Recommend a Movie

brainofPJ suggested this in the underrated movies thread. So here we guy.

The idea is to recommend some of your favourite movies, (like the recommend a band thread in Other music) preferably lesser known movies, so everyone can go watch them and broaden their horizons :) Doesn't matter what genre it falls under, if it's foreign or whatever. Anything goes
So no Pulp Fictions, Raging Bulls, or any other giant movies that everyone already knows.

brainofPJ already recommended Salton Sea to me, which I never heard of, so I'm downloading it now.

I'll start off with District 13. It's an awesome French action movie from Luc Besson. A cop is sent into a closed off area in Paris which is overrun with criminals to stop a nuke from going off. Similar premise to Escape from New York, Very silly, but it's great fun and the action is amazing. Loads of Parkour all the way through, and some cool martial arts and stuff. Well worth watching.

Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others) by Florian Henckel Von Donnersmarck. Won the Oscar for best foreign film and won more German Film Awards than any other film in history but it's not exactly a household name so I think it's suitable for here. Excellent about the final years of the cold war and follows a spy for the Stasi who is assigned to spy on a playwright suspected of subversive behaviour. It's very thought-provoking.

Also on the subject of german films, I recommend Werner Herzog's entire works but specifically Aguirre: Der Zorn Gottes (The Wrath of God), Fitzcarraldo, Jeder fur Sich und Gott gegen Alle (english title is The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser but the german translates as "Every man for himself and God against all") and Stroszek.

Finally I'd like to recommend Vincent Gallo's Buffalo 66, a remarkably touching film considering what a bastard the man is in real life :) It's amazing how much one can find themself empathising with a character who kidnaps a girl and makes her pose as his wife to pretend to his parents that his life is going well.

the korean film Oldboy was immense... i also thought The Black Book was fantastic.. Black Book is dutch i think... ergo it has some baps in it for those who cant stand a film with subtitles
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

    Run Lola Run
    Princess and the Warrior

Loved those two...Buffalo 66 was a great flick and yes he is a prick in real life, what a weirdo.

I really like this film from the late 80's called "Hope and Glory". It is a really good movie about WWII from the perspective of a little boy in England. It is really actually kind of funny the way its done, and not overly sappy or sad at all considering the time.

It is one of my all-time favorite movies. You can read more about it on imdb.com .

Sunshine was one of my favourite movies of the last year. Absolutely brilliant.

for those that watched sunshine - was that dude alive at the end? ... he looked a bit like a computer program in some scenes ... trying to ask in a non-spoiler kind of way ...

as for this thread ... some great recommendations - seen most of them ... here are some of mine:

    recent movies:
Persepolis (the book works much better but it's creativity makes up for it)
U2 3D - best concert film i've seen (the juxtapositioning of politically charged songs with images was a nice surprise)

    older movies:
Baraka (visual piece similar to koyanasqatsi - sp?)
My Name Is Nobody (for thsoe that like westerns)

    They are both excellent movies.

Try 'Kenny' hilarious film from Australia. A mock documentary about someone who cleans and maintains portable toilets.
'Oldboy' Superb Korean revenge drama that is highly rated.
'Ichi the killer' very violent, very funny, very unique (japan i think)

Everyone needs to see The Seventh Seal, and Persona and Wild Strawberries.

My two favourite films ever. I think AHX takes the title. Just. Norton is incredible.

I actually watched that a couple of weeks ago on VHS, the video store I rent from has a lot of foreign films. It was hard to follow, but a lot of Godard's movies need to be viewed more than once. I'll probably see it again when Criterion releases it on DVD next month.

And The Vanishing (the original) rocks.

    Twin Town.
An early Rhys Ifans role, very funny, very dark.
p.s. I shit on Fight club :p. Seriously, that Ed Norton is wooden, in the extreme. Pitt is under rated as an actor though, in Meet Joe Black he is simply excellent.

He's supposed to be, that's his character. He's uptight. have you seen American History X? Nothing wooden about that performance.
