taking it a step further in our cultural climate, i DO agree, female infidelity is on the rise....not to do with anything bioligocal, and i'd guess everything to do with independence, having emotional and physical needs unmet, etc. so yes.....with a more level playing field, most of us like to fuck for fuck's sake if/when we can, depending on our own personal moral code, needs, desires, etc. so still...CHOICE.
I balme the internet and the proliferation of sex based content. Seriously.
I balme the internet and the proliferation of sex based content. Seriously.
i think women's rising infidelity rates correlate with rising divorce rates, rises in earning power, and the general state within our culture the *acceptance* of more choices for men and women, and all that encompasses. the internet and/or proliferation of sex-based content i am sure may play a role...but i'd not it at THe forefront personally. i think men AND women are growing and changing within their 'gender roles'...more is skewed/shared/up-in-the-air...and while overall i think it's a GOOD thing, i think we are trodding through cultural gender-based 'growing pains' as it were. seriously.
I get what you're arguing, but I just don't buy it. I spent 4 years in college trying to hook up every drunken weekend and never could.
What was your process? Did you have a convo, maybe lay it on a little thick on purpose? Or did you stumble over with a Natty Light can in your hand and ask, "Which one of you lucky bastards are gonna take this home?", then proceed to fall backwards over a table and pass out?
Wait. Both ways seem to be a winner. I'm no help. Sorry
are you kidding me? if this is case why are women spending so much time/effort/money on having the perfect body, shaving their legs, getting rid of zits, getting rid of wrinkles, wearing slutty clothes, trying to be taller, trying to be shorter, whitening teeth, trying to be cleaner, shaving their armpits, going on diets, getting liposuction, getting boob jobs, wearing girdles...and then we're STILL not good enough to sleep with?
of all those i am guilty of two...guess which two?

Like a lot of people have already said, it's just a stereotype that men are cheaters and women are not. It has nothing to do with the sex, but the individual and their paticular set of morals and ethics. Granted, it may be considered more accepted that men cheat, and there are some men who use this to their advantage, but they are most likely going to cheat regardless of what anyone else thinks anway.
As for this thing about it being "more involuntary" for men...what a complete and utter steaming pile of BS. If you lack self control, don't blame it on the fact that you're a man, blame it on yourself as an idividual. It's really not that difficult not to have sex with someone...you just...don't! It really IS that simple. Personally, I find that to be a very poor excuse. "Oh, I couldn't help myself!" If that really is the case...what is wrong with you? I don't think men need it anymore than women...they just think they do, because society tells them they do. If you want to go around having sex with everything in sight...feel free, but don't blame it on the fact you're a man. Take some responsibility for your actions and admit it's down to who YOU are, instead of playing the "i'm a man" card. Why should the rest of the male sex be persecuted because a few can't keep it in their pants?

Gaaahh... I wasn't blaming an involuntary response on cheating or using it as an excuse. It's bad to cheat whether you're a man or a woman. Personally, I've never cheated, though I've had the opportunity. I've also been cheated ON. It's bad news regardless of who does it.
The "oh I couldn't help myself" excuse is bs for sure. HOWEVER, how can you possibly deny that a man's sexual appetite is different from a woman's? This is reflected everywhere in nature as Get_Right even pointed out. Like I said, everyone posting in this thread should go out tonight and see how many people would be willing to have sex with you. I GUARANTEE you the girls would get 10 times more guys willing. Or look at porn. Look at who gets addicted to that garbage more often. Look at who the industry is geared to. And using ONLY societal norms to explain all this would be wrong, just as using involuntary elements as an excuse for cheating would be wrong.
Millions of years of evolution still haven't completely driven us from certain instincts: those being the nature of reception in females and the nature of penetration in males...the instinct of females to choose only the best mates, and the instinct of males to simply MATE MATE MATE. They can be (and SHOULD be) controlled, but to deny them and say they don't play a role in cheating is silly.
But maybe you're the smart one, I dunno. My thinking on this certainly doesn't score me lots of dates, that's for sure :P
I dunno I still don't buy it. men are repulsed by women's appearances pretty easily.
Ya serious?
Lol, I'm lovin the discussion between you and in_hiding though... both complete extreme ends of the spectrum. You're possibly the reason some women hate feminists, you'd like to believe that a world without sex and gender could exist. In_hiding on the other hand is a feminists nightmare... the poor men, all they want is sex and women should know that... but instead we go around taunting the poor fuckers by merely existing . Therefore we are to blame for everything

