  • I think it's after 40 that women start having problems with carrying children. (I could be wrong though).

What does good health care have to do with it?

Why? What does being able to afford good healthcare come into play? Not trying to be difficult or anything, but if you are healthy at 40, there is no problem having a kid. Is it then OK being 25 but not in great health and having a kid if you don't have good healthcare?

I mean, I just figure it's game over at 35 unless you can afford really good health care. That number is like doomsday.

um, everyone who's having a kid should have really good health care.

there's no "doomsday number." Obviously it is different for every individual. some people pop out kids perfectly fine when they're 40. Other people are at high risk at 35.

My mother gave birth to me when she was 41 and I cant honestly answer that question. I think I may be retarded, but nobody wants to tell me.

after 30 you get tested for Downs and other such bad stuff..

health care means a lot more in the US than here Kelis.. we get it free here.. but in the US you have to pay for it?!??

usually yes you have to pay for health care (insurance or out of pocket), but there are many nuances. I think for any pregnant woman there is adequate care provided for by some means. Plenty of low income women who may not have insurance receive prenatal care.

Fair enough on the second point. (F*n weird country) :) but I was tested for all kinds of things when I was pregnant. (Including a risk of down syndrome).

What kind of weird country do you Americans live in??? These thing should be free in AMERICA!!!

    (Okay. You're right, dunkman).

all my children were born within the public health system here in australia and though i may be biased they are all fabulous. i walked out of the hospital with treasure and paid not a cent for it.

the truth is it's not really "free" anywhere. under any system trade offs are made. in canada for example people often have to wait for extensive periods to receive "free" care and often people such as the elderly are made to wait longer or are denied in favor of someone else.

Did you have a boy or girl? How old were you when pregnant. Please don't tell your kid I kicked the buttpoo out of you. :)

I was 26. I didn't have to wait for anything.

I did read today though, that my town has one of the best maternity care systems in England.

in scotland all maternity care, both pre and post natal, is free

The odds of having a baby with genetic/chromosomal defects increases the older the mother is. 35+ plus becomes the at-risk age for these defects. For instance, the odds of having Down syndrome [approximately]:

    - 1 in a 1200 at age 20
    - 1 in 700 at 30
    - 1 in 300 at 35
    - 1 in 100 at 40
    - 1 in 30 at 45

Also, the older you are, the more likely there are to be problems during the pregnancy, including a higher risk of miscarriage and stillbirth, and the higher the likelihood of requiring a c-section.
No time to be void or save up on life. You got to spend it all.

its free here.. i.e. a 17 year old girl ho has never worked will get the same cara nd attention a s a 31 year old solicitor..

its 'free' in as much as its paid for by our taxes.. but its genius lies in the fact that its not exclusive to just those whocan afford it... the US has an unbelievably high death toll due to people who simply couldnt afford care.. meanwhile your govt has spent 60 trillion dollars on a war no-one gives a fuck about.

Seriously, if you can get pregnant and sustain a pregnancy and have the will and desire to do so then go for it I say, and I don't care if you're 50 or 15.
