OH my gosh, PJaddicted!! There are no words! Getting the news that your dog IS going to die sooner than you thought, despite all the wonderful things you did and will contine to do is a very bitter bit of news to deal with, indeed. I will hope for the best and send all my good vibes (charley & Remy send their fuzzy good vibes) to you and Petey...Just make the next couple of years with him the best ever (or rather, just keep up what you've been doing cuz it already does sound like the best life ever!)...treat him like you normally would so that he doesn't suspect anything...and also, know that miracles can happen in the doggy world...our friends were told to say goodbye to their dalmation 3 years ago because the vet and several specialists saw a lump on his heart during an Echo and MRI, but he's still around, just a little slower, at 11 years - which is really great for a dalmation...Petey might surprise you and just stay well for a long time for you...It's unlikely he wants to leave his home and all your love anytime soon...

Our thoughts are with you from the west coast of Canada....

i just did a quick wiki search, and it brought up the disease in regards to humans. i read a bit, but stopped here:

"For many affected individuals, dilated cardiomyopathy is a condition which will not limit the quality or duration of life"

i am hoping perhaps the same may hold true for petey?

edit - oh god....i should've googled DCM in dobermans FIRST. nevermind. holy fuck, my heart breaks for you carol and petey........

D2D...I wish that were true for Dobermans, his time is very limited now, he is already progressed. He had a episode during his 24 hour heart monitor test of 288bpm that went on for 80 minutes, that alone could cause sudden death. I can not believe this is happening to my beautiful baby. Thanks for the prayers and well wishes. I will give him the best life possible for the time he has left here with me. I am the kiss of death to dogs, none of mine get to grow old. They are my favorite part of life, and at this point I don't think that I can go through the pain of losing them so close together anymore, Petey is my dream dog, waited 22 years to finally get my Red Male Boy...he has been such a blessing everyday. I know there are reasons why everything happens, but this one is really hard to understand. Why 3 years old?

    yes, i see now....when i read further........ :(

you have given him the best life possible - no dog could ask for a better life!
and while certainly everyone, including dogs i am sure...would love a long life...i am sure petey is happy to have the life he has had with you, short or long. there really are no reasons, just life...but that is of little comfort. i cannot imagine what you are going through. all i can think to some degree is that maybe knowing is better? my beloved sinead died suddenly, no symptoms...just like that. i woke up one saturday morning and she was still in her doggie bed which is very unusual and i go over and she can't get up, her tongue/gums are white...she looks frightened and i am beyond myself. i won't go into all the details of all that transpired, but suffice to say, she died in the car in our frenzy to the vets. devestated. she was absolutely perfect up until that point. so idk really which is better, knowing or not knowing, but after that experience, i think i kinda favor knowing. but i am rambling now.

btw - you are NOT the kiss of death for dogs! not at ALL. you are an utter BLESSING to every dog who has ever been in your life. i think it's pure dumb, horrible luck. sadly, so many purebreds tend to have these predispositions and issues, that's why oftentimes mutts are the way to go in that sense. either way, ANY dog would be so LUCKY to live with you.

    love to you.....love to petey........

Oh no I am so sorry. Every moment is more precious than the last now and I pray there are medications to help Petey stay by your side as long as possible. Having lost 2 of our doggies under 5 years of age for congenital reasons I know this pain but remember you and Petey are in everyones prayers and positive thoughts and this can heal you both. Be strong and fill your heart and thoughts with the love that has grown for Petey over these short years. This love will take the sadness away eventually.

Carol and Petey, my heart is just breaking for you. I don't know what kind of treatment options are available for Petey for the limited time he has left but it's clear to me that NO ONE could love him more than you do. He has had the best life any dog could have with you and in his time remaining will receive the best care.

Even though I don't know you, I've felt a special affection for you and Petey through this thread, in part because of my own dog that was named Petey. But also, as someone who has trained and shown dogs in Obedience for 20 years, I can see how caring and responsible you are toward him (and all animals).

I don't know what else to add that hasn't already been said except that I'm angry at the unfairness of this. This is so wrong. Take care of yourself, as much as you can. I know you are taking good care of Petey.

It's very unfair that this would happen to you, the super owner, and to Petey, the super dog. There are no reasons, I don't think. Stay strong.... we're all pulling for you.

Anyone here ever have a doggie eat another dogs shit?
I haven't but, but I was at a friends house and experienced this grotesque behavior, I almost tossed my cookies..sorry for the disturbing image but just wondering if the dog is fundamentally flawed or if he can be trained not to eat shit anymore?

again, sorry for the unpleasant post, but you know...what are you gonna do?

That's not abnormal, they're dogs after all. Shit is a delicacy to them.

The only advice I can give is this: Keep your dog away from cat shit.

Yeah, it's gross. One of my dogs taught the other to do it. :problem:
There are things like this you can use that will get them to stop. You have to use it again every so often.

Thanks so much everyone for your well wishes for my Petey! Life will go on as normal for the time he has left with my family. He is presently sleeping in a sun spot on the floor. Yesterday we went for a 1 hour hike, because that is his favorite thing to do of all. He will get more treats, because gaining weight is no longer an issue...living out his remaining days in pure pleasure is.

PJaddicted, I'm very sorry to hear about Petey. It sounds like you already know he has a limited time left. Did the doctors give you a timeline, or do you know this from experiences with your other dogs?
