wow all of those fights look great. early predictions are
Mac - even though i'm a bigger guida fan i just think mac will be able to survive until he can catch clay in something
Nate - Sorry i'm a huge Diaz fan and have no reason not to cheer for him in this fight
Gray - Matt looked incredible in his last fight but i still think gray can pull this out
Houston - i hope he can land a huge punch to take out schafer... if not then look for schafer to catch him in a sub early in the fight. pretty much if it goes to the ground houston is done
Joe - He's awsome and i have no reason to think he won't win this fight
Ed - Tough fight to call, i'm going to go with ed because i think he can get the tko here. Belcher is going to be determined though after the montreal fight and can catch ed with a sub if he's not careful. still i'll take ed by tko"I'll ride the wave where it takes me"

GRAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(can you tell I'm excited?) Seriously, he's been fighting A LOT in this past year! I personally think he deserves a better opponent than Wiman. I mean if Mac is getting Clay Guida then shouldn't Gray be matched with someone a little higher up in the lightweight division. I may just have to call Joe Silva and give him a piece of my mind.
ps Sorry I've been a little mia lately. I actually just took my last exam of third year of medical school this morning. I am officially now on vacation for 9 whole days!
ps #2 Can I assume you are not in Hartford with a certain someone (cough, cough ... Ceg)?0 -

in any case, i hope you're up for a celebration soon. been a tough time for you recently, i'm sure. hope things are better today and you have a good one for your birthday.0 -

j bully! haha
actually, i think wiman is a good sign that he's a fight or two away from a title contention spot.matt's looked really impressive in his last few and just had a ko over thiago tavares for both ko of the night and fight of the night. just my thoughts initially on that one. my second thought was...this is a great matchup for gray!
i think he poses a lot of problems for matt and can grind him down, and put the fight where he wants it. i'm agreeing with leafs on this one.
congrats on the vacation! that's sweet! enjoy a lil' bit o' rancho relaxo!
...i am sad to say i am not with ceg in hartford. :(0 -

not sure if you've watched the strikeforce show, but the thomson vs. melendez match was definitely the highlight. tate vs. maxwell was also pretty good. i won't say who wins in case you haven't seen it...warning, though: the LHW title match was a chore to watch...zzzz....:D
looking forward to see some fresh profiles on patrick cote and ricardo almeida on the countdown show tonight.
oh yeah, i was watching TKO 32 on the fight network the other day and jesse bongfedlt, the WW champion, used yellow ledbetter as an entrance song!0 -
holy shit!
George St. Pierre nominated for an ESPY
MMAjunkie.com
Jul 01, 2008
UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre (16-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC), who avenged a previous loss and reclaimed the UFC's 170-pound title with a victory over Matt Serra in April, is a nominee for a 2008 ESPY award.
ESPN today unveiled the list of 37 categories and the corresponding nominees.
St. Pierre is the lone MMA competitor on the list of finalists for the "Best Fighter" category.
St. Pierre goes head-to-head with Kelly Pavlik, Floyd Mayweather, Joe Calzaghe and Holly Holm -- all four of whom are boxers.
No other MMA fighter, event or moment was nominated for an award.
St. Pierre, a 27-year-old French-Canadian, lost his title to Serra in April 2007 but has since rebounded for three consecutive victories. In addition to his second-round TKO of Serra in April, St. Pierre defeated Josh Koscheck via unanimous decision in August and Matt Hughes via second-round submission in December. He headlines next month's UFC 87 event against top contender Jon Fitch.
The 16th annual ESPYs broadcast airs July 20 at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN and ESPN HD.
The ESPY awards (Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards), a sports-achievement-recognition program created by ESPN, began in 1993. The awards have been determined exclusively via an online fan vote since 2005.
Voting is now underway at http://www.espys.tv.

