sorry to break all the good news, but some bad news has come in.
Chuck Liddell (Pictures) has fallen off UFC's June 7 card in London, England, due to a badly torn hamstring, Sherdog.com confirmed Monday.
The 38-year-old Liddell (21-5) was set to fight Rashad Evans (Pictures), himself a replacement for Mauricio Rua (Pictures), at O2 Arena in the main event of UFC 85.
Multiple sources tell Sherdog.com that Sacramento, Calif.-based light heavyweight James Irvin (Pictures) could be the man to fill Liddell's large shoes, though the bout with Evans (11-0-1) has not been filled at this point.
leafs, this is crazy, but we were right next door at mclean's at the same time you were at peel pub, it sounds like! we walked by the line at HMV thinking it looked way too long...only to find out while at mclean's that those guys were there. ceg really wanted to meet roger too! actually, i think we all would have liked to meet those guys. roger, dan and kenny is a pretty good group to meet.
jorge gurgel told us dan was in town (i realized later he was there with mark bocek so i guess they have been working together for some time), but it was another person in the bar who told us what had been going on at hmv. he also said there were no pics allowed, which i found kind of hard to understand...time restrictions we thought, maybe. they had to have been taking pics though! we went over there after saying thanks to matt hamill and jorge gurgel, and found that everything was done...
...BUT that's when we saw mac danzig with his girlfriend! me and releash spotted him and he turned around right away knowing he'd been spotted. they tried to turn down an aisle quietly, but i was rude enough to go interrupt and ask if we could get some pics. haha actually he was very nice, but i get the feeling he's a pretty shy guy and isn't in this for the fame...although we came to the determination that if he's out the night before the fight...theeen you kind of have to expect to have a few people ask for some pics or an autograph. i wanted to mention to him how much i admire his outlook on the sport, but i think we'd taken enough of his time getting the pics and letting him know that we would be rooting for him on saturday. it was a really nice surprise to meet mac, even if it was short and sweet. (like mac )
yeah, i think it was clear that everyone was pissed with kalib. i agree he's not a top level fighter, but he's good and can compete with many at MW. his win over abaddi was like feeding danny to the wolves so that was an easy one, even though kalib complimented and defended danny to a lot of people after the match, saying that people underestimate his striking. the okami match was competitive in the first with kalib almost catching him in a guillotine and landing a sweet double kick / double punch combo as well, but okami overpowered him from there and beat him up in the third to finish the fight with ground and pound. then the win over chris leben was a great fight (they got bonuses for that one), the fight with belcher was not good for him in terms of defense, but his hands looked better than i'd ever seen them. i was really looking forward to seeing him improve even more this time out, and maybe pulling out the victory after having the last fight called due to the "i can see skull" cut. what a huge disappointment saturday.. i guess we'll have to wait for an explanation. i think he owes one.
+1 on what you said about all those fights. i have a feeling that if marcus davis is able to beat mike swick in the UK, then they would likely set up a davis vs. alves rematch (apparently they had a "controversial" split decision that went alves' way and have been interested in meeting again ever since) to determine who get's the shot at the winner of fitch vs. st-pierre.
the pre-lims should be on the way tomorrow night. i also have the full length weigh-ins from yahoo, so i'll upload that too in case you or anyone else is interested. we really enjoyed the pre-lims, and then kalib's lack of effort kind of took the wind out of the sails. had that been a good fight, this would have been one of the better cards i've seen in a bit. then again, seeing it live certainly adds to the excitement and interest! and the main event...wow! no words...
i think dana white may have said the same thing to us on the street, but my memory of that is kind of foggy because of the surprise of seeing dana white on the sidewalk taking pictures with a relatively small group of fans! they definitely will be back.

wow, the main event that was outstanding has disappeared completely with both shogun and chuck out now. irvin vs. rashad would definitely be interesting, but not main event material. i wonder how they'll handle that.
wow... what a weekend!! Montreal is amazing... great friends, food, beer, patios, tunes, shopping, walking, talking, more beer, more patios, more walking, more talking, and lots and lots of laughs.....
the event on Saturday was amazing... but we also had a lot of fun on Friday afternoon! we met Dana White outside the Bell Centre and got a couple of photos. Dana was really kind and accessible. He was all smiles, and took the time to shake everyones hand and sign autographs.
Then we headed off to a pub for dinner, and happened upon a meet and greet with Matt Hammill and Jorge Gurgel inside the pub!!! got to chat with both of them and get photos. Both Matt and Jorge were incredibly friendly, and were excited to share stories about their training and fights.
after dinner, we started to wander around, and while browsing through HMV, we ran into Mac Danzig who was also kind enough to take some time for photos. We wished him luck in his fight, which obviously payed off...
