ha, I took about a month off, but I'm back full-force now. There is a gym less than a mile from where I work, so I hit it at lunch time (and just quickly eat my packed lunch as I work when I get back) so that I can go consistantly MWF and it doesn't affect my personal time at all.

That is a cool-looking device. I'll look into it.

I used to work out with an old-school lifter. He's strong, in shape, doesn't believe in any of that fad shit or supplements stuff. Anyway, he said anyone who is "in-shape" should be able to do 50 pushups in a row and 3 sets of 10 pull-ups (palms-forward).

I hear you, at my boxing gym most were these old school types (well, aside from the heavy lifting). I've never been interested in getting big..just want to be in the best shape for my frame..The 50 push-ups and 3 sets of 10 pull-ups are a great example of this. I'd also add that you should be able to run/jump rope for at least 30 minutes continuously..sure, the meatheads in the gym have six packs and can barely wipe their butts, but most of them are not really in shape..

    Pull-ups are the shit.

Any dude at the gym who looks "fit," not just your meatheads that can squat & bench 600 pounds, those dudes do pull-ups and lots of them. I hated them & avoided them for years because they were so hard and straining...there is a reason they are so!

When I saw Will Smith in "I Am Legend" I was like yeah, I gotta start doing pullups. My goal is to get to 3 sets of 10.
when you say 3/10 on the pullups....how much time are you giving yourself between sets?

i will check back later....i need to do my routine.

50 pushups is doable but 3 sets of 10 pullups? Christ, I'd never get there.

Normal time, minute and a half or so.

I'm at 3 sets of 5 right now. Hope to be at 3 of 6 by the end of next week!

I saw a dude today doing 3 sets of 10 with a weight harness on, with a 45 lb plate hanging between his legs, doing pullups. That's crazy but the dude was lean and had a cut upper back.

    :D

should join the uni gym, free advice from human movement students

do you work out every day Don?

Nah doing 3 at gym (but very high intensity aka spew material) and a couple of days running. Id be happy to gym 5 days but still lifting some reasonable weights so need to recover. I had a massive workout yesterday (including 100 chin ups) so I can hardly hold my pen at the moment and beer in my hand last night was wobbly.

Im doing the City to Surf (14km) and the Oxfam 100km trek so trying to get as fit as possible. I hate running - it bores me to tears.

I just played soccer tonight, but I was playing D and we dominated the game, so I didn't get as much of a work out as usual, but still some sprinting and stopping and stuff.

Chin ups are funny like that hey. You lose it so quickly.

I always used to do chin (or pullups) neutral grip and could quite easily get out 5-6 sets of 12 with small breaks. The minute I went wide grip (or palms forward)....I got 12 then second set 9. Third set I made 4.

I was just so used to doing them a certain way. And tust me its taken 3 months to fix that little problem.

i am somewhat new to the whole exercise thing. i used to work and eat whatever crap i was near and get home and jump on the computer to play WoW for however many hours i wanted.

what's changed? well in the beginning of summer 2007, my father was diagnosed with lung cancer. while in the waiting rooms for whatever doctor appointment we were at, i would look around and see every race, religion, sex and age either awaiting an appointment or comforting a loved one that is awaiting an appointment.

so i started to watch what i was doing. then in may of this year, one of the people in our WoW "guild" suddenly died of a heart related issue. he was in his early 30's, only a few years older than me. that was my turning point.

since then, i have been trying my hardest to eat right, i bought a new mountain bike, and i am going to join the gym tomorrow as a matter of fact. i don't know how much weight i have lost as i always considered scales to be an enemy. my only proof of my weight loss is my belt. i had to move it in to the first notch (2 notches from where i was for a while) and could actually use a smaller belt! people are noticing and complimenting which is also helping a lot. so since i shared my life story of the past year, here is what i have been doing.

biking - 20-30 miles a few days a week (i always loved biking. my legs are tree trunks now)
    eating healthier things
    joining gym tomorrow~

by the way, so far my father seems to be clear of cancer. he has a pet scan and an appointment in the beginning of august. 2 surgeries, 10 weeks(i think) of chemo, 10 weeks (i think) of radiation and a new outlook on life.

QUIT SMOKING! it doesn't just affect you~

man, to do pull ups would be the ultimate for me. i had next to zero upper body strength. since doing the gym thing for the past 3 months which includes pushing and pulling between 6 and 25 kg dependent on the machine, i am now able to hold my 23 month old grandaughter above my head with one hand on a fully extended arm. her momma freaks out but no way will i drop her. and the little tike loves it. :D

Congratulations on the change in life style. And great news that your dad is doing o.k. Although I have always been pretty active it was when my mom had a severe form of breast cancer back in '96 that I got really serious about taking care of myself. I still eat too much and am a few pounds over weight, but working out has become part of my daily routine. When I don't work out I feel something is missing. And by the way, my Mom is alive and well.

Nah man definitely not a running event but a lot choose to. Our group envisages running about 25-30km. Whether we achieve it or not I have no idea.

None of us have done it before so not sure what to expect and I cant see too much running being done throughout the night.

One thing for sure - blisters!

I was going to the gym 5 days a week and riding my road or mt bike on the weekends but the birth of our daughter back in June put a damper on that. I don't miss the gym as much as the biking. Last weekend I went for an easy 12 miles on the road bike which felt really good after words. At the end of August I'm doing a 24 hour mtb race so I guess I need to get back on the saddle or it's going to be a long 24 hours.
