when you're pulled over, put the car in park, turn off the egnition INCLUDING THE RADIO  and keep both hands on the wheen until the cop approaches
and don't be an idiot and get out of the car....you were asking for whatever he gace you at that point
I agree here and if this is at night turn on your inside lights. The easier you make things for the stop the easier he or she may go with tickets and such. I got out of a $246 TICKET for speeding (56-45 double for construction zone) in Palm Beach FL earlier this year by doing all those things and the fact that the officer realized I wasn't or hadn't been drinking.
He let me go, I couldn't believe it.

what he said - the lack of respect for cops is disgraceful - especially in the Philly area. time for the cops to start getting tougher on punks.
exactly. Maybe that's where my anger comes from. Seeing cop after cop funeral kind of jades a law abiding citizen just a bit. The lack of respect for cops makes me sick.

Exactly. Cut the "everyone is out to get me" shit... you made this whole stop a lot harder on yourself by:
-- Not turning the car off (especially the radio) when you pulled over
-- Taking off your seatbelt and rooting around for your registration before the cop got to the door
I'm not saying I don't speed... I just don't whine like a little bitch when I get a ticket for it. And unless you're on the expressway, you know damn well the speed limit isn't 67mph anyway. Playing the "I'm not from around here" card isn't going to get you anywhere on that, so you can shit-can that one from your deck from here on out. I'll be the first to admit that there are some bad cops out there... I'm not sure that this was one of them. Seems to me that you gave him a lot of ammo to work with that you could've avoided.
You already went through the hassle of a reckless driving ticket and a suspension... my advice? Lose the attitude, slow down, and play the game. You may not think that a police officer "deserves" your respect, but a little goes a long way. You just got 4 examples of what showing none will get you.
PLUS, why did you sign the ticket if he wrote down the wrong speed? You're going to have a hell of a time contesting that one if you signed off on it. And please don't tell me "I didn't read it until after I signed it", because it just proves my point.
Well guy, if YOU didn't know ...all over Virginia highways can be either 55 or 65, and change within a half mile of each other, which happens exactly in that area.
The radio was just on, there was minimum volume if there was any at all. When a cop pulls you over, you know the registration is the thing they want so why not have it handy? The only way I can reach across the car is if my seatbelt is off.
And I'm not fuckin playing the "everyones trying to get me game"...I don't believe in that...I'm just stating the fact that I hate cops who abuse their power. You seem to forget that he wrote 77 instead of 67, which is a huge difference in Virginia, which you wouldn't understand cause your in Detroit. I didn't notice the MPH change until I handed it back to him and looked over the tickets. AND I did show respect, I didn't show respect when I saw the wrong MPH down and he completely ignored it. So maybe you should read the WHOLE fuckin story before you start bashing me.
I don't have an attitude in everyday life...I have an attitude when I get fucked with the wrong way. Ask many people even on this board who I have known for years now.

In Florida a state trooper pulled me over for speeding. 55 in a 45.
Did I deserve a ticket? Yeah, maybe I was over the limit, but the road was clear, it was late at night, I was not running in and out of lanes, I was not running red lights. So I asked him, with respect, if he had to write me up. He was a bit of a power hungry cop, he tells me "no matter what, you are getting a ticket" ,I spoke to him with respect, he spoke down to me. He said he would throw me in jail blah blah blah. I guess it's a crime to ask questions?
anyway, this trooper gave me a lecture about how teens die from speeding and so on. I told him, firstly i'm not a teen. He got upset about that, threw the ticket at me and walked back to him car.
I got out of my ride, said "excuse me officer" and gave him a list of stats on the amount of murders taking place and rapes. I told him that he needed to concentrate on dealing with those dangers. He kinda puffed and said "follow the rules of the road" (or something like that, this was a few years ago now)
I say fine, get back into my car and watch the cop pull away into the middle of an intersection, not turn signals. So I start my car, chase him down (not fast) flash him, pull him over and tell him "Excuse me officer, you made a left through that intersection, no signals, now how do I write you a ticket?"
He was pretty shocked, embarrassed and said in a soft voice "ah ah, report me" and he drove off very slowly.
---
Now I've come across some very nice police officers, I've also met some very bad ones. I'm good to the good ones, but rip into the bad ones.
Just because they have a gun and a badge, does not give them the right to treat you badly, it does not give them the right to throw you around, it does not give them the right to speak to you anyway they want.
And once the guy made the brilliant decision to get out of the car and approach the cop, there was no way it wasn't going to get searched.
Put yourself in the cop's shoes: You just stopped some guy that was throwing attitude (maybe not verbally but DEFINITELY through his actions) and handed him 4 tickets. He then gets out of his car and approaches you. You HAVE to think worst-case scenario at that point. The second you don't treat every situation worst-case is the second that you might get shot. He was absolutely justified in cuffing this kid and searching the car.
I agree with you on that, I knew what I was doing. But it got me so angry that I'm getting fucked again because of a corrupt cop. Yeah the first time I got fucked I was doing 81, which in NY is just a speeding ticket not reckless driving which in the state of VA is on the same level as a DUI/DWI...maybe everyone should take that in consideration. Last time it cost me 3500, and wiped out my savings. This time around I don't have any more than $300. So that is where the anger comes in...I KNEW i was setting myself up once I stepped out but just understand how much last time this fucked me up. Plus now I have a loan to pay off for school, and a family that got fucked with the stock market.
Let me also AGAIN state, that I was polite until I read 77 instead of 67...the radio wasnt BLASTING it was at a minimal volume that I didn't even notice. When I got pulled over i turned it all the way left thinking it was off and I was just thinking about where my registration was.
Thankyou for the people who actually read my posts and understand what the situation was.
EDIT: my inside lights were on...it was my dad's car so I didn't know the headlight was out until he told me when I left his house

