I think the east is a little out of their reach at this point, not impossible, but, certainly not easy.

    I'll take this scenario ...

    Win the wildcard.

    Beat the Angels
    Beat the Yankees
    Beat the Cardinals

If Beckett keeps giving up 5 plus runs it will be a short exit, even if we are lucky enough to squeak into the playoffs.

The Sox aren't squeaking into the playoffs. Their current odds to make the playoffs going into tonight are 82.5%.

I dislike to assume anything when it comes to the Red Sox however it sure would nice to steal this game from the Rays.

I guess it's more of are they a hot team rolling in or are they playing ok ball, and making it in based on a killer 1st half.

Now I think we have had a nice 15 game stretch recently, so it's not all bad, but if Beckett continues to struggle then we will have a hard time winning a series.

Now with that said, he picked it up during tonight's game, but dug a huge hole early.

Really would like to steal this one tonight.

  • Well considering we tied it in the top of the 8th now we're down 3 it ain't looking well at all.

We've always as past years had trouble with the Rays.

Easier said than done in that the NL is so weak compared to the AL. He couldn't keep up with the power of the AL especially the AL East division. He should fare well in NL cause they're not many hitters than are feared compared to the AL.

BTW you're welcome from a Red Sox fan.

his first win came against the phillies, who are pretty fine hitters ... probably better than 3/4 of the AL.

If they want to shorten their precious game, why not take out a commercial or two here and there ... yeah, they'd never do that.

    Ridiculous.

I haven't missed a game in a while and have seen enough of Papelbon that, while he's a wackjob, he isn't that slow to be getting fined like this.

That's good cause I'm going to the the O's/Sox games on the 18th and 19th. It's like a home game cause Camden Yards is filled if not sold out with a majority Red Sox fans.

The Boston Red Sox are 9 games back and the magic number in the division is 15.
  • Sox are looking at the Wild Card and have been since the Yankees went Nuclear post ASB. However, making the playoffs is the important thing, and I think you see a lot of their weaknesses go away when it comes to playoff baseball. No need for a 4th starter in the ALDS and with the ALCS they can spot start anyone for one game. The bullpen is stacked the bats are back, and their top 3 starters are not what you want to face in October.

The season ahs been interesting and the Yankees will be deserving division champs. I think the Sox will get the WC and then as they say on Southwest Airlines......It's on!

Sox will win the wild card and as a Yankees fan I am always nervous about facing them in the playoffs however my hope is that the Red Sox and Angels will have a bloodbath in the ALDS with Boston winning. I like the Yanks chances at stealing a game in Fenway much more than LA.

  • 20 Games left. 4 games up for the Wild Card. It would be optimal to bury the Rangers and rest the starters. The Sox have no off-days after today.

The roatation looks solid 1-3 again and If Dice-K can be a servicable #4 I wouldn't want to face the Sox staff in the playoffs.

eh, even Lester and Beckett have been a touch inconsistant ... they are beatable.

But, once they get to the playoffs, anytihng can happen.

  • Beckett has been inconsistent, but Lester has been the model of consistency for the past 17 or 18 starts. Including 10 that he gave up 1 earned run or less. On mlb.com I read that during this 18 game stretch his ERA is 2.02 or so. I am excited about this rotation come playoff time.

Beckett has been inconsistent, but since June covering 19 starts (luckily last Friday was rained out because it was not looking good), the Sox are 15-4 in games Lester starts. He's 10-2 with a 2.02 ERA 149 K's, 39 BBs and only 92 hits in 129 and 1/3 IP over that stretch.
