I got back from NY last night thinking "alright nice, fresh start back at school"

I'm driving back from my dad's, literally 3 miles away from his house, I get pulled over.

"Son, do you know why I pulled you over?"
"My headlight?"

"I didn't even notice that but you failed to signal when you changed lanes, and I got you 67 in a 55"
"I'm sorry officer I should have signaled and I'm not from around here so I didn't know the speed limit and didn't realize how fast I was going"

"Well it looks like you don't have your seatbelt on either!"
"I just took it off once I pulled over to get my wallet and registration"
"TURN DOWN THE RADIO (was listening to the Giants game)"

Takes my license and leaves

20 minutes later comes back with FOUR tickets and makes me sign all of them. I hand them back to him and I noticed he put me down for 77 instead of 67, so I said something and he just walked away as I was talking to him. I got out of my car and walked towards his car to ask him like what the fuck? He gets out of his car throws me against my car and searches me and searches my car while im in hand cuffs. Takes me out and says "Now will you please have a 'nice day'"

Fuckin, I 20 mph or over is reckless driving in VA, I already got one of those last year which cost me 3500 after a lawyer, fees, tickets, and the driving class I had to take. My license was suspended for 30 days (81 in a 50).

So now I have potentially 15 points to be added to my license ...a second suspension is a year suspension, a third is you can't have your license until your 25, I don't know if they count it as a third time because of all the points.

What a complete ASSHOLE. I am getting my lawyer back and going right back at him.

1.) NEVER get out of your vehicle and walk toward the cruiser unless asked to. Unfortunately the guy has no idea if you have a gun or what, so you're for sure gonna get cuffed and searched after that.

2.) With the reckless ticket and suspension on your record just last year, there was no way you were leaving there without tickets.

You did a few things wrong here, but I'm only going on what you've said and I'm sure there's another part to the story. I've read countless tales on the internet about jerkoff cops and the stories almost always leave out quite a bit of pertinent information.
The seatbelt ticket could've been easily avoided. If you get stopped, turn the car off and put the keys on the dash. Think about it: that cop is going to be 100 times more on edge if he's walking up and sees you rooting around for your wallet and registration. Wait until he gets to the door and asks for it and then you say, "OK... it's in my glovebox/pocket/whatever"... and if the car is turned off, your radio wouldn't have been blaring. Even if you left it running, common courtesy tells you to turn it down so you can speak to the cop. I'm sure that was another strike against you. All he's thinking at that point is "punkass kid".

And slow down. Sounds like you speed quite a bit.

How about a little respect for those in uniform who protect our streets and face off against gun toting drug dealers, thieves, and the people that are hell bent on breaking the rules every single day of their lives so that we can feel safe.

oh and learn how to fucking drive.
Don't come closer or I'll have to go
  • Learn how to fuckin drive? Fuck all of you, especially saying respect those in blue. I will not respect a cop who gives me a ticket 10mph more than what he told me I was doing. What was I thinking getting out of the car? The first reckless ticket ruined my life for the time being, and it's going to happen again because of some jerk-off added 10mph to my ticket? When I asked nicely and got nothing in return that's when I got pissed. I knew what I was doing get out of the car, I was going to get hassled for sure, but I wanted an answer. 10mph determines a 500$ consequence to a 3500$ consequence and no license.

I'm a bad driver for doing 67 in a 55? How many of you do 55 in a 55? Give me a fuckin break! And giving me a ticket for taking off my seat belt to get my registration? COME ON!

Yeah I should have signaled to move over, that's what I'm responsible for.

On that note, I have had good cops. Besides last year, and this time beingpulled over I was pulled over while being a DD. Cop pulled me over to make sure I wasn't drunk. He told me to follow him to make sure we all got back to campus safe. I have walked back from parties because I didn't trust my ride, and a cop stopped me to see if I was drunk or not in public and he gave me a ride back to campus.

I'm not shitting on cops, I just hate jerk-off cops who think that since they wear a uniform they can make other peoples lives hell. I would have gladly taken a ticket for 12mph over and the no headlight (I can get it fixed and there's no ticket). And because I am young, they are going to pull me over even if I do 1MPH over the speed limit.

The point was that you're lucky you didn't get into a whole lot more trouble than what you did for getting out of the car.

No, you're a bad driver for not signalling. Doing 67 in a 55 in Virginia when you likely have NY plates on the car(?) isn't bad, it's just not smart. Taking off your seatbelt was also not smart. Getting out of the car was also not smart.

