Helen, not sure if you will read this because its 7 pages in, but I have a funny story about meeting the boyfriends parents for the first time (well he's my husband now)
So, I am from Philadelphia and my husband is from Michigan, and he moved to the Philly area in 2004 to take a job and an Architect. So we met out there, and stuff. So we started dating the very end of April 2005 and he was going home for the July 4th week to see his parents, and he invited me out there. And we were still a new couple at the time so I was super excited. So we booked a flight to fly to Michigan.
Fast forward to us at the airport leaving to go visit them. So our flight gets canceled. Sucks! So we are like, okay lets get a new flight.. NOPE no more flights for 3 days, because there was a huge concert event in Philadelphia that weekend, some festival and everything was booked solid across the board, so we're like shit, what to do... so we are like, okay, we're gonna have to drive it. (14 hours) so we're like all ready to drive it, and we go to get our suitcases back from the airline to leave, and no bags! They couldn't find them. So we end up spending 10 hours at the Philadelphia airport trying to have our bags located. 10 hours into the day, they locate our bags. They were spotted being loaded onto a flight to Detroit Michigan! So our bags went to Michigan without us. We had to start driving because it was getting late. So we only got 3 hours into the drive before we were exhusted. We pulled over to a hotel and everything was totally filled and so we had to sleep in the car. Mind you, it was the smallest Audi ever. And we had no suitcase, no clothes nothing! So I couldn't sleep and I begged him to sleep just enough to drive a little more to find a hotel. So we finally did. We found a shitty place to sleep, slept in our clothes, couldn't brush our teeth or shower or anything. Got up completely tired, dirty, and just nasty, and drive 11 more hours. We had to stop in Detroit and track down our bags and then we FINALLY got to his parents house. I was SO embarrassed because I looked worse then I have ever looked before. It was truly the trip from hell (well atleast the beginning)
Moral of the story: It's got to be better than that!!!

haha! Nope, but they told us we could sleep in the airport over night if we needed to. Jerks!
We had to FIGHT them over getting our money back. They said they'd just give us a ticket in the future. We told them we would rather shoot ourselves then fly with them again. We got our money back, but it wasn't easy.

The only airline I've ever had luck with is US Airways, and that is because I have flown probably 200 segments with them over the past 3 years. They bend over for me, but other airlines don't even have the common courtesy of using lube when they have cancellations, lose my shit, etc. I've started driving for business trips that are less than 8 hours because I'll probably make it there faster anyway.

And back to meeting the parents, I think I decided a long time ago that an orphan is my kinda guy.

Hiya Jeanie!
John Rzeznik is an orphan :( both his parents died before he was 16. That's really sad. To me it makes his success even more inspirational.
that was kind of random...
but actually, to get Freudian-my ex's mother was exactly like me. It was scary. She even laughed like I did.
I also met another friend of mine's parents and he had told his mom all about me and I remember going 'gee, that's weird, I wonder why he did that.' I do well with parents though
I was talking to his dad about the Mets or whatever. It worked out well .

But because it is about helen and her oh so loverly BF, we turn it into a joke!
you should know that i was there when this loverly couple met!, and that the following night, HH's BF ran naked through a muddy norwegian field, on a cold norwegian late october night!
I am sure she will keep that story quiet when she meets the parents

Yeah, actually I don't really wish that on anyone Allie, but I can think of a couple of instances meeting and getting to know the parents of a fella only to wish I'd never laid eyes on them. But then haha, as it turned out I also came to wish the same about the fella! Who'd have guessed hey?
Conversely my ex fiance's parents and family I actually miss more than I miss him. They were wonderful people and it was a shame he wasn't more like them!
Personally I think Helen will be fine and that meeting the parents will be a little nerve wracking but ultimately a roaring success.

You're lucky to have been there soup! It sounds like it was a fun time for all and wonderful that such a great couple came together. Someone prepared to run naked through a muddy norwegian field sounds perfect for our Hels.

I'm sorry Jeanie :(
but I think it wouldn't be normal if someone wasn't a little nervous about meeting the parents b/c you want to make a good impression.
But I'm sure it will be just fine,

Oh no!! I'm kidding! I mean sure, some things were a little embarrassing or hurt like hell at the time but it's all a learning curve hey? Makes me who I am. And I sure am not nearly as nervous about meeting parents anymore. A little of course, we all are, but not nearly as bad as I was when I was younger. I guess my point is, you get through it and you live and learn.
Hopefully Helen will be able to look back fondly, with great memories of this time in her life. I'm sure that's what will happen and years from now she'll be sitting down with her mother in law having a good giggle about this very weekend.
awww... I was so nervous meeting my fella's parents, but there was no need to. They're lovely people, especially his Da cos he reminds me of my Da and his Ma makes a fine cup of tea
Don't worry, yer a nice person, I'm suuuure they'll like ye
Helen, the man had a pistol, tazer and baton. It was all I could do not to run in terror. : p
That said, I'm sure it can always be worse... but thinking that way is just gonna put you on edge going in there. Just do that thing they tell you to do when you're speaking in public: imagine your boyfriend's parents in their underwear. : p
Yeh... but see... he didn't use it on you, did he? At least he didn't use the pistol, tazer or baton . It's probably not so bad for me cos at least I'm not trying to take their little girl away from them
But that's fantastic advice... I'll do that thanks
