yeah, the weird thing I thought was "ok someone could be having sex in front of you and you would be all eyes. but hell, feed their babies and you are repulsed?" wtf??
I don't think it's fair to assume people are OK with seeing people having sex in public...I would be quite repulsed actually...and anyway live sex shows are in clubs and bars and stuff...not at a grocery store or on the roller coaster...
And to be honest, feeding a baby of any age is something that I've always been bothered by...breastfeeding is just annoying...can people not plan ahead, get their baby on a schedule...repulsed is not the right word...
And I don't mind aNiMaL...we've discussed many things before....oh, and if a boob is just a method of feeding your baby, why did Janet Jackson get such heat of her exposed nipple...it wasn't just men sexualizing her boob, women were too...a boob is a boob is a boob...
I agree. It's easy to look away. I see things in public that are offensive, strange, that make me uncomfortable all the time. If I don't want to look, I look away. (Hell, I relied on public transportation for years. I could fill an entire book with stories from the el. )
i have seen many, many, many women breastfeed in public and not a once have i seen a nipple. granted, i am not looking to see one, haha, but generally there is a big fat baby head right there, usally a cloth, and the fact that i even notice at all is sometimes you see someone and wonder, wtf are they doing? then you glance, see, say a-ha in your head and move on. hell, i think it would be a LOT healthier for all to see women in public using their breasts as nature intended rather than be bombarded with sexualized images of em only, in public. they are great for both of course ....but yea, i think it's a good idea for people for children, to view it all as natural and a non-issue..perhaps develop far more healthy views of women's bodies. just a thought.
for the record i don't have kids, no plans to, never will. i don't consider myself a 'fan' of breastfeeding, but i am a fan of people doing good things for their children. breastfeeding is one of those things. i am a fan of people being good to people and being understanding, especially for something that should be a NON-issue imho. breastfeeding is just that: FEEDING. it is what breasts are designed/made for. just b/c they CAN be sexual does not make them any less functional. all mammals have breasts, are they all viewed as sexual objects? sheesh. a baby is getting a meal. get over it. imo there is not one place on this earth that imagine should be considered off-limits nor inappropriate for a woman to breastfeed, beyond a place that is filthy dirty for mother and child to be in. it is amazing to me how sexualized things are, and yet, how puritanical we as a society can still be, for something that is NOT sexual. sheesh.
I agree! Reading this thread, I'm so baffled by some of the ignorant responses. They should be ashamed...if I ever meet animal and vedderfan at a meet-up I'll be tempted to throw an orange at their heads for being so daft.
It has been said, you can't always plan for a newborn, you can only pump so much milk, a new mom shouldn't be a prisoner in her house, LOTS of people eat in public, why shouldn't a baby? A baby needs food when it needs food. If you have a problem with it, get over it!

I don't remember Janet Jackson breastfeeding a baby during the Super Bowl Halftime show.
I think I already addressed this, but you can't always count on a baby's schedule. (In fact, I just had to pause while writing this post because my 2 year old, who started sleeping through the night at 6 weeks, randomly woke up and started crying.) When you have a baby, life must go on and you have to take the baby with you.
It has been said, you can't always plan for a newborn, you can only pump so much milk, a new mom shouldn't be a prisoner in her house, LOTS of people eat in public, why shouldn't a baby? A baby needs food when it needs food. If you have a problem with it, get over it!
i don't know WHY one should have to 'plan/prepare' for it, period. isn't that onwe of the beauty of breastfeeding? ready-made food on the go, right temperature, etc....feed at will? damn, thousands of years of evolutionary history muyst all be wrong. or damn the victorians for everything eh.
i far rather see a wee bit of exposed flesh, if i see any at all, of a mother feeding her child, ANYwhere, than to see someone's thong hanging out their jeans, nipples popping out of tops, etc. and hey, i'm no prude, more power to ya if that's how you want to dress and expose yourself, just not my thing. however, breastfeeding isn't about fashion, nor sex, nore meant to be 'annoying'...it's just the best nutrition for a bay. i do not understand why one would think a wom,an 'should' pump her breastmilk, etc...like it is a crime and shameful to feed a bay direct from her breast, anywhere. what-eeevvvverrrrr.......:p
Iif I ever meet animal and vedderfan at a meet-up I'll be tempted to throw an orange at their heads for being so daft.
Then I shall bring a pineapple...I am not daft because I don't agree with you...ease up on your harsh words there...and I am not ashamed of my opinions or any stance I may take on an issue...My signature says it all - and I guess here it really does apply.
i have seen many, many, many women breastfeed in public and not a once have i seen a nipple.
Neither have I. If I ever see a nipple while a woman is trying to breastfeed her child, I'll be quick to point out that the feeding works best when the nipple is in the child's mouth.
And yeah, one time a while before I had a child, I saw what looked like a woman trying to shove a baby under her sweatshirt. And then I realized she was just feeding it...lol.
I just think it's funny that breasts have become so sexualized that most people don't bat an eyelash at a nipple on a movie screen, but then are horrified by the idea of breastfeeding.

you'd think by some of these responses that when a woman is breastfeeding in a public place that she stands up on a chair, whips off her shirt, then her bra, then proceeds to announce "everybody look at my boobies!"
i mean sure just cause that's what i used to do everytime i breastfed one of my kids in a public place

Yet, somehow in the past (like ten years ago) women managed...managed to shop and have dinner without having to breastfeed. I am in no way implying that a woman has to be a "prisoner in her own home"...not an idea like that has entered my mind...Breastfeeding discretely in public is fine...like with a towel or blanket, but baring it for all to see just because you can? I do look away, and I do leave the immediate vicinity...no scenes are made and no comments are exchanged...