He can search the car for the headlight being out if he wants. Once there is any reason to be pulled over (there were 3 in this case), a search can be executed.
Are you an idiot? Does it make sense to you that a cop has the right to search your car if your headlight is broken?
--
also, obviously you should turn off your radio and car when pulled over, and don't move around too much. Be nice, be cool.
Signal, and gently pull the car over....stop, turn off the engine, and put on the 4 ways, and turn off the radio. Get out your information, and have it ready if you can without taking off the seatbelt, otherwise leave your seatbelt on, roll down your window before he gets there, and put your hands on the steering wheel where they are visible. This is the routine, and it saves a lot of that grey areas where the cop gets annoyed before even speaking with you.
Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.
Any violation gives him probable cause and it will hold up in court.
That's just wrong, it's false. It does not even make sense. Logic my friend.

People need to learn the laws. The reason cops have this power ego thing is because they know people like you have no idea about the laws. So they use you, abuse you. slap you around...scare you a bit.
People say, grow up, be nice to cops, but since when is being abused and having your rights taken away from you a sign of maturity? It's a sign of stupidity.

You do not have to give consent to a law enforcement officer to search your vehicle. While you do not have to consent, bear in mind that the expectation of privacy in a car is less than the expectation of privacy in your home. Based in part on the lessened expectation of privacy in a car, law enforcement officers are permitted to conduct a warrantless search of a car if the officer has probable cause.
Probable cause exists where the facts and circumstances would cause a reasonable person to believe that evidence of a crime could be located in the area to be searched. With probable cause, law enforcement officers may search any area of the vehicle where the probable cause leads him/her to believe that evidence may be found. In addition to a probable cause search, any time a law enforcement officer sees evidence of a crime in his/her "plain view," s/he can immediately seize the evidence without a warrant.
Any moving violation can get you pulled over(including a headlight out), and at that point any officer can easily "interpret" probable cause for a search should he choose to do so.
Well guy, if YOU didn't know ...all over Virginia highways can be either 55 or 65, and change within a half mile of each other, which happens exactly in that area.
Then you gotta pay attention to what the speed limit is. Pleading ignorance gives the impression that you're not paying attention.

Car should be turned off (radio would've went along with it). If it's running, you're viewed as a threat to take off. Is it probable?? No... but if there's a 1/2% chance, then that's what a cop is going to plan for And you have to think about what it looks like to someone approaching your car if you're rooting around in the glovebox... where do people keep weapons? Oftentimes in the glovebox. Take that element right out of the equation and not getting the stuff until you're asked for it.
So maybe you should read the WHOLE fuckin story before you start bashing me.

If you got popped for 81 in a 55, then you didn't "get fucked". You fucked yourself. And if you knew you were setting yourself up for failure, why get out of the car? You already threw around the "I'm gonna get my lawyer on this guy" thing, so why not let the lawyer do his thing, let the PD know that the officer made an error on the ticket and then go from there? By getting out of the car and making a scene you did nothing but distinguish yourself from every other random stop he made that night. You can bet your sweet ass that after he searched that car, Officer Friendly found a parking lot and wrote about 25 minutes worth of notes on your particular stop.
The only reason I'm posting so much in this thread is because you made a LOT of errors in how you dealt with this situation. Your driving record is, for lack of a better term, fucked (and that's without this current shit on there). When ANY cop runs your license, he's going to be greeted with a laundry list of shit. The only thing that might get you a warning in the future is the way you handle the stop. If you do it by the book and you're polite, you may catch a break. I'm not saying kiss his ass, but a "Yes, sir", "No, sir", "Sir, my registration is in the glovebox... I'm going to reach over there and grab it, OK?" goes a hell of a long way in putting an officer at ease and setting you apart as a decent citizen and not a punkass kid.
That's just wrong, it's false. It does not even make sense. Logic my friend.
Horseshit, dude. Take a CJ class... read a book. Hell, watch an episode or two of COPS. A busted taillight is going to get you stopped. At that point, damn near anything is probable cause, especially if you're rolling through a shady neighborhood.
I'm not positive but I'm pretty sure you technically 'give' permission to an officer to search your car if you left your door open when you approached him. If you shut the door when approaching him I think he would not be able to have legally searched it unless him thinking you were going to be violent plays into it somehow.
Everyone's stated what you did wrong, you should have everything turned off, radio included, etc etc. NEVER reply with a yes when they ask you if you know why they pulled you over. I've been pulled over 3 or 4 times [all because of muffler/exhaust,broken taillights on my old car] and able to get off without a repair and report. Every time I was generally concerned about why I was pulled over and I think if you at least can show that they will be better towards you.
I've had one cop tell me I was killing people by making them fall asleep at the wheel by not having a muffler, and another pulling me over for having a taillight out and yelling to me before he got out of his car [with that fucking bright light] to keep my hands where he could see them. That was a little scary.
You also can't blame anyone for accusing you of being a 'punk ass.' You kind of disrespect one guy by saying he doesn't know anything about Virginia [or dick cops, i'm not sure but I can give you a story on that if you want] because he lives in Detroit. That doesn't make any sense, you don't live in Virginia either. Also a thread titled 'Fuckin cops yo' doesn't necessarily come off very right.
And your biggest mistake was being a Giants fan
EDIT: Note the bold part, not editing it out but bolded and noted as I wasn't aware you lived in Virgina, my apology.
Horseshit, dude. Take a CJ class... read a book. Hell, watch an episode or two of COPS. A busted taillight is going to get you stopped. At that point, damn near anything is probable cause, especially if you're rolling through a shady neighborhood.

