HailHailVitalogy wrote:I agree with you on that, I knew what I was doing. But it got me so angry that I'm getting fucked again because of a corrupt cop. Yeah the first time I got fucked I was doing 81, which in NY is just a speeding ticket not reckless driving which in the state of VA is on the same level as a DUI/DWI...maybe everyone should take that in consideration. Last time it cost me 3500, and wiped out my savings. This time around I don't have any more than $300. So that is where the anger comes in...I KNEW i was setting myself up once I stepped out but just understand how much last time this fucked me up. Plus now I have a loan to pay off for school, and a family that got fucked with the stock market.
Let me also AGAIN state, that I was polite until I read 77 instead of 67...the radio wasnt BLASTING it was at a minimal volume that I didn't even notice. When I got pulled over i turned it all the way left thinking it was off and I was just thinking about where my registration was.
Thankyou for the people who actually read my posts and understand what the situation was.
EDIT: my inside lights were on...it was my dad's car so I didn't know the headlight was out until he told me when I left his house

that is shit, but two musts when you get pulled over:
-keep your seatbelt on
-turn your car OFF before the cop gets to your window
-keep your hands on the wheel so the cop can see them at all times
if i was a cop, i would be very annnoyed if i pulled someone over and they had their radio going. it's disrepectful.
hope everything works out for you.0 -

Yes pretty much this. Drive the speed limit (it is possible - I do it), signal when you change lanes (too many people do not, and it is dangerous), and at least don't piss off the police unnecessarily. If you are polite, you may get a lower ticket. I've had a headlight go out during a trip, and stopped, when I didn't even know the light was out, but they set it up so I did not have to pay anything as long as I got it fixed within 2 days. And read the tickets before you sign - that would be your right. You can't change the past but you can change the future.R.i.p. Rigoberto Alpizar.

im glad i dont have to put up with this shit. as bad as they are at times, most Gardai here are generally really sound.
if all laws were applied to the book as they can be in on North East USA (from many stories on here over the years), then everyone in Ireland would have serious criminal records & driving charges.
i understand there are reasons for it, its just a whole foreign concept to me. here its more relaxed - obviously, be polite & that, but nothing like the USA, or some other european countries where guns are commonplace.
HailHail, sucks what happened. take some of the advice from here though. Ive had occassions where i should have gotten in a lot of trouble re: license problems, but if u play it cool, deep breaths & relax, it goes better for ya0 -

so you're not allowed get out of your car and walk after a cop? You're not allowed question cops? Sure it's not wise... but I think that's the point he's making... that they shouldn't have so much power simply cos you question them. Surely you're entitled to ask questions?

helen, remember we have guns.....i'm not gonna look it up, but there are hundreds if not thousands of routine traffic stops where the cops was shot and killed.....cops now treat EVERY traffic stop with extreme caution....they just don't know who's behind the wheel....that's why you never get out of your car unless you ask the officer first...it's for your safety and his0 -

Would you expect a police officer to respect you, though? You're starting to paiint with a VERY broad brush. Until a particular person does something to lose my respect, I'll treat an officer with the respect that I feel a person in their position deserves.0 -

Id definitely expect an officer to respect me. When they dont i call them on it (not in cheeky way). Its normal here.
To be fair to Helen, i expect Guardai to be respectful here cos its just how it is here. Obviously having guns around means its different in the states, and theres a hightened level of danger for police, but people who electively put themselves forward to be in that position then shouldnt abuse it against innocent people. That holds for any society.
Shes talking about basic manners (i assume). things like corruption and abuse obviously wouldnt be stood for here, theres few occurences of Garda getting shot, when it does happen the penalties are very severe.0 -

this is the Irish police we're talking about right? or do you mean corruption of the general populace? either way it will and does exist in Ireland.oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.0 -

haha i re-read my sentence:
i meant in face to face conversations with Gardai. the context as OP was in only.
Theres none of the "face forward, wait for instructions, etc" stuff. Its more informal. If a Guard went as far as US police go in the same situation, he could be in serious trouble.
Corruption exists here as it does everywhere. Like i said earlier, laws arent exactly enforced to the letter. Ombudsman for Guards was set up here only 2 years ago to deal with it. They were unanswerable to anyone until then, especially in Donegal, the Guards there pulled some unbelievable shit over the years (deliberately framing innocent people, false imprisonments, general bribing etc)0 -

not only did I live there, I worked for the court system for 3 years. I saw and heard a lot. And I had a case in which I went to trial and the cop bold faced LIED his ass off! I was livid!!!! I mean straight up made shit up. My lawyer tore him apart though. Always helps to have a good lawyer. But it is BS that you you have to spend your money and fight these guys. I've encountered way too many corrupt cops.... I stay as far away from them as possible. Even here in Seattle I've encountered douche bag cops. My neighbors and I almost filed a suit against 5 of them for stalking/harassing us. Look up on youtube "never talk to a cop." Very valuable lesson to be learned."I'll ride the wave where it takes me.."0
