for making a joke!

"Charlie's in the trees!!!" she yelled and fell on her stomach while there was a helicopter flying SUPER low overhead.

she was on break, and she joked that it was giving her a " 'Nam flashback" and then yelled "Charlie's in the TREES!!!" and took a spill...and THIS got her expelled.

seriously. I am pissed...I mean, what the HELL??? am I just incredibly insensitive, or is this over reacting???

I told her that if anything she should be given some type of gold star for takin' the joke to the zenith...I mean, tear in my eye proud over the idea that she would go balls out for a joke...

this isn't suspension...this is EXPULSION.

oh, btw she has Uncles and 2nd cousins that were IN 'Nam, and they have always USED this joke...in addition to other family members using it...

Um what the heck kind of joke is that? It's extremely racist. How old is she? I dunno if the punishment is appropriate but what she said is really out of line IMO.

I think thats pretty extreme. I can see it being possibly offensive, I dont see the racism in it though. I personally would have laughed. People are too clean today, everything is offensive. The only punishment she should have gotten if any would be suspension. If any.

    Racist?

um...in Viet Nam, the US soldiers called the "Viet Cong" (that would be the enemy at the time) "Charlies" because using the call system alphabet C = "Charlie" just like A = "Alpha"

now you see the low flying helicopter reminded her in a joking flashback of 'Nam...which is funny since she is WAY to young to have 'Nam flashbacks.

I am often called insensitive, but never racist...so I am curious what is Racist here...oh, and i am not trying to pick a fight or anything, I really am curious.

she is 15 and YEAH kicked out of school...oh and by the way the reasoning was that it was an "insensitive remark towards our servicemen and women, many of whom have had to carry the mental scars of battle with them. Also, because she was "carousing" on the grass field...

I had no idea carousing is outlawed in High School...

There is nothing in that joke that was racist whatsoever.

Stupid? Maybe. Racist? No. Deserving of expulsion? Fuck no. Maybe a slap on the wrist and nothing more.

were there any nam vets around? didn't think so maybe instead of summarily kicking her out of school, perhaps the school could TEACH her what she did wrong.....oh wait that would be the rational, intelligent thing to do.....

    is this a public school?

yeah, I can understand a detention or something for maybe the carousing part...I was just curious if i am like a total asshat about this...and it is really something expulsion worthy.

it's may - she has until JUNE 19 before school is out...I think this is just ridiculous! she has no previous disciplinary issues.

I guess they are saying it has something to do with "zero tolerance" for "bullying"

which makes me wonder where all the 'Nam veterans are in her sophomore class.

    bullying?!!

That's ridiculous. What kind of high school does she go to? (I'm guessing not public) I graduated from high school 2 years ago, and granted my high school wasn't the greatest, but it also wasn't bad, and people got away with much worse than this on a daily basis. One of my classmates knocked out one of the vice principals and only got suspended for 2 weeks (probably because the VP had it coming, though). Anyways, yeah that's laughable, if she had done that at my school she maybe, maaaayyybeeee would've gotten a detention or two, but probably would have been ignored by administrators or told to get up and stop messing around.

On the bright side, the kid has learned a thing or two about the history of the Vietnam war.

What do you do when you get expelled? Surely the government would force them to get another school eh?

A bright side could be, at least she wont have her mind dulled by classes.

  • As if the joke wasn't funny enough in itself, the fact that it's a 15 year old girl having Nam flashbacks just makes it the most perfect thing I've read on the boards in a while. :D It really sucks that she got expelled, but take comfort in the fact: that kind of wit can't be taught in school. :)

I have never heard of such severe punishment.

oh and JOE^3 - my niece wrote a report on the Viet Nam war like 2 weeks ago...how is that for irony.

expulsion for referencing a war? I guess if she said "nigger" they'd stone her to death or something.

really, that's ridiculous. at the MOST, a teacher or principal should have told her simply not to make statements like that....even though there's nothing wrong with the statement she made. but if they don't want stuff like that, they surely can tell her to stop. but to expel her? there has to be more to it than just the "Charlie in the trees" line

Yeah, that's fuckin ridiculous! No way on earth does that warrant expulsion. It's not like she caused physical harm to anyone or anything. Must be a right bunch of clowns running that school. Take it to the courts!!!

Glad to know this was a public school. Now who reported this or how did this come to light to the administration? Private school I can understand this punishment but public is a whole other story.

There has to be a system of appeal or maybe they did since she at the end of the school year. Wait a minute does this include next year also?

    Need more info here.

I think this is a good idea.

The fact that she has relatives who are veterans and make this joke should be brought up. She had hoped to make people laugh. It sounds like she wasn't trying to be hurtful.

I am surprised that the joke of a fifteen year old girl wouldn't be forgiven in a case like this.

so far the only other thing that ANYONE (teacher/counselor & friends/Student witnesses) have said was that once on the ground she did a "commando style" crawl and said "get down!! get down!!!" and then yelled "Tex! NOOOOOO (fade out style yell) I told you to get down Sold-IER! NOOOO!! WHYYYYYYY!"

I found all of that fucking HILARIOUS when I heard, but - I didn't think it was all that pertinent to my thread question...

the teacher told me (I was at the school to meet with them about this) that she didn't feel the punishment is fitting the 'crime" but that was OFF record...and she is blaming the "zero tolerance" policy.

the Counselor is kinda pissy because aparently I do NOT take my niece's actions "seriously enough"

oh...one last thing, my niece, and the teacher both have said that when the Counselor "marched" her to his office, she made a comment about "gi Joe and a king fu grip"

my niece can't remember what she said, and the Teacher didn't hear it very clearly.

but that is all of the story as I know it...5 students (2 are friends) 1 teacher, 1 teacher assistant, and the counselor...all have agreed upon that version.

You've gotta be effing kidding me? You've got one hell of a niece, sounds like a great funny person. That cracked me up, but again, you've gotta be effing kidding me?! Expulsion? F that.

I could understand it if it were Mater Dei, Servite, Rosary, or some other private school of that nature, but not public. Hell, even in those private schools I'd be surprised if it came to expulsion for that.
  • failedpersephonefailedpersephone Posts: 3,424
oh the expulsion is for the rest of this year...but that means that she will not be able to take the placement tests for next year's AP classes...she is in the classes this year, and had hoped to be in them next year as well.

she has NEVER had even a DETENTION...I mean, this kid is NOT an attention seeking kid or even a problem kid.

and there will be a meeting to see if the expulsion should continue on to next school year.

I am going to talk to the school board and the Superintendent over this one...I was just trying to gauge the reaction here so that i know if I was just being douchy about this.

I am going to be hearing about it from her parents when they get home...she has been staying with me for the past 2 weeks (and is supposed to stay here for an additional 4 more weeks) while her parents are out of the country...
so OF COURSE something like this happens under my watch.

    CRAP.

I am so tired of all you sue happy dickheads. The school districts are so strapped for cash and you want to sue. With high gas prices, the schools are getting things left and right. Here's a solution, raise your kids right and don't allow them to act like idiots.