Don't get me started on that show!
Serioulsy, a broken headlight is of course cause to pull you over(as I said earlier), but it has nothing to do with searching your car. Does he smell pot? Yes, he may be able to search, but in Canada now I think that's not even grounds to search your car.
Remember that just because cops do it, does not make it fair or right.

I got back from NY last night thinking "alright nice, fresh start back at school"
I'm driving back from my dad's, literally 3 miles away from his house, I get pulled over.
"Son, do you know why I pulled you over?"
"My headlight?"
"I didn't even notice that but you failed to signal when you changed lanes, and I got you 67 in a 55"
"I'm sorry officer I should have signaled and I'm not from around here so I didn't know the speed limit and didn't realize how fast I was going"
"Well it looks like you don't have your seatbelt on either!"
"I just took it off once I pulled over to get my wallet and registration"
"TURN DOWN THE RADIO (was listening to the Giants game)"
Takes my license and leaves
20 minutes later comes back with FOUR tickets and makes me sign all of them. I hand them back to him and I noticed he put me down for 77 instead of 67, so I said something and he just walked away as I was talking to him. I got out of my car and walked towards his car to ask him like what the fuck? He gets out of his car throws me against my car and searches me and searches my car while im in hand cuffs. Takes me out and says "Now will you please have a 'nice day'"
Fuckin, I 20 mph or over is reckless driving in VA, I already got one of those last year which cost me 3500 after a lawyer, fees, tickets, and the driving class I had to take. My license was suspended for 30 days (81 in a 50).
So now I have potentially 15 points to be added to my license ...a second suspension is a year suspension, a third is you can't have your license until your 25, I don't know if they count it as a third time because of all the points.
What a complete ASSHOLE. I am getting my lawyer back and going right back at him.
This is exactly one of the big reasons I moved out of that hell hole!!!! VA sucks dude... get out while you can.
For all of the criticisms of you in this thread HailHail, some of which are fair enough and I'm sure you know that, some people are just being assholes and it is fair enough to say that this cop was being a dick. Just try not to get yourself in that situation again.
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"
but when I've been pulled over I turn into the most polite, charming motherfucker you can imagine.
I'm picturing Eddie Haskell . About as charming a motherfucker as you'd ever meet!

not unless they have probable cause...which is usually pretty easy for a cop to say he had. most judges will almost always agree that there was probably cause.

Horseshit, dude. Take a CJ class... read a book. Hell, watch an episode or two of COPS. A busted taillight is going to get you stopped. At that point, damn near anything is probable cause, especially if you're rolling through a shady neighborhood.
Don't get me started on that show!
Serioulsy, a broken headlight is of course cause to pull you over(as I said earlier), but it has nothing to do with searching your car. Does he smell pot? Yes, he may be able to search, but in Canada now I think that's not even grounds to search your car.
Remember that just because cops do it, does not make it fair or right.

yep,
This is exactly one of the big reasons I moved out of that hell hole!!!! VA sucks dude... get out while you can.
Note the last sentence... At that point, damn near anything is probable cause, especially if you're rolling through a shady neighborhood.
Don't give them an easy reason to stop you, because they'll find something that's cause enough to search your vehicle.
Thank you.
I'm picturing Eddie Haskell . About as charming a motherfucker as you'd ever meet!

See she understands...I know Rose used to live in northern VA...Fairfax County police are corrupt
Also I they can search your car, but if you say no, I believe they have to have a warrant.
not unless they have probable cause...which is usually pretty easy for a cop to say he had. most judges will almost always agree that there was probably cause.