so then, why do women cheat? what *reasons* would we have if we don't have that evolutionary pull?
point is, MANY animals in nature have males that wander...and others that don't. same as females. females out in nature choose the 'best mate' they can find/get...but that could be different every mating cycle. point is, using that as a rationale at all for cheating is just...ridiculous really. if a man wants to roam, go and roam! just don't choose a commited AND monogamous relationship and then cry 'biology' as a reason for roaming off the farm. it may be A factor, but especially nowadays, to use it at ALL as any part of a 'rationale' for cheating is daft at best, and insulting at worst. hahaha.
I like how when a woman cheats it's the man's fault
whoever said that?
whenever ANYone cheats, it's their own *fault*...because it's their own choice, and their responsibility. that said, there may be reasons behind the cheating that may push the cheater to do so, but bottomline...it's still their CHOICE to cheat or not. period. everyone is responsible for their own behavior, plain and simple.

Read what I've written, seriously. If you can't think in any other terms than absolute ones, then there's no point in talking about things like this.
This kind of topic really isn't suited for a discussion in a place like this. People try to make it seem resolvable and it really isn't. It just exists.

seems like I have heard it very often.
Man works too much,etc... not giving her enough attention so she seeks it somewhere else
If a man speaks in a forest and there is no woman around to hear him, is he still wrong?
Man works too much,etc... not giving her enough attention so she seeks it somewhere else
i don't consider that laying blame...more like *excuses* for their behavior. and they may well hold true. however, i don't think most - certainly can't say all...but most....DO realize it's their choice. everyone has a *reason* for cheating, even if it's as simple as wanting someone new. i think both men and women make *excuses* for their choices, i mean for most...there ARE reasons i would think, that's all. however, i don't see that as blame.
Saturnal....i've read everything you've posted, and completely understand. i DO *get* what you're saying, and i fully comprehend the whole 'evolutionary' part, and while i don't completely discount it...i personally think to even remotely tie it into even a small reason for men cheating is a cop-out. i do NOT think in absoultes, quite the contrary really.....but i just don't see that as ANY reason for it. sure, maybe THINK about it more b/c of that, sure...but to ACT on it is still all CHOICE. so for me personally, i don't see it as even worthy of being considered in the discussion of cheating, and it's merely my opinion, that's all. i don't mind if you or anyone else disagree.

while i don't think it's *resolvable* on a grand scale, i DO still find it a fascinating topic to discuss, anywhere. anything about human behavior is interesting discussion imo. that said, your last point IS *it*....absolutely. it is what it is, will always happen....b/c we're human and imperfect...male and female alike.

I guess the way I feel about discussions like this is that just about ANYTHING a person might say about it is untrue! Some people manage to be faithful through the flowing waters of a relationship, some people don't. Some people don't even have that goal. Some do. People may be more or less successful over a lifetime.
What might be true for one couple or one person in one period of time might become untrue in another period. What might be true for one culture might be totally untrue for another. Any statement can be disproved with an example!
To me, it's just an enormous can of wigglin' worms!!!!

however, i guess it depends what you hope to get out of the discussion/exchange. i am not interested in 'answers' or absolutes...it's the actual discussion of the topic, or any such related/human nature/choice questions...that truly interests me. i love to discuss the thought process, the whys and hows of it. it simply interests ME to read/discuss what others may think on a topic. sometimes i'm baffled and othertimes informed....and everything in between, and that's fascinating!
