  • it's a great DVD. it consists of the highlights of all 20 games, done in NFL films' classic style. very moving. it really had me on the edge of my seat during the NFC championship and super bowl highlights. there were also a lot of interesting mic'd up moments from the players, coaches, and refs. i don't want to ruin the ending for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, but the giants end up winning the super bowl. :D

i haven't checked out any of the bonus features yet. it looks like there's a lot of them.

my only complaint is that it isn't in widescreen format. if anyone knows of the availability of a widescreen version, please post that info.

i heard today that they may release a three-disc box set at some point... XXI, XXV, XLII. :D i don't know if this is true or not...
  • quick recap of friday's activities:

gibril wilson: signed with oakland... it's called a "franchise tag," jerry...
    kawika mitchell: signed with buffalo
    reggie torbor: signed with miami
derrick ward: probably on the way out...
    william joseph: released (thank god)

and today, it sounds like the giants are backing down from the deangelo hall trade. good. the already-glaring holes at LB and S just got significantly bigger, so it wouldn't have made any sense to trade draft picks to boost a position of strength.

i'm not gonna lose any sleep over the free agent departures. wilson, mitchell, and torbor were all solid but replaceable, and none were worth the money that they signed for. they can all go out and buy new TVs so they can watch the playoffs next year.

but the giants are gonna need to replace these guys somehow (hopefully with another solid draft). james butler (awful) and michael johnson (promising, but unproven) are the only safeties on the roster right now. craig dahl was cut last week. it sounds like they might pursue eugene wilson, erik coleman, or sammy knight. sammy knight??? isn't he like 60? is myron guyton unavailable?

the starting LBs are alright: kiwi, AP, and wilkinson. but i'm worried that AP might be starting to lose a step and i'm still not quite sure what to expect from kiwi. depth is also an issue. i like chase blackburn, but the giants are in trouble if he has to step in as a starter for any extended stretch. tank daniels and zak deossie are very good on special teams, but who knows if they'll do a passable job at LB?

and of course, the eagles signed asante samuel. i'm not sure what to think about this. on one hand, the NFC east just got even tougher than it already was. on the other hand, the eagles gave $50 million to a guy who isn't a WR. hmmm...

I love that NFL Films stuff. i wonder what they'll do with that video now that Inside The NFL was cancelled by HBO. Probably NFL Network, but they have a very limited audience

Not a real big deal on the free agent losses. I like Wilson, but Oakland gave him waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to much money. Wilkinson looks like he could be real good in place of Mitchell. I think we'll draft a LB with pick 31.

I read Sammy Knight also, and thought the same thing...how old is that guy ???

I'm glad the Eagles signed Samuel..now he'll get to drop clinching INT's twice a year against us instead of in Super Bowls

I heard that they were trying for Mitchell but the price was getting too high. And a lot of teams (especially the Saints) were asking for Shockey. But the Giants say they're not looking to trade him.

I got the DVD as well and am disappointed it's only in fullscreen format. Aside from that though, I did watch it like 6 times.

The bonus features include the "Game of the Week" highlights from the Dallas and Green Bay games.. which is basically like an NFL films (each is about 15-20 minutes long). The Tom Petty halftime show is also on the bonus features. NFL Network post-game coverage is also there, it has a bunch of interviews from players and coaches from right after the game. And Media Day highlights. For some reason there is a profile of Mathias Kiwanuka on there, probably just a filler.. but there is also a Strahan, Coughlin, and Eli thing too. Pretty cool, but short.

As for the old NFL Films things, I think they are basically now just a part of the NFL Network, Steve Sabol (the founder and dude that hosts them all) works there now, and although he doesn't appear on the DVD, the crew that does the NFL Films did the highlights from the DVD.. And Harry Callis does the Superbowl Highlights (in traditional NFL Films style :D).

Oh, another thing I wanted to mention about the DVD.. The sound bytes they get are amazing! I love it how they got the refs talking to each other. Mike Carey had a lot of good things to say about the game.

Comments from the refs during the game:

"The whole line is just putting big time pressure"
"I don't think Brady's gotten hit that many times in a game let alone 3 quarters"

"I just like this contest, this contest is great. I don't know how it's playing on TV but this contest is great."

"Great game you know, there's not a lot of points but this is nice in the pits."