Then it was off to the Xtreme Couture party, where we got to see Gray Maynard, Randy Couture, and Dan Henderson up close, but didn't quite get an opportunity to shake hands (or for ReleasH to 'examine' Gray's broken hand), but it was still exciting to be there. Skipping the line and being usherd in to the VIP entrance was pretty funny too!! : cool:
ok, i'll let mookie and ReleasH fill in the rest....
i miss you both, just a 'little bit'.... xoxoxoxox
indeed! as you may have noticed i took the liberty of taking a few pages to make up for lack of speaking.
in an effort to find any news articles about whether or not there were any "riots" on saturday after UFC 83 (which we couldn't see or hear from inside our music and wine filled hotel room ), i found this annoyingly two sided article in the Globe and Mail:
On Saturday, one of its most attractive stars, Georges St-Pierre, was the main-event headliner in front of a hometown audience at the sold-out Bell Centre. He is terrifically athletic, possesses remarkable technical skills and agility and seems like an entirely decent guy.
well, that sounds pretty positive!
There's the line. It doesn't matter if you understood that Serra would be just fine, though awfully sore, afterward, that MMA is strictly regulated, that it is safer than boxing, at least in the sense that the fights are shorter and the combatants don't absorb repeated blows to the head.
also an important point...
The UFC has played hardball in the interests of remaining a de facto monopoly, controlling championships, controlling fighters (and their paydays) and dictating the storylines and the matchups. They shortened everything, and all but mandated action. If you don't like one fight, be assured there are 10 more coming. And if you come to see someone get bloodied and beaten up, then there's a 100-per-cent chance of satisfaction.
Not everyone is buying. By and large, the mainstream sports media still shy away, aside from occasionally playing the freak-show angle. (The UFC can live with that, since most of its core audience aren't reading the morning paper in any case.)
ha! talk about building you up, and then cutting you down! lol!
~~*~~ ...i surfaced and all of my being was enlightend... ~~*~~
...actually no i'm not. i wish i was still living out the dream that was this weekend. let me first start by saying that i couldn't have had two more beautiful, kind, and fun people to share it with than ceg and releash! i had some trouble saying goodbye ...as ceg will atest to...although, it's just goodbye for now...
awwww... thanks mookie. i couldn't have asked for two better travel companions either! i needed you guys there to fill me in on who's who, and what's what!
next, congrats to leafs for winning the title in montreal. i'd hoped to defend, but you were too much for me this time. i guess you were in the role of gsp and i was matt serra! haha nice work with the picks!
i didn't tell ceg and releash, but i soiled myslef many times during the show! to see goulet come out to that ovation then get a huge win, then the debut of cain, a sweet battle between rich clementi and sam stout, the beautiful jiu-jitsu of demian maia with his topside triangle choke on ed herman, jason day with a huge upset in his debut...and a great performance at that...he almost had a gogoplata at one point!!!...(edit: on further review he wasn't close to getting his foot over belcher's head, so i think i was still confused about when it happened. must have been in mac's match with bocek. day still landed a lot of damage while belcher was stuck in the rubber gurad, though. those elbows he threw after the stand up were strong!)
then...an incredible round of grappling between jason macdonald and joe doerksen! wow! it was beautiful to watch. both guys had what looked like sure submissions, but jason made it trough with the big win in the second in one of my faves of the night.
mac and mark continued the action to start the PPV...with mark bocek putting up a much better fight than i thought he would. when we met mac out shopping at hmv with his girlfriend, i told releash he really shouldn't have too much to worry about other than bocek's high class jiu-jitsu, but he showed some striking i hadn't seen from him before. ultimately, mac was too much...and again we almost got to see a gogoplata finish!!!!! still, to submit mark bocek is very impressive.
bisping and mccarthy...well, i missed the first half and had to get releash to fill me in on what happened as i was keeping my eye on david loiseau and jonathan goulet taking pics on the floor with fans...hoping i could grab ceg's camera and fall down the stairs to catch a quick pic. great finish by bisping! knees! oy-ee! oy-ee! oy-ee!
kalib and nate was a huge letdown. kalib is such a good guy. the three of us just sat there stunned. i don't know what it was, but i'm pretty certain he's going to be cut. the 30-24 score we all felt was accurate and deserved. i just don't know what to say...
