My girlfriends younger brother wants to get his tongue pierced

  • Well yeah I totally agree that people should be free to do what they want. As a side issue though, I find people being self-righteous (not you) about political corectness to be just as irritating as ignorant people.

I think we're all guilty of stereotyping from time to time, even if it's on a subconscious level - yet some people feel the need to aggressively lambast some people's stereotyping and portray themselves as some totally liberal and perfect person who never makes mistakes etc. I think in general it's far better to challenge people's assumtions on an intellectual level than just insulting etc.

Well, there's being self-righteous, and then there'e pointing out sheer stupidity. If the OP had asked about the stereotyping that goes along with a tongue piercing, then fine. But he might as well as have typed "LOLZ! Tongue stud! Gayness!"

Ha ha! Having spent quite a while on this board, sadly I don't think it's inconceivable that someone would be that uneducated. In this case I don't think he believed all men who get their tongues pierced are gay, so much as 'what's the point of a straight man getting their tongue pierced?'
  • I told him that only homosexuals get that done. Why would a guy get his tongue pierced?

you have a lot to learn, kiddo.
  • I dont know what the percentage of females is to males getting this done but I have known many many girls that have done it and no guys but the guys I have seen on tv and such were all homosexual. To me, its not much different than getting an earring in your right ear.

Relax, no reason to get so upset about it. Obviously I am onto something because plenty of others agree even if not on this forum. That is the one thing I cant stand about this forum is the extreme liberal people on here that start talking shit no matter what your comment about gays is. I could make a thread where I said I think alot of gay people are good people and somebody would probably start calling me a homophone or something along those lines.

i'm relaxed. should have put a smiley face, i guess, as i'm just having a laugh at your expense.

too many good lines..."why would a guy get his tongue pierced?"...well, duh...

"an ear ring in the right ear"...seriously, i don't think i've heard that one since the 80's.

"a homophone"??? even your typos make me laugh, unless you thought it was actually homophone, which would be even funnier! :D

I think it is a standard practice for gays to get an earring in the right ear, how many straight guys have you met with an earring in the right ear? Oops about the typo too.

Whether this is meant as a joke or not, I can't tell...but what? I've met a lot of gay guys (before you laugh at me and call me gay, i'm not, my ex housemate was) and I never once noticed an ear ring in the right ear. If any of them had an ear ring, I probably wouldn't have made a mental note of what ear. In fact, i've never met any guy with an ear ring and paid any attention to what ear it was in, because I really don't give a shit, just like I don't give a shit if someone is gay or straight.

Generally, I don't query people on their sexuality....
At least.. not on the first date....

Earrings or any other piercing are not a good way of making judgements about people...

I don't want to defend an ignorant view, but in all honesty, where I'm from the vast majority of straight men would not have their right ear pierced (unless thye have both done). Like I said before I don't know if there is a genuine trend with gay men to have that ear pierced - but it is well known that if you have that ear pierced (where I'm from) that a lot of people would presume you were gay. There's nothing ignorant about stating this, it just is how it is. Perhaps this is just something unique to the part of the UK I'm from, who knows?

Hey, he's entitled to his views. But he's already made those views clear, and he's just digging deeper and deeper. At this point, I've gone beyond being annoyed by it, and I'm just enjoying the show.:p

This thread now irks me to the extent that I feel like gagging and vomiting all at once. I swear to god, If I die, choking on my own vomit from reading this thread I will be so fucking pissed :D

Not how I intend to go.

ps, no pjoasisrule, it is "not standard practice for gays to get an earring in the right ear". I can honestly say out of the 4 or 5 gay guys I know, NONE of them even have a piercing. I'm not saying no gay guys have a piercing in their right ear but you make out like it's some membership insignia or something. No one is arguing with you because they are "extreme liberals", they are arguing with you because every comment you post makes your argument a little more silly.

Essex (don't laugh!). Even back when I lived in Cardiff (again don't laugh!) I remember the whole 'don't get your right ear pierced, it's gay' thing. Of course it's ridiculous, but IF it is in fact a fashion associated with gay men (any gay people here to confirm or reject it?), then by having your right ear pierced you may be perceived as being gay.

It's kind of like when I see goths dressed in their long leather jackets and white make up, and they get pissey when people make comments about their appearance. Hey, go right ahead and wear whatever you like (personally I couldn't care less), but if the community where you live isn't quite so liberal, you have to accept that you might catch some shit for it. The same goes for the gay right earring thing, if that's what people believe, don't be surprised if people think you're gay. Am I making sense?

Wait for it, I'm gonna get all philosophical here......It's almost chicken and the egg. Did gay people start wearing earrings in their right ear? Or did a myth start that they did? Either way the end result is that there is a general belief formed. The fact that someone on the other side of the world to me holds this belief, would imply that there is SOME truth in there somewhere......

I'm in Canada...and we know the "rule" here too...
I made damn sure I got my LEFT ear pierced...
    When I was 12 (ok 13)...
    In 1987

I guess the problem with this is that even if it's laughable to the majority (not just this forum)...is if your standing there deciding which ear to pierce, and have heard this stupid rule....what other criteria would you base the choice of ear on? man, what a topic!

I seriously never got the impression that a tongue piercing was a widely regarded basis for sexuality stereotyping. There are certain piercings or tats that I find effeminite, but I wouldn't think them a reason for trying to take a wild guess at someone's sexuality  Is that being pc or liberal, ...or just common fucking sense?

Yep, you get exactly what I'm saying! Glad I'm not going mad. I'm just sharing some of the commonly held beliefs in my area, whilst I don't agree with them - to buck the trend, the average joe round here would most likely assume you were gay if you had your tongue or right ear pierced.

I see what you're saying. Having not grown up in such circumstances, I wouldn't think that way. But just because everyone around you believes something, it doesn't make it true (i'm not saying you think it's true).

I get what you're saying, but I'M saying that the average joe is an idiot if they make assumptions about sexuality because of a piercing! :D And I don't think it has anything to do with PC or liberalism, it's simple thought process, as with any stereotype.

I can see being momentarily taken aback because it's uncommon, or wondering why they would bother 'bucking the trend'...but to actually make that assumption is the domain of mouth-breathers and grade schoolers. It's not only making an assumption of sexuality, but assuming that everyone knows, or cares about the 'rule'.
