:o Norton is the only actor who could make me sympathise with a neo-nazi.
I thought the scene over the dinner table where he rants at his mothers jewish suitor was powerful, other than that, I didn´t think it was anything that special.
Anybody seen The Firm or I.D. ??

think there may have been some artistic license used in that film y´know. It never depicted the poverty of the age to it´s true extent.

    Trees Lounge.
    Dead Man.
    Nine Queens(Nueve Reinas).
    Five Easy Pieces.

I have to disagree with you. That's a great scene but, for me (and I'm a Norton fanboy so I'm biased :p) I think the most powerful moments in that film are the ones in which he says nothing. After he curbstomps the guy and the police arrest him, I find the moment where he slowly turns to the camera with his hands behind his head with the triumphant smile on his face absolutely chilling. Likewise, this scene, with the symbolism in the mirror, completely makes the film for me.

I think the film could've been very different in the hands of a lesser actor. There are moments that are pretty dodgy, two many slow-motions shots etc but Norton carries it in my opinion.

Lots of great movies have been mentioned here, but I cant believe nobody mentioned any Almodovar movie, I love Almodovar and I could recommend:
Carne Trémula -> aka Live Flesh (USA) Brilliant!
Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios -> aka Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (USA) classic!
Hable con ella -> aka Talk to Her (International: English title)
I could go on with spanish movies... Bigas Luna is an interesting director and also Alex De la Iglesia is (La Comunidad is very good, aka Common Wealth (UK) and I strongly recommend it! :))
I like Kusturica too and from him I would recommend Underground, it is crazy brilliant!
ohhh I could go on and on... I love movies!! don't worry I'll stop now! :o

Last one: Bananas, Woody Allen's masterpiece!!

    EDIT:

He's one of my favourites too, not a huge film buff but I remember the Spike Lee film and Sleepers, in the former I certainly could imagine it falling down a little without him.

Very confusing I found this! Or perhaps Paz Vega was the cause of my loss of concentration, fine, fine lady!!

Y'know there has been a hollywood remake of Nine Queens, looks like they slaughtered it from the clip I saw.
  • if not mentioned- Gross Pointe Blank

    great lil movie

No idea. Totally pointless remake, they must have had to rewrite the ending slightly I guess.

    Requiem for a Dream

hey i've seen this movie! but not from the beginning, i started watching it when it was half way through.
pretty shocking, it made me sad. seeing someone's self-destruction is something i would only wish to my enemy.

what happened to that old lady was awful, but it sure had some good visuals.

I was really disappointed with Requiem for a Dream. It was good, no doubt, I just thought it was going to be incredible. I'd been recommended it several times and told it was better than The Basketball Diaries. It's not in my opinion. The story was excellent but I didn't like the visual style much and the direction was a bit dodgy. Maybe I just don't get Darren Aronofsky. Jared Leto was fantastic in it though. He should stick to acting. That band of his are horrible.

No, never seen them. Fight Club got turned off after an hour, on account of it being totally wanky, preposterous, pompous, pointless, badly acted, badly written, corny, cliched, ridiculous bullshit. But apparently it's a lot of peoples favourite film !!!!!!!!
I once saw him in this stupid film where he was a priest, that was shit also, so I've never bothered since.
Nic Cage, is also a joke...over acting anyone?
Jamie, I agree with you about fight club... and keeping the faith... the latter was shite, the former was watchable but that's about it.

BUT you really have to see American history X... nothing pretentious about it, just a great story BRILLIANTLY acted. Possibly one of the most shocking and disturbing films I've EVER seen. Please just watch this ONE!
    The Astoria??? Orgazmic!
    Verona??? it's all surmountable

ah, I'd totally forgotten about this one, DiCaprio played it well, also one of Mark Wahlberg earlier performances. Michael Imperioli who always seems to play characters who lose themselves through drugs has a minor-ish part as the guy who remains on the wrong track and tempts Leo near the end. Lorraine Bracco plays the mother also, reckon if I saw it now I'd recognize many more.

    1. Pi (3,14...), another Daren Aronofsky (Requiem for a dream) movie. A little black and white flick. Pretty good one, with a little Terry Gilliam thing going on there.

    2. Also I'd highly recommend Adam's Apple. A movie from Denmark. Very funny, cinical and dark.

    Here's a little clip from this one : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHtkDSKSU1s

    3. The Thin Red Line by Terence Malick which some may find a bit too philosophical, but basically, one of the best war movie ever.

    4. In the Mouth of Madness by John Carpenter with Sam Neil;pretty weird

    5. I recently (two days ago) watched the Constant Gardner and I have to say it moved me.

maybe you expected too much? it's better to go and watch/do something not knowing it at all. let's just settle on the fact that you don't understand Darren ;) because i loved it because of its visual, and acting was brilliant. i can't remember much about her son....well i just remember feeling for him when he had to lie to his mother and pretend to be something he is far from being....it made me slightly uncomfortable. And his poor mother she looked like a proper addict....it was amazing to see her life get from bad to worse and the latter stage of her life looked like depiction of hell. i wasn't told by anyone about this movie i was randomly watching tv, changing channels until i came up to this movie...first few minutes it was just like anyother drug movie...but then i really got sucked into it.

as for Backetball Diaries, i know you know that i was a Leo fan, and yes because of that i watched a bit of that movie, though i can't remember now whether i watched it till the end and just don't remember what the hell went on in there or switched to watching something else :o

I think I did expect too much :) I normally like films like that and I heard it was brilliant and just felt a tad let down. The mother annoyed me a bit too :o Marlon Wayans was great in it though.

As for The Basketball Diaries, you need to watch it again and pay attention :) It's brilliant. Di Caprio is amazing in it, though as I've told you before, I actually like his acting :D
