So Irvin Kershner> George Lucas > Richard Marquand
oh please... even Marquand had to have given better direction than:
"ok... the green screen behind you has a big monster on it... we'll put that in later... and theres lasers being shot at you... we'll put those in later too... and... ACTION!"
So Irvin Kershner> George Lucas > Richard Marquand
Hehe. The three prequels sully Lucas' name so much... but Episode 4, and the Indy films redeem him. But I do like Jedi far more than any of the prequels, Ewoks and all. Yub yub!
Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.

Yeah, his dialogue is pretty terrible. Just the whole ewok thing.....kinda killed it for me.....the Darth Vader/Luke battle with the Emperor was the only good thing about the end of that movie....the Lando-death star sequence should have been better and the worst part was the endor scenes after Luke left.....

Yeah, I guess I do like Jedi more than I and II.
My rating goes like this:
1. Empire
2. New Hope
3. Revenge of the Sith (Even with the terrible dialogue)
4. Jedi
5. Clones
6. Phantom Menace
Return of the Jedi and Revenge of the Sith can switch rankings from time to time.
And Ill say this.....the Darth Maul-Obi Wan-Qui-gon scene is underrated.

All the prequels had their moments, for sure. I, for one, love the opening sequence of Clones - up until Jango shoots that other bounty hunter. But Empire, as you said, is the pinnacle of the series. Just stone-cold classic all over.

Pretty much the only good movie Lucas ever directed was A New Hope...

you underestimate lucas's talent and influence when you pass him off merely as a co creator. spielberg did defer to lucas on more than one occasion and has admitted that it was the right thing to do.
perhaps lucas's strength is not directing, or dialogue for that matter, but behind the scenes his worth can never be devalued or underestimated. sometimes editting can make or break a movie, let alone a particular scene.

Exactly - he had help with the dialogue in Episode 4, but he also created the franchise, directed the movie, had enough sense to realise Episode 4 was the most marketable, and so on. Irvin Kershner and Lawrence Kasdan may have created a classic with Empire, but it was George's universe they were playing in.

Yeah, I remember reading that after Harrison Ford said "You can type this shit, George, but you sure as hell can't say it!", George called in some help.:p That scene on the Death Star where Luke's trying to convince Han to help rescue Leia wasn't George's writing at all. (Far too natural.:D)

You just know if George had written that scene, it'd be:
INT. Death Star
Han: No, Luke. I refuse to help you rescue said princess. I do this because I am selfish and out for personal gain only.
Luke: But Han, you must help me save her! Have you no conscience? Did your mother not teach you right from wrong?
Han: My mother was a darling woman.
Luke: I never knew my mother. Or my father.
Han: Think that's of some galactic significance?
Luke: *looks wistful*
C3PO:agitated master luke you must come... its the princess
han rolls his eyes. luke glances at han and shakes his head. he turns his attention to the droid.
luke: the princess! luke looks at han who is mostly ignoring them. what is it? where is she? is she okay C3PO?
C3PO: im sorry master i can't help but notice something appears to be wrong
luke: oh its just han. he refuses to help save the princess.
C3PO: i dont quite understand humans master luke.
luke: C3PO! the princess??
C3PO: oh yes yes master luke i forgot....
han: who was listening cause afterall luke and the droid were talking about him. i have no conscience except that which can be bought. He claps his hand on luke's shoulder how much you got kid?
han grins and luke cant help but smile.
luke: i knew you'd help.
han: whatever. just dont get cocky on me. (oh yes i know i just ripped off lucas)
C3PO shuffles away followed by han and luke.

Well done, well done.
I worked as a manager of a movie theatre when ep. I came out and we had a midnight showing in which I whipped up the crowd and was equally excited to watch along with them. After the show, I just sat in my seat, looking like an ewok who just discovered his mother was shot by a passing AT-ST. I couldn't bear to watch everyone shuffle out in silence. Now, I know Lucas isn't the best at dialogue or directing, but I had no idea he was so out of touch with reality. The prequels were AWFUL. Even ep. III. I was hoping to get a really deep, spiritual quest for Annakin based on J. Campbell's work like A New Hope was. I felt like Lucas was not only writing FOR his kids, he was writing AS his kids. When I was a kid watching the originals in the theatre, I understood all the complexity and nuance, as simple as it was. Why did the prequels have to be so devoid of context or subtlety? I can only think Lucas' ego got in the way.
ok.
ps-Obi Wan is the best. I think his story could have been told with much more gravitas in the prequels.
"Should I tell you my room is walled up? In what way might I leave it? Here is how; Goodwill knows no obstacle. Nothing can stand before a deep desire. All I have to do is imagine a door." -Schultz

yeah but phantom menace started up that whole argument about whether one could or could not stab someone to death with a light sabre. star wars geeks! hilarious!!!
oh and the homage to ben hur wasnt too shabby either.

Yes - the movie was almost worth it for the Star Wars geeks' reactions.

Oh, I know - Indy was named after George's dog and all that. I'm a nerd, guy!
But you have to give him credit for the stories he gave to the world - he really brought back a great sense of innocent adventure to the cinema.