From what you're describing, the cop was a dick. He wasn't looking for you specifically...he was just a dick. And there are things you can do to avoid dickhead cops and encourage them to leave you alone and fuck with someone else who doesn't know any better. These things would include driving slower and signaling.

Man up, accept the mistakes YOU made, and learn from the situation so you can avoid jerk-off cops in the future. That's my advice, sonny ;)

what he said - the lack of respect for cops is disgraceful - especially in the Philly area. time for the cops to start getting tougher on punks.

HailHail - I'm with you, man. Sounds like bullshit to me. Of course being a police officer is a noble profession deserving of respect, but sometimes some cops don't seem to know or care about the consequences of their actions. (I know, everyone slam be because the OP should the think about the consequences of HIS actions. But, much as he deserves the tickets for the things he actually did wrong, no one should pay for things they didn't even do. That kind of thing weakens the very fabric of our justice system.)

Actually, just as I was reading this I found out about a similar situation that is happening to a guy I know. He was on probation for something really stupid that he did a few years ago when he had a drug problem. Now he's been totally clean for quite some time, has a job, pays child support, helps his mom pay her mortgage, etc. He was recently arrested for DUI, but - get this - he PASSED all the breath tests and everything and they arrested him anyway. Now, not only did his family have to pay hundreds of dollars to get him out of jail and get his car out of impound, but he just found out that he is now in violation of his probation. Although he has not been convicted of DUI, he has to turn himself in today, spend a minimum of 3 weeks in jail (where he was nearly killed last time) before he can see a judge, lose his job, become unable to pay child support & help his mom pay her mortgage, and possibly go to prison. And he wasn't even drunk!

Sorry - I don't mean to derail the thread - but this kind of stuff can really ruin people's lives. Punish people for crimes they actually committed, not crimes they didn't commit.

Edit: And another thing - I'm a young, white woman and that kind of thing never happens to me! Granted, I try my best to be polite & respectful and follow all the rules, but cops usually don't give me tickets. I'm happy that that's worked in my favor, but it's still not right.

I agree with you it sounds like this cop was a fucking douche and too many people are a bit holier then though. I mean who hasn't gone 12 mph over the speed limit before? Then the blinker thing is not the worst crime in the world.

Fuck him for writing it down as 77 when he told you it was 67 to begin with. As far as i'm concerned once i read that i don't care what else happened the cop is a jackass and needs to have his little badge shoved up his ass so he learns not to abuse his authority.

Exactly. Cut the "everyone is out to get me" shit... you made this whole stop a lot harder on yourself by:

-- Not turning the car off (especially the radio) when you pulled over
-- Taking off your seatbelt and rooting around for your registration before the cop got to the door

I'm not saying I don't speed... I just don't whine like a little bitch when I get a ticket for it. And unless you're on the expressway, you know damn well the speed limit isn't 67mph anyway. Playing the "I'm not from around here" card isn't going to get you anywhere on that, so you can shit-can that one from your deck from here on out. I'll be the first to admit that there are some bad cops out there... I'm not sure that this was one of them. Seems to me that you gave him a lot of ammo to work with that you could've avoided.

You already went through the hassle of a reckless driving ticket and a suspension... my advice? Lose the attitude, slow down, and play the game. You may not think that a police officer "deserves" your respect, but a little goes a long way. You just got 4 examples of what showing none will get you.

PLUS, why did you sign the ticket if he wrote down the wrong speed? You're going to have a hell of a time contesting that one if you signed off on it. And please don't tell me "I didn't read it until after I signed it", because it just proves my point.

You should be driving like an old lady with your history of driving

Why do you keep giving the cop(s) a reason to pull you over ?? ie (broken light)

Was this cop wrong for lying on the ticket..yes...but they see your record and see you haven't learned your lesson so they fuck you over

Everyone goes over the speed limit...you have to know when and where you can

I had a clean record and showed an old insurance card..I had the new one at home..he believed me because I wasnt blasting a radio or walking towards him when you should stay in the fuckin car...he could have impounded my car right there

Dude I like cops about as much as you do... but when I've been pulled over I turn into the most polite, charming motherfucker you can imagine. You definitely should have had your car and radio off and been waiting for him to approach before you did anything. ESPECIALLY with highway patrolmen in a different state!
Whoa, chill bro... you know you can't raise your voice like that when the lion's here.