great fight between rich and travis in the first, then as releash noticed and ceg too, there was something not quite right about travis in the second and it wasn't just that he was gassed. missing punches by a mile and having trouble keeping his balance. we were yelling for a stoppage, and fortunately for travis that was it. great job by rich to get out of that armbar...how the fudge he did it is beyond me?!?!? how do you turn your shoulder that way?!?!haha
...and the main event...the main event...never in my life have i experienced anything like that. it was beyond words. hugs and high fives all around. the place was insane, insane, INSANE!!!
i cannot wait to watch the PPV! i have a couple of the pre-lims so far and hope to have the rest later so i'll upload when i get a chance and send them around to anyone interested. leafs, ceg, releash first, though since we were there! tee hee sorry we didn't meet up leafs, but it sounds like you had an amazing time. we did too. i couldn't have asked for better company for this experience. i'll never forget it.
seriously... you wrote all this before re-watching it on PPV? jeebus. you've got a mind like a steel trap! i can barely remember who won each fight, let alone who their opponent was... it's all kinda blurry for some reason!
here's to a lil' bit of dana white calling releash "babe" : ), great chats over beer (i'm a LW!), falling up stairs, calling fighters by a name of an opponent they don't like, "she thinks your clinch game is boring!", many "good ideas", a wonderfully relaxing sunday, and to one fool making too many dana white sightings (me! haha)
40 hours on the train...WELL worth it for memories i will cherish forever.
omg, is that Dana White?
i don't know.... let's see what the spy camera says....
~~*~~ ...i surfaced and all of my being was enlightend... ~~*~~
so i feel the need to type to communicate a lil' bit. couldn't talk to the guy sitting next to me on the train home so he left like i had the plague and i had the double seat to myself...blessing in disguise, i guess. probably better for ceg and releash as they didn't have to put up with my "rambin' on" on sunday and we enjoyed a fairly quiet and relaxed day of crepes...those were so fuckin' good!...and touring the city (thanks again ceg for taking me to notre dame...gorgeous! next time we're going back with releash. )
yah, i'm bummed that ReleasH missed out on Old Montreal... :(
no, thank YOU for coming to Notre Dame with me... it's nice to have a willing participant in my art and architecture outings, for once!
mmmm... crepes.... *drools*
p.s. ramble on.
~~*~~ ...i surfaced and all of my being was enlightend... ~~*~~
+ one million! i should be able to talk soon (i hope!) so i'll give you a buzz to let you know how the train ride home was...matt hamill was there waiting for me! haha
...going to reply a bit more, then crash about as hard as we did friday and saturday while trying to start watching the ppv at least...
so many things happened...i momentarily forgot about the line...that was great work, releash!
hope your voice is getting better!! don't forget, red wine can do wonders... just ask E.V.!
yes, that ReleasH is a crafty one.... smart and beautiful... a deadly combination!
ps. matt hamill?
~~*~~ ...i surfaced and all of my being was enlightend... ~~*~~
sorry, onto #3
Just wanted to add that it's insane that you guys pretty much had dinner with hammill and gurgel. That is like a freakin dream, i am so envious of you 3.
Also, were you guys at HMV around 3 or 4 on friday? Henderson, Heurta, and if i remember correctly, florian were there doing pictures and signing. The line was way too long when we got there, so, peel pub it was, again lol. I swear that place is awsome, great food, great environment, good beer, and happy hour is from 3-7 with pitchers ranging between $6 for domestic beer and up to $12 for imports. We drank moosehead for $10/pitcher for 4 hours.
I just read the artical that civ posted, you were right, really good article and very good news!
At the post-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White comments on whether UFC will ever be back in Canada: "This is a hot bed for mixed martial arts now, obviously not only for the talent but just so many fans here... The energy here tonight was more powerful here than anywhere I've ever been. We did 21,390 people here - officially the biggest UFC event ever."
"I'd be back here every weekend, if we could."
hey leafs! sounds like you had a great time too!
that's so funny that you were at the Peel Pub. we were about to walk in there, but then decided on the Irish Pub next door instead (inspired by mookie's heritage, i suppose!) it was quite a suprise to see Matt and Jorge in there! We did see/hear about the Huerta signing at the HMV, which, of course, would have been awesome... but seriously, watching the fights on the big screen, and getting a personal play-by-play from Matt himself, and practically being able to offer him some of my french fries was a waaaayyy more special experience.... it really was cool.
glad you liked the blog as well! i though her somewhat 'girlie' outlook was cute, and i could relate to some of her descriptions.... that's how i feel watching with experts like mookie and releash sometimes!! hehehehe....