I have literally never seen anyone breastfeed in public without being discreet.
For a long time, formula was erroneously viewed and promoted as the healthier option. A lot more mothers are choosing to breastfeed than they were ten years or so ago. More breastfeeding mothers = more mothers breastfeeding in public.

hmmmmm...never in my life have i seen a woman breastfeed in ANY manner besides discreetly. you either live in an area with a high # of exhibitionist women ...or simply some were publicly out to make a point? out at any mall, wherever...discretion is always the norm. the average woman does NOT want to draw attention to herself, she just wants to feed her baby. for the rare people you might encoutner, odd to say the least...but again, i far rather allow that than disallow the right to breastfeed publicly.

I agree that it's healthier for a child to see breastfeeding than to hide it. My daughter already knows that breasts feed babies, because when she points to my chest and notices that there is something there that she doesn't have (breasts, lol), she asks "what's that?" I wasn't going to say "well, those are my hooters, honey. Daddy likes it when I wear low-cut tops." I tell her what they are, and what they're for...just like I do with anything else she asks about, lol.
Where are you people seeing a bunch of topless women running around feeding their kids? What exactly do you see that isn't covered?
i believe a good 10 years ago it was made legal in NYC for a woman to walk around topless, feeding a baby or not. i have not once seen a woman do so, however.

That's what I want to know! As it has been stated, most women cover with a blanket, and the BABY'S HEAD!! (DUH!) And they even have special clothes. Some people really need to get a clue.

HAHA!! You COULD point down there and say "this is my money maker" and point at your breasts and say "this is what I flashed on that video of 'girls gone wild!'"
Well, the situation in Vancouver and the breast-in in my community involve an awful lot of women who do not cover up...Lift their lulu lemon or MEC (like REI) and bare it all, this is almost the norm...And yeah, I went to a friend's place with a bunch of their friends (who we'd never met before) and we were all having breakfast around the table, and the mother of the baby just whipped out her boob, stuck the kid on and carried on talking...EVERYONE else was very uncomfortable...but that was clearly our problem...Oh my god! I was traumatized by a boob!!
I have literally never seen anyone breastfeed in public without being discreet.
exactly.... most breastfeeding Moms keep a receiving blanket in the diaper bag just a they would diapers knowing that the baby may have to eat while they're out...at least i always did and everyone else i've ever seen nursing their baby in a public place
where did it even say in the orginal story that this Mom was exposing her breast for everyone to see?
YThe women who get "militant" about this subject is what I find most annoying. Yeah, you can feed your kid. Big whoop...
The reason some people feel the need to be militant about, it is because mothers are often greeted with intolerance. The only way society is ever going to become reacquainted with the *actual* function of breasts is if they are confronted with it.

well, that IS odd but as you just said, seems the norm in your community/area, so i guess most aren't uncomfortable with it. i would find it odd to say the least ...but whatever. we are just so far removed from breasts being used for feeding that it makes us 'uncomfortable' and really, it shouldn't. obviously tribal cultures still walk around topless, both sexes, etc. obviously cutural and societal differences, degrees of modesty, prudishness, etc. if you were 'traumatized' by a boob, i would say that is your problem. being uncomfortable, i undertstnad...most of us are when in a new situation, exposure, etc. however, i still rather that than ever see public breastfeeding made illegal. as with all things, there are always some who take it to another level. i accept that, am ok with it, b/c i think the greater good is served by it's legality, and more and more people getting comfortable with it, etc. talking about extremes is not completely the 'norm'...and even if they 'whip it out' for a moment, soon enough a big fat baby head blocks the view in any case. c'est la vie......

A situation like you describe -- a protest -- isn't exactly the same as a woman feeding a hungry baby while going about her weekly errands. If they are being indiscreet in this situation, it is obviously for a purpose... But most women who are trying to feed an infant while accomplishing one or two other things simultaneously don't have the time to think about making a political statement.
Why was seeing a boob for a few seconds so traumatic? Do you feel uncomfortable when you see nudity in a movie?
Well, we're all just a bunch of dope smoking hippies in BC...Clothing optional!
There are some women who breast feed in the wide open just to cause a stir and then get extremely confrontational and defensive if someone dare suggest they might like a blanket...I agree...don't often see breastfeeding in public and most of the time I don't notice because I don't go around looking for it...but these women who make a big stink about it...whatever...it's not about YOU, it's about feeding your freakin' baby! Those sorts are the ones that wrinkle my rankle!

i'm starting to think that some people rather than know that there's a breast hiding behind that nursing baby prefer to listen to that baby scream it's big fat baby head off until Mom takes it home to feed it rather than upset there puritanical lil world

Let's just breathe...
I am myself like you somehow
A situation like you describe -- a protest -- isn't exactly the same as a woman feeding a hungry baby while going about her weekly errands. If they are being indiscreet in this situation, it is obviously for a purpose... But most women who are trying to feed an infant while accomplishing one or two other things simultaneously don't have the time to think about making a political statement.
Why was seeing a boob for a few seconds so traumatic? Do you feel uncomfortable when you see nudity in a movie?