"3rd and goal from the 7, they can't get a first.. Ooo I like this contest."

They also got Strahan's "17-14 is the final, believe it and it will happen" sideline rant!

    Gotta love that :D

they tried to re-sign both of them but were never going to offer the kind of money that the raiders and bills did. evidently, they didn't even think gibril wilson was worth the $4.3 million franchise tender.

sammy knight is really just a stopgap. i expect the giants to address this position early in the draft.

at LB, gerris wilkinson will probably be better than kawika mitchell in the long run. this will also be an area of focus in the draft.

several teams have inquired about trading for shockey. the saints are believed to have offered a second round pick, which the giants turned down.

jerry reese has made it clear that he has no intention of trading shockey.

my favorite was when they asked tom coughlin about his face freezing during the green bay game:

"at least they were talking about my face this year. last year it was my ass!"

speaking of DVDs, there's another one coming out sometime around father's day. it's called "four games to glory" and it features all four playoff games in their entirety, plus the regular season game against the patriots for some reason (or so the rumor goes).

That's cool, I downloaded the Super Bowl on a torrent site and at least once a day I end up watching a few minutes of either the DVD or the Bowl..

how do I get the DVD (dying to watch the playoff games again) and

what the fuck with not signing WILSON! He will be missed...big time. He is the Giants version of Troy Palomatououu (steelers guy however the fuck you spell it). he is in on every play.

you can get it from just about any store or website that sells DVDs or sporting goods.

it looks like amazon has it for $5.00 cheaper than nflshop.com:

i liked gibril wilson as much as anyone, but he's no troy polamalu by any stretch of the imagination. he's an above-average safety who was a steal in the fifth round. he is a very good tackler and run stopper, but he sometimes stuggles in pass coverage (due to a lack of speed and a tendency to be out of position). i was hoping they'd re-sign him, but $39 million was way too much money...

in the immediate future, the giants are going to have to restructure and/or extend the contracts of michael strahan, osi umenyiora, eli manning, plaxico burress, chris snee, brandon jacobs, and david diehl. that's gonna be expensive, so they have to be careful about how they spend their money right now.

sammy knight certainly isn't as good as gibril wilson, but he isn't five million dollars worse either (which is how much less he'll be making in '08). he's durable, has a high football IQ, and jerry reese likes his leadership ability (both on the field and as a mentor to younger guys like james butler and michael johnson). i think johnson will eventually be as good as wilson anyway.
  • Finally watched the dvd,...few notices....
-that video showed just how much of leader michael strahan is
-sam madison is a funny dude
-the team really had a strong sense of "team unity" ; more than I really ever knew
-justin tuck was in on almost every defensive highlight all year
-kawicka mitchell was in on more big plays than i realized. gonna miss him
    -best nfl season ever!
-that team was the definition of heart

I've watched the DVD about 20x already, it's awesome.

Hopefully they end up selling full versions of all four playoff games. They're taking up too much room on my DVR.

yeah, seriously... way too much room...

it looks like you'll be able to free up that space in about three months:

but i don't know how reliable that date is, seeing as how warner bros. doesn't seem to know who won the game yet.

You can download the Super Bowl on most any of the popular torrent sites. I ran a search on some of the other playoff games. Found one or two, but I didn't look too hard for them.

If you're interested in getting the games off of your DVR I'm sure you can find them somewhere to download and toss on a DVD.

have you consdered a DVD Recorder. The prices have dropped big time. I plan on getting one soon.
  • Awesome. I thought about that when I saw he was released. hopefully he never plays, but it's good to have insurance, and he's obviously way better than The Pillsbury Throwboy.
  • I rather see then get rid of anthony wright. have carr #2, and keep the hefty lefty lorenzen as #3. I think he's a good locker room sideline guy.

the hefty lefty is the man. I like the guy. He should be in the game on all 4th and 1 for QB sneaks. He is 400 lbs for christ sake.

That said, if Eli gets hurt, giants are fucked. period.

  • I guess in a way I don't blame him. He went out on top.
Thank God we have Justin Tuck to fill his spot. If healthy,...he has the ability to dominate. Not to mention Kiwanuka, and Wynn.

Strahan certainly will be missed not only on the field but he was a true leader.