~~*~~ ...i surfaced and all of my being was enlightend... ~~*~~
Well, I finally have the energy to return to the thread! I made it home safely back to Nashville, after some delay. This weekend was amazing and exhausting and I am so lucky to have shared it with Ceg and Mookie. I'm sorry we couldn't meet up with you leafs.
It has pretty much all been said at this point. I can't wait to do it again. Perhaps in Toronto or if Dana can make it happen, in Nashville.
wow, the main event that was outstanding has disappeared completely with both shogun and chuck out now. irvin vs. rashad would definitely be interesting, but not main event material. i wonder how they'll handle that.
changes made to rumours. thanks, leafs.
ya the card still looks decent and they have moved Werdum/Vera up to headline, but i'm really hoping they can put together another fight on short notice. I agree completely that Irvin/Rashad is not even close to a main event fight. Silva/Okami would be nice, but i think i'm dreaming.
From what I have read Shogun/Liddel will be in September, so atleast we'll get that now.
I also found an interview with Kalib, he says that he had a broken foot after his first thrown kick. I think if he was able to run like he did, he surely could have taken the fight to the ground or tried something. I mean, I'd let somebody KO me for 10k lol http://www.thefightnetwork.com/news_detail.php?nid=6978

umm ya, I'd probably agree that get PBP from Matt and eating with them is a way more special time lol. I mean I skipped it to drink more, i'm becoming extremely envious of you guys lol
It's so insane that we were there at the same time. I love irish pubs (probably because of my heritage to lol), but a friend had told me to go to peel pub and although it was good, i think we made the wrong choice lol

sorry for the wait, lbc and everyone...a couple of the files didn't upload thanks to my "friendly" computer here. i would have had them all done last night...damn electronics!
anyway...pm's in a sec...:)
only the clementi vs. stout match left to upload...

ok, some final thoughts after watching the PPV...then i will settle down on the posts.
first, unlike many of the "reviews" i've seen elsewhere, i thought kenny florian did a fantastic job on the commentary. very descriptive commentary from someone who knows what he's talking about. very little bias, and great calls on the action. good chemistry with goldberg too. a very pleasant surprise.
i'm also up in the air still on what was the fight of the night. i'd almost be inclined to give it to mac and mark...but jonathan and hironaka did put on quite a show and jonathan did well to come back from a couple fo hard punches to win in emphatic fashion. loved it when he told the crowd that he could hear them chanting and that's what gave him the will to finish the fight. i say give them all bonuses! mac and mark put on one hell of a show.
we couldn't hear most of what was said in the post fight interviews (the PPV gave a good idea of how loud it was in there, especially for the main event, but didn't capture just how deafening it was at some points. "eeeeeee" is still all i can hear...;) the boos drowning out matt serra's interview at the weigh-ins was also not captured well. you literally couldn't hear a word of what goldberg was asking hi or what serra was saying in reply. all you could see was matt holding up the "two times" symbols.
there was some great comedy that i missed...i didn't get nate quarry's "rocky" line..."if i can change and you can change, we all can change!"...something like that. hilarious! kudos to him for trying to make that a good fight. if only kalib had made it a fight it would have been an excellent match up. i'm not buying his post fight comments, except his displeasure with the medical bills situation. i can understand the frustration, but choose a better time to make your "statement". a lot of canadian fans were really looking forward to seeing him put on a good show. i'm still perplexed...even after the "explanations".
...and i couldn't stop laughing during the match when goldberg mentions that it looked like quarry was just in a sparring session with kalib, and kenny says "well, nate is being kind of a jerk if this is a sparring session!" hahaha
is it wrong that i may watch this show every day for the next month?!?!...and look at our pics every hour or so?...
many thanks to ceg and releash for all the photos! i only took two good ones...and those were of you two!
oh, and as far as i can tell....i was trying to pinpoint the blow that took lutter out of the fight...it was the head kick in the second. he wasn't the same afterward. some errors in judgement on that night from steve mazz. i know he apologized to jason macdonald and joe doerksen after the show, as did jason to doerksen and his camp. he also should have recognized that lutter was done. he took some damage that could have been avoided. it's a difficult job to be a ref, but they could all take some lessons from big john and yves lavigne i think.
maia's comment about brazil not having a hockey team and that now he has one was a classic "win over the fans" moment...if his beautiful triangle didn't do it, i hope his post fight words did.
we were sitting there saying how great it would be to have someone use a PJ song as an entrance song (as some of the entrnce songs were a little different this time...stones, clash, etc.) so for those who didn't get to see the live show, just prior to the beginning of the PPV, they showed a fantastic highlight package on the big screens with baba o'riley playing as the tune! not the pj cover, but at least one we're all very familar with. it was awesome!

