENOUGH calories or any protein. what is the point of eating if you're not getting anything out of it?

for example, nuts have a lot of calories- they are an efficient food. meaning, you only need to eat a very small amount to get enough calories, protein, fat, and carbs to satisfy you. If you eat too much of a food like nuts, you will be eating too many calories. and if you are not satisfied after your snack, you will keep eating until you are. best to get it right the first time.

Hate to break it to you.. I yo-yo on fad diets and crap for a long time.. When I watched portion control and counted my calories, as I have been doing for the past year, I lost almost 40lbs and I am now at a healthy weight. I'm happy, full of energy, and I haven't been sick one time.

Basic facts, calories in > calories out = weight gain.. Obviously from your posts you have been listening to people that have no idea what they are taking about, or you heard them wrong.

Just pick a snack that works for you since you seem to shoot everyone down, and know so much.. why ask for our advice if we're all so "mis-informed"?

current science is finding that it is not so simple. I discussed this with my doctor today in fact, and she said she didn't believe it either. of course for some people, probably most people this may be the case, but not for everyone. for many people, there is more to it than that. nutritionists are telling people now to ballpark calories rather than obsess over them, and that behavioral eating practices are most important to make sure that one does not over eat, eats the right things, and maintains enough energy.

I lost 30 lbs when I wasn't counting calories at all. I have no IDEA how I lost 30 lbs, it just happened. I started GAINING what turned out to be 45 lbs at a time when I WAS meticulously counting calories (less than 1600 per day) and training for a half marathon, running between 9-12 miles 3 times a week and training in the gym 3 additional days. Currently I work out for no less than an hour and as much as 2 if running distance, intensely 4-5 days a week, walk at least 2 miles a day, always run whatever stairs I come upon. I consume roughly 1500-1800 calories per day on most days (I am not claiming I am eating perfectly, but I am not eating badly). If I am not exercising one day I try to eat less. I have gone from 155-160 lbs to 200 lbs, a size 10 to larger than a size 16. this has corresponding to many other medical problems, so obviously, it is not always as simple as calories in, calories out.

there was an article in scientific amercian this past september (actually, I think it was pretty much the whole issue) that backs up everything I've said here. don't try to dispute it until you've looked it up.

now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to kill myself because obviously, according to all-knowing GraySaturday, I MUST just be a lazy ass pig who eats whatever the hell crosses her path. fuck me, right. I know I'm a piece of shit, I don't need to hear it from you people.

Don't let us people on this board get you upset, just try and watch what you eat, don't eat after 6pm, and then walk and run three to four times a week!! :) You seem to take life too seriously at times and that's not good..I hope this doctor can help you with your diet woes and your mental health as well!!

Get rid of the crystal light. After I cut out artificial sweeteners my memory came back to A+! Not just memory either, but thought process.
I really screwed that up. I really Schruted it.

granola bars are EXTREMELY inefficient. bad, bad snacks.

Nuts are choked full of calories, you know that, right?
... and the will to show I will always be better than before.

They are everywhere, I agree! It wasn't an overnight thing to cut them out and I still have to hit my husband over the head when he brings home light yogurt... he'll learn. :D

I think she means that nuts have protein and good fats and granola bars are pretty much empty in terms of nutrition.

ok, but she always posts about eating healthy and gaining weight... nuts are certainly healthy but not that great for weight control, especially if eaten by the handful.

Hopefully she is all right...she seems very unhappy lately!! Why do people take things so seriously? I went back and re-read this thread and I guess some of us were a bit harsh with her!! I don't know, I guess she just got offline!

    Dammit!! :(

Name a time where she is NOT unhappy. PLEASE.

People just try to give her helpful advice and she refuses to believe it and thinks she knows everything. There was no reason for her outburst.

And this thread will probably be closed soon.

  • I need ideas for healthy, efficient snacks to bring to work. The only thing I can ever think of is nuts and we already have a big supply of those in the office. I've been eating a handful of nuts for my snack for like 8 years and frankly I'm a bit sick of it. whatelse can I eat???

unsweetened cereral, like travel size corn flakes, (bring your own milk)....today I brought a bowl of honey combs in tuperware to work..it was so good....

there was an article in scientific amercian this past september (actually, I think it was pretty much the whole issue) that backs up everything I've said here. don't try to dispute it until you've looked it up.

i once read a magazine article that global warming was a myth... i also read another one that said it was definitely happening... its called opinion.

i read one of your threads looking for advice on whether you should play the guitar again after a 10 year break... people gave advice and you shot them down on that thread as well...

you've asked for advice from people on a healthy snack and yet you've read scientific magazines proclaiming 1 piece of fruit per day is enough and that fruit should only be a locally available fruit, etc etc etc.

dont ask for advice if the advice received is always going to be routinely debunked by you every time.

surely that scientific magazine gave an indication of what was an OK snack for you. or ask a qualified nutritionist... instead of asking us folks here on the forum.. after all, we appear to be very unhelpful :(
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

well I already eat one fruit per day and supposedly you're not supposed to have more than that (fruit isn't as good for you as people think).

That is just so wrong, five portions of Fruit and Veg a day kid, trust me I'm a gynaechologist.:)

    JK about the gynaechologist part.;)
