My girlfriends younger brother wants to get his tongue pierced

Essex (don't laugh!). Even back when I lived in Cardiff (again don't laugh!) I remember the whole 'don't get your right ear pierced, it's gay' thing. Of course it's ridiculous, but IF it is in fact a fashion associated with gay men (any gay people here to confirm or reject it?), then by having your right ear pierced you may be perceived as being gay.
It's kind of like when I see goths dressed in their long leather jackets and white make up, and they get pissey when people make comments about their appearance. Hey, go right ahead and wear whatever you like (personally I couldn't care less), but if the community where you live isn't quite so liberal, you have to accept that you might catch some shit for it. The same goes for the gay right earring thing, if that's what people believe, don't be surprised if people think you're gay. Am I making sense?
Wait for it, I'm gonna get all philosophical here......It's almost chicken and the egg. Did gay people start wearing earrings in their right ear? Or did a myth start that they did? Either way the end result is that there is a general belief formed. The fact that someone on the other side of the world to me holds this belief, would imply that there is SOME truth in there somewhere......0 -

I'm in Canada...and we know the "rule" here too...
I made damn sure I got my LEFT ear pierced...
When I was 12 (ok 13)...
In 1987
I guess the problem with this is that even if it's laughable to the majority (not just this forum)...is if your standing there deciding which ear to pierce, and have heard this stupid rule....what other criteria would you base the choice of ear on? man, what a topic!
I seriously never got the impression that a tongue piercing was a widely regarded basis for sexuality stereotyping. There are certain piercings or tats that I find effeminite, but I wouldn't think them a reason for trying to take a wild guess at someone's sexualityIs that being pc or liberal, ...or just common fucking sense?

Yep, you get exactly what I'm saying! Glad I'm not going mad. I'm just sharing some of the commonly held beliefs in my area, whilst I don't agree with them - to buck the trend, the average joe round here would most likely assume you were gay if you had your tongue or right ear pierced.0 -

I see what you're saying. Having not grown up in such circumstances, I wouldn't think that way. But just because everyone around you believes something, it doesn't make it true (i'm not saying you think it's true).~AKA Dave-of-the-dead~

And I don't think it has anything to do with PC or liberalism, it's simple thought process, as with any stereotype.
I can see being momentarily taken aback because it's uncommon, or wondering why they would bother 'bucking the trend'...but to actually make that assumption is the domain of mouth-breathers and grade schoolers. It's not only making an assumption of sexuality, but assuming that everyone knows, or cares about the 'rule'.0 -
I have a natural hole in the lobe of my right ear, and have never had any piercings. What does that make me? A treeshagger?0

Ok so I've come into work and read this thread.
I'm dumbfounded and actually quite offended by some posts.
Tongue piercings homosexual? Some people really believe this?!
sexual yes, but homosexual?!
*scratches head*
Right, I'm female, have my tongue pierced and have dated men in the past with it done. I can assure you, they were not gay. I've even known men with belly button piercings and some other more 'personal' ones (not for discussion here) and again, heterosexual.
Piercings are done for an individual's own reasons. It could for oral sex, decoration, fetish... body modification a very personal thing and I don't understand how people feel they have the right to try and put someone off having one done, if the individual is old enough. If their not, age and legality should be the only reason they shouldn't get it done.
I've had 16 piercings since I was 15, everything from the bridge of my nose, to my nipple, to my tongue, and never once, in any of the piercing shops or people I've spoken to, has it even been suggested that tongue piercing's are predominantly homosexual. These thoughts are completely ridiculous.
I understand that not all people appreciate the act of skewering one's self with a canular needle and placing a hunk of surgical steel semi-permenantly through pieces of flesh, but people should leave others to their own devices. If your girlfriends younger brother (not even a close relative?!) wants his tongue pierced, let him make his own decisions.
Just to clear up two things:
* Piercings do not annouce an individuals sexuality.
* Tongue piercings do not make people lisp
Jeez....
makes me wonder if pjoasisrule's girlfriend would protest as much if he got his tongue pierced... I doubt itBeen to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

So it's not just me. I had a lot of male friends at school with one or the other ear pierced and it was never thought of as being related to sexualitySo are we strangers now? Like rock and roll and the radio?0 -

I forget who it was, but I saw an Autralian stand-up comedian do a bit about this kind of thing.
"It's so weird. Here in England, having an earring in your right ear... makes you gay. Which is strange for me, because back in Australia, having a cock in your arse makes you gay!"

But the fact anyone younger than me on this thread doesn't seem to have heard of that means that the OP IS in fact living back in the 80s
Also, first time I've heard of tongue piercing indicating homosexualityNEVER ever heard that one before.
