well if that's it for the Oilers late season push, I must admit it was a hell of a run

I'd take the Oilers team over the Leafs right now in a heartbeat

Garon has been a huge surprise

liked Cogliano for the Canadian junior team and it looks like he's going to be a huge asset for the Oilers

This made me lol....you crack me up

Man, imagine if they squeak in on this roll? Remember the last time they did that? My liver does.

Sadly, I don't think any of our injured vets will be available even if we made it in and went a couple rounds...still, I'm getting the impression that those young'uns are too confident to realize they're not supposed to be winning at this level yet. The only thing I'm NOT liking about the Oil right now, is that they aren't protecting leads...they are letting the other team back into EVERY game they get up in. Makes for exciting hockey anyway.
your liver and mine. If the playoffs are in the stars, my liver is going to hate me.

Cant wait to see Ed tomorrow in Vancouver

Man, that building was on fire tonight! A valiant effort by the boys this last month....they went down fighting that's for sure!!! Have to say that Curtis Glencross could easily become my favorite Oiler!!! Can't wait to see him and the rest of the boys in action next season!!!
And I can't wait to enjoy the season with my fellow Oiler fans on here....next year, we will have an Oiler game meet up!!!!!!

Nice job knocking out Vancouver last night.....SHAWEET!
However, I was in a bit of a conundrum. I hate the flames more than Vancouver (its almost an equal hatred). And if we would have lost to Vancouver then the flames would not have secured their playoff spot.

    Whatcha gonna do?

Well I have avoided this particular thread for awhile now simply due to the fact everytime I post the Oilers lay a big egg, but with the season over I need to get out my thoughts on the past season and my projections moving forward.

After watching last night, although technically a meaningless game for us (minus the fact the higher we finish lower the draft pick of one Brian Burke), I was so inspired in what I saw. Our boys had nothing to play for, the Canucks had their play-off lives on the line, and we looked like the team that had the immediate future on the line.

We showed immense adversity time after time killing penalties, hitting, skating hard, shot-blocking, and I need to give props. to Jarret Stoll for taking a slapper to the head and coming back, playing with heart and to get the eventual game winner. What I seen last night is the future, and Oiler fans we are in for a treat.

I am proud of the fans this year, we were considered the laughing stock of the league all year. We supported this team like none other, watching the last home game against the Flames made me proud to be an Oilers fan. Crowd was loud and boisterous to cheer the boys on, although we lost we cheered. The same sentiments could not be said for Cancuks fans last night, booing their team all night, pathetic. I am proud to say the our fans do not act like that one goal down.

We were a team projected to finish in the bottom five effectively handing the Ducks a potential stud player in Stamkos or Doughtery, too bad for Burke he will get no better than 10th (I hope). When the injuries began mounting up our team rose, a youthful surge that swept through the locker room. We seen our future for the last three months and we shined. To quote (verbatim) Robert Nillson after last night's final game, "we love each other in this room, we have 16 guys under the age of 25 and we cannot wait for next year to make a serious push".

Some fans will be disappointed with missing the play-offs, but please realize that just the final month push has allowed our young players a taste of "real" hockey, this will pay off in spades in next year.

    Some high-lights from the year:

    - We smashed our record for man games lost to injury from 2006/2007 (345 I believe in total).
    - Three rookies in the top ten rookies in scoring.
    - Tom Gilbert breaks Paul Coffeys Oilers rookie records for goals and points.
    - Our team had the THIRD best record in the league (behind San Jose/Carolina) for the last quarter of the season.
    - We were the youngest team in the league at approx. 25 years of age.
    - Our PP was the worst until the new year to shoot up to 20th (19th a week ago). Considering how awful it was it is amazing they rose up this much in less than half a year remaining.
    - We have most the players in double-digit goal scoring in the league.
    - Etc.

People are slowly starting to realize what kind of team we have, next year we will not be talking about this. Trust me, next year at this time we will be discussing our first round opponents.

Thanks for fun this season Oilers, you gave a kicked in the balls franchise a new identity, one to be proud of for years to come.

The best is yet to come.

    Cheers!

the Oilers definitly exceeded expectations this year, and good for them, especially with not handing the Ducks a really high draft pick.

the future looks bright for the Oilers, and I give them props for knocking out the Canucks on the road

Update on our RFA/UFA's this off-season....from various local media sources

While the Gilbert, Nilsson, and Grebeshkov contracts are already done, and talks with Curtis Glencross have begun, the Oilers haven't even started negotiations with defenceman Joni Pitkanen, and won't until after the World Championships.

"We thought the original conversation with the agent earlier in the year was a little unrealistic," said Oilers director of hockey operations Kevin Prendergast. "Kevin (Lowe) talked to him at the end of the season and Joni said he wants to come back here. It's just a case of getting the agent to buy into what we think is fair."

Kelly believes his guy rates with some of the best defencemen in the NHL, and should be paid accordingly (in excess of $5 million).

"Edmonton is a great place and a great place for Curtis, he's having fun there," said agent Dave Kaye. "I couldn't see why he wouldn't want to be there. He's played very, very well with the amount of ice time he had in Edmonton. He was fifth or sixth on the team in goals, playing fourth line minutes."

Both sides have made offers - now it's a case of trying to meet somewhere in the middle.

"We're in the early, early stages of negotiations," said Kaye, who's hoping to have a deal in place before Glencross becomes a UFA on July 1.

"I think this is a really easy deal to do. Once we get into some fairly regular negotiations this deal will get done fairly quickly."

The Oilers and Jarret Stoll's agent Don Meehan have yet to open discussions.

Rob Schremp knows he needs to improve his strength and his skating if he's going to challenge for a roster spot that's going to be harder to win next year than it was last, so he'll be joining a number of the veterans at their summer fitness camp in California in early May

    Sooooooo?????
What does everyone think of how things are shaping up for the Oil this year?

Torres, Greene, Stoll, Pitkanen are gone

    Visnovsky, Brule, Cole are in...

    What do you think?

I am on the fence right now...I think we shed some dead weight (Torres), gave up a couple of head/heart unknowns (Stoll, Pit), and lost an underrated tough d-man that will now need to be replaced...

In return we got a top two, power play specialist d-man that may be past his prime or over-paid....and a talented power-forward, potential 30 goal guy with injury issues and one year left on his contract. Don't know much about Brule, but he's a top-ten pick, I'm sure the Oil have a lot of scouting reports on him...still reads like a salary dump to me...

I'm reading that we still have upwards of 10 million left under the cap....does Lowe stand pat for now and see what needs to be addressed during the first part of the season, or does he go for a big name 40 goal guy? I would guess that he and Katz are at odds on that one :)

Good luck to you guys with Cole. It's gonna be weird not seeing #26 on the ice for the Canes this season. Very talented player with great speed. He just hasn't been the same since the Orpik hit. As much as I hate to see him go, I am excited about bringing in a talented you D-man. I'm a little concerned about the money it will take to sign him, but I don't think Rutherford would have made the deal if he thought they couldn't sign him for something reasonable.

that's what I was thinking, I dont know. He's from Czech so he is use to the cold and Edmonton IS probably one of the greatest hockey towns out there. We will have to wait and see.

After looking at your pics, I should have went. Toying with the EV East Coast tour. Always wanted to go to NY. We will see

If Jagr doesn't go to Pittsburgh or NYR, he's playing in Europe or retiring. I don't think the odds of him playing in Edmonton are very good. Sorry Oil.