umm ya, I'd probably agree that get PBP from Matt and eating with them is a way more special time lol. I mean I skipped it to drink more, i'm becoming extremely envious of you guys lol
It's so insane that we were there at the same time. I love irish pubs (probably because of my heritage to lol), but a friend had told me to go to peel pub and although it was good, i think we made the wrong choice lol

sorry for the wait, lbc and everyone...a couple of the files didn't upload thanks to my "friendly" computer here. i would have had them all done last night...damn electronics!
anyway...pm's in a sec...:)
only the clementi vs. stout match left to upload...
don't make me look you in the eyes... i'm wearing a bikini, bro!
oh well... another win for Team Forrest/Maynard!
i just woke up with 20 mins remaining in the show! damn! i'll have to record it on sportsnet at 3...sounds like it was another entertaining episode.
i guess so! i thought you and releash had a "good idea" to get out of the crowd quickly...at least our crowd didn't get this out of hand, eh?
poor ol' montreal. :(
next time! i'm still in awe of the beauty we saw there...almost enough to bring one to tears...shh...don't tell anyone it brought me to tears...haha
...indeed...crepes...mmm...:D
it's almost back...
...just kidding about matt hamill. he was hanging out with us so much i was still expecting him to pop up and greet me on the train!
red wine, eh...?..hmmm...that's a "good idea"....
"babe, i would love to come to nashville!"
first, unlike many of the "reviews" i've seen elsewhere, i thought kenny florian did a fantastic job on the commentary. very descriptive commentary from someone who knows what he's talking about. very little bias, and great calls on the action. good chemistry with goldberg too. a very pleasant surprise.
i'm also up in the air still on what was the fight of the night. i'd almost be inclined to give it to mac and mark...but jonathan and hironaka did put on quite a show and jonathan did well to come back from a couple fo hard punches to win in emphatic fashion. loved it when he told the crowd that he could hear them chanting and that's what gave him the will to finish the fight. i say give them all bonuses! mac and mark put on one hell of a show.
we couldn't hear most of what was said in the post fight interviews (the PPV gave a good idea of how loud it was in there, especially for the main event, but didn't capture just how deafening it was at some points. "eeeeeee" is still all i can hear...;) the boos drowning out matt serra's interview at the weigh-ins was also not captured well. you literally couldn't hear a word of what goldberg was asking hi or what serra was saying in reply. all you could see was matt holding up the "two times" symbols.
there was some great comedy that i missed...i didn't get nate quarry's "rocky" line..."if i can change and you can change, we all can change!"...something like that. hilarious! kudos to him for trying to make that a good fight. if only kalib had made it a fight it would have been an excellent match up. i'm not buying his post fight comments, except his displeasure with the medical bills situation. i can understand the frustration, but choose a better time to make your "statement". a lot of canadian fans were really looking forward to seeing him put on a good show. i'm still perplexed...even after the "explanations".
...and i couldn't stop laughing during the match when goldberg mentions that it looked like quarry was just in a sparring session with kalib, and kenny says "well, nate is being kind of a jerk if this is a sparring session!" hahaha
is it wrong that i may watch this show every day for the next month?!?!...and look at our pics every hour or so?...
many thanks to ceg and releash for all the photos! i only took two good ones...and those were of you two!
oh, and as far as i can tell....i was trying to pinpoint the blow that took lutter out of the fight...it was the head kick in the second. he wasn't the same afterward. some errors in judgement on that night from steve mazz. i know he apologized to jason macdonald and joe doerksen after the show, as did jason to doerksen and his camp. he also should have recognized that lutter was done. he took some damage that could have been avoided. it's a difficult job to be a ref, but they could all take some lessons from big john and yves lavigne i think.
maia's comment about brazil not having a hockey team and that now he has one was a classic "win over the fans" moment...if his beautiful triangle didn't do it, i hope his post fight words did.
maia!
we were sitting there saying how great it would be to have someone use a PJ song as an entrance song (as some of the entrnce songs were a little different this time...stones, clash, etc.) so for those who didn't get to see the live show, just prior to the beginning of the PPV, they showed a fantastic highlight package on the big screens with baba o'riley playing as the tune! not the pj cover, but at least one we're all very familar with. it was awesome!
