My girlfriends younger brother wants to get his tongue pierced

facepollution wrote:Oh I totally agree that it's a stupid stereotype, but nonetheless, that is what the vast majority of people think. Thus, if he goes ahead and gets his tongue pierced, he should at least be aware that a lot of people will make assumptions about his sexuality. All I was pointing out was that whilst I dodn't necessarily agree with the original poster, I can understand why they might have that preconceived idea - becasue it's a popular belief.
I dont know what the percentage of females is to males getting this done but I have known many many girls that have done it and no guys but the guys I have seen on tv and such were all homosexual. To me, its not much different than getting an earring in your right ear.Alpine Valley 2000

And to most right-thinking people, getting an earring in your right ear is not much different to getting one in your left ear.
I forget who it was, but I saw an Autralian stand-up comedian do a bit about this kind of thing.

How does a piercing affect sexuality?.... Don't gay women ever have tongue piercings? I bet they do.....
I'm a girl and ragingly hetero...and I have a tongue piercing....I'm not sure all these facts are related though....A human being that was given to fly.

Yeah I wouldn't say it was especially common among men, I know far more women who have their tongues pierced.0 -

LOL! I don't know where that assumption came from, but it seems to be widely accepted. Although it appears quite acceptable to have both ears pierced these days; I see loads of chavs with fake diamond studs in both ears.0 -
It's about the most mentalist thing ever, I mean why would you choose to have that pain and discomfort brought upon yourself? Only the though of a Prince Albert makes my eyes water moreI came, I saw, I concurred.....0

Seriously though... a tattoo is much more painful, and a whole lot more permanent.A human being that was given to fly.

It's all stupid, really. I mean, I'd never get my ears, tongue or elbows pierced, but what of it if someone does? I know you're just pointing out the accepted stereotype, and not really agreeing with it as such, so I don't mean to sound off on you.:) The OP's playground mentality just grates with me.Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.0 -

A mate had it done a few years back, he was in agony for a week, couldn't eat. He was pissed when he had it done...silly get! Now...Prince Albert, now that's gotta hurt, serious!!I came, I saw, I concurred.....0 -

I really do wonder who decided in the first place that right ear piercing would be a sign of homosexuality and how it became such a common way of knowing that persons sexual orientation.Alpine Valley 2000

Apart from a bit of bruising I was fine the next day... The tattoo took ages and itched like crazy...
I guess it's just a case of what bothers you most, and at least you can remove any and all piercings as soon as you get bored with them.A human being that was given to fly.

Well yeah I totally agree that people should be free to do what they want. As a side issue though, I find people being self-righteous (not you) about political corectness to be just as irritating as ignorant people.
I think we're all guilty of stereotyping from time to time, even if it's on a subconscious level - yet some people feel the need to aggressively lambast some people's stereotyping and portray themselves as some totally liberal and perfect person who never makes mistakes etc. I think in general it's far better to challenge people's assumtions on an intellectual level than just insulting etc.0