I can't picture ledbetter as an entrance song but hell i'll take it at any time. Weird song to have though, i'd still go with blood lol"I'll ride the wave where it takes me"

i was a bit surprised too. maybe they will have a different category for mixed martial artists in the future.
yep, 50/50 throughout the card...should make for some entertaining and competitive matches! after a busy june, it seems like this one has crept up on us.0 -
some changes made to the unified rules of MMA recently. i like the idea of having more weight classes. we'll have to see how it works out as the rules are gradually implemented in each area. finally they have done away with the downward elbow rule (although my only concern there is eye sockets and cheeks, if someone is on top and in guard throwing a downward elbow..hmm...)
let's hope the referees start realizing what is actually the back of the head, now that they have stated the definition once again!
Commission updates unified MMA rules
by Steve Sievert
Jul 04, 2008
The Association of Boxing Commissions has ratified changes to the unified rules of mixed martial arts aimed at enhancing safety and altering weight classes.
The ABC, which provides regulatory guidelines for MMA and boxing in the U.S. and Canada, made the changes during its annual meeting Thursday in Montreal. Among the amendments passed to the unified rules, first adopted by the State Athletic Control Board in New Jersey in 2001, is clarification on what constitutes an illegal blow to the back of a fighter's head. The commission has defined this restricted area as the top of the head through the centerline of the skull to the spine, with a one-inch variance to either side.
Another rule change removes a restriction on the use of elbows to strike. The previous rule prohibited "downward pointing of elbow strikes." Those blows are now legal, except to restricted areas of the body, such as the back of the head mentioned above.
"Allowing downward elbows makes sense," Keith Kizer, executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, told MMAjunkie.com. "I think we were over-regulating that aspect with the way the rules were written. It's where the blow lands that makes elbows dangerous. The reasoning behind this change makes sense."
Kizer, whose duties associated with UFC 86 and a boxing event Saturday in Las Vegas kept him from attending the ABC meeting, adds that he is just learning about the revised rules and intends to review them in more detail in the coming weeks. He will take a particularly close look at a change to the light heavyweight division that shifts the weight range to 205 to 225 pounds. Previously, the light-heavyweight division ranged from 186 to 205 pounds.
"I don't get that one," Kizer said. "I'm surprised by it. I need to understand the reasoning behind the change. I didn't think there was a big concern over how the weight classes were structured. This change creates a significant weight differential in the division and leaves only a 40-pound gap at heavyweight."
The heavyweight division now has a revised range of 226 to 265 pounds.
It's at the discretion of state athletic commissions whether to adopt the unified rules.
While Kizer is a proponent of consistency and uniformity of rules for the sport, he doesn't expect the NSAC to adopt the revised regulations immediately. The NSAC typically reviews rules on an annual basis, with the next assessment expected next year.
The ABC is a nonprofit organization, with its membership comprised of state athletic commission representatives from across the U.S. and Canada.

I don't follow UFC, but a couple of days ago Jim Rome had Rampage Jackson doing one of his (lame) correspondent's pieces.
Anyway, they showed a clip of RJ flooring Chuck Liddell. I never suspected the UFC was rigged, but....
The punch never should have knocked down a badass UFCer.
And then, the three supposed punches to Liddell's head all hit the mat.
This shit is just like pro wrestling!!!If I had known then what I know now...

haha... that's funny.
in my limited MMA-watching experience, i've learned that a camera angle can make all the difference....
punches that look like they are hitting the mat from one angle, can actually be landing quite squarely on someone's ear, for example.
and you're right, Chuck is pretty badass..... but Rampage is a big dude too!!!~~*~~ ...i surfaced and all of my being was enlightend... ~~*~~0 -

i don't get it.... what is the 186 to 205 range called now??

from what i can gather with my limited iq, haha...there will be a number of new weight categories, but we'll have to see if they're adopted by each regulatory body first.
so i saw this posted after the article, but i'm not sure if these are the correct ones or how reliable the info is...
The fourteen weight classes include:
flyweight (up to 105 lbs)
super flyweight (over 105.1 to 115 lbs)
bantamweight (over 115.1 to 125 lbs)
super bantamweight (over 125.1 to 135 lbs)
featherweight (over 135.1 to 145 lbs)
lightweight (over 145.1 to 155 lbs)
super lightweight (over 155.1 to 165 lbs)
welterweight (over 165.1 to 175 lbs)
super welterweight (over 175.1 to 185 lbs)
middleweight (over 185.1 to 195 lbs)
super middleweight (over 195.1 to 205 lbs)
light heavyweight (over 205.1 to 225 lbs)
heavyweight (over 225.1 to 265 lbs)
super heavyweight (over 265.1 lbs)
oh, and good luck on the picks for tomorrow, ceg. they are tough!!!0
