    Ward on the move?

Defenseman Aaron Ward left the ice this morning during an optional practice after he was told he would be scratched for tonight's game against Columbus, raising the possibility that he could be traded before Tuesday's deadline.

Rumors surfaced a few weeks ago that Nashville had inquired about Ward, and more recently, San Jose has apparently discussed a potential three-way deal with the Rangers and Kings in which Ward would go to San Jose and the Rangers would receive either D Brent Sopel or Mattias Norstrom from LA.

The normally chatty Ward, who signed a two-year free-agent deal last summer after winning the Stanley Cup with Carolina, strode briskly past reporters who were unaware of the circumstances of his departure from the ice after the skate.

Coach Tom Renney would only say that he had not settled on his blue-line combinations yet, because at least one player had flu symptoms.

Ward, 34, has played in all 60 games, scored three goals and registered 10 assists, and is a minus 3. He has been playing with a broken toe and been part of several defensive breakdowns in recent weeks.

Several sources said that Ward engaged in a loud dispute with Jaromir Jagr on the Rangers bench during a Tampa game earlier this month, although the fallout from that was unclear.

Renney also indicated that Brendan Shanahan, who suffered a concussion in the collision with the Fkyers Mike Knuble a week ago as is on IR, met with his neurologist yesterday and is doing well, but that he was progressing a little slower than expected. He is only permitted to do light stretching, no stationary biking or skating, and Renney said he couldn't put a timetable on his return.

“They’re being very cautious,” Renney said. “It’s moving forward, maybe a little slower than they would’ve hoped, but they’re not surprised by where he is right now. I don’t know what that means as a time frame, to be honest with you; I’m paraphrasing and guessing at the length of time. He’s progressing but I don’t think it’s as quickly as they hoped. That doesn’t mean it’s inaccurate either. It’s a bit of a moving target.”

Yeah, a former Bruin also. The first Canes playoff game I ever saw was back in 99. I had to drive to Greensboro to see them play Boston and Carter was a Bruin back then.

And it looks like Tkachuk is going to Atl. The Thrashers are feeling desperate and it looks like they may give up quite a bit: http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2779078

    Updated: Feb. 25, 2007, 10:03 AM ET
Thrashers closing in on trades for Tkachuk, Zhitnik ESPN.com news services

Keith Tkachuk appears to be headed out of St. Louis

A source confirmed to ESPN.com's Scott Burnside that the Blues will send Tkachuk to Atlanta for a first-round draft pick, a player from the roster, another draft pick and a third conditional draft choice.

However, another source told ESPN.com that several details of the deal have to be worked out before the trade will become official, including Tkachuk waving his no-trade clause.

The pending trade was first reported by TSN of Canada.

The 34-year-old forward has 20 goals and 43 points this season. Tkachuk has tallied 911 points, including 466 goals, with three teams during his NHL career.

In other trade news Sunday, the Thrashers reportedly acquired veteran Alexei Zhitnik from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for top prospect Braydon Coburn, according to TSN.

Zhitnik was acquired by the Flyers earlier this season from the New York Islanders. He has 23points so far this season.

    found this toda- very interesting

    http://politicalwire.com/archives/2007/02/23/in_ct4_democrats_eye_richter.html

    February 23, 2007
    In CT-4, Democrats Eye Richter

Westport First Selectwoman Diane Farrell (D), who drew an impressive 48% against Rep. Christopher Shays in 2004, finished with 48% again last year, demonstrating the depth of Shays's appeal and his improved campaign. Democrats apparently will need an even stronger challenger next year, and while there are plenty of Democratic officeholders in the area, defeating Shays won't be easy.

Farrell apparently won't try again, and unsuccessful Senate nominee Ned Lamont also isn't interested. But a number of Democratic names are mentioned, including state Sen. Andrew McDonald, state Rep. Jim Shapiro and state Sen. Bob Duff.

Possibly the most intriguing name for Democrats is Mike Richter, the former New York Rangers goalie whose name was tested in a recent telephone poll in Connecticut. But Richter, who just received his undergraduate degree from Yale and campaigned for John Hall (D) in NY 19, apparently is looking at a number of districts in more than one state before he makes a final decision.

-- Nathan Gonzales is political editor of the Rothenberg Political Report.

could all the shuffling only be a coincidence ?

    krog = waived
ward = scratched and grumpy off the ice

please slats throw rachunek in as an extra

all the chat is about a defenseman coming t NYR , but shouldnt we act as if Shanny isnt going to return this season ?

One of the writers mentioned about bringing up some of the younger guys from Hartford.I think its time, start cultivating some of that home grown Ranger blood .

not sure if you fellas ( and gals ) saw this piece from sherry ross about Jagr. She calls him " J- Rod "

    J - Rod

    J-Rod

As he continues to come up small in big sports,
Jagr is becoming the Rangers' Alex on ice

Jaromir Jagr has not been on his best behavior. Did this town really need another A-Rod?

Now that Jaromir Jagr appears to be one bad haircut away from a Britney Spears moment, we have to ask: What do the Rangers do now? And, are we really surprised that he has become the Blueshirts' version of Alex Rodriguez?
Last season's performance by J-Rod can now be seen as less a renaissance than an aberration, a rare glimpse of what Jagr is still capable of when he puts his mind and shoulder to it. Maybe Jagr isn't the same player since he suffered that freakish injury against the Devils in last year's playoffs, but he certainly started this season off well enough, and up until the All-Star break, he was battling with Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby for the scoring title.

Jagr refused to play in the All-Star Game. He refused to take part in shootouts. He refused the Rangers captaincy for a year. I think I see a pattern here.

Let's say, for argument's sake, that Jagr is not at 100% because of his shoulder or some other undisclosed ailment. Let's say he's a little embarrassed at being 0-for-3 in shootout attempts this season. Still, how does he, in good conscience, sit and watch Matt Cullen - Matt Cullen! - go out in his place in the shootout on Thursday night against Martin Brodeur, in a game the Rangers needed so badly?

Patrik Elias, in his first season as Devils captain, was arguably in worse shape than Jagr after being stricken with the flu. He failed in his shootout attempt, but at least he didn't sit and watch. Elias took a shot at giving his team the win, and the Devils are hardly in the same dire straits as the Rangers.

Rangers coach Tom Renney said Jagr "wasn't interested in shooting." Maybe there's a rehab clinic for the Brodeur-phobic. Jagr could check in anonymously as "Shakes the Clown."

Always enigmatic, Jagr now seems more like the sensitive, sulky player he was in Pittsburgh (post-Cup era) and Washington than the joyful force he was for the Rangers last season. Remember that the Caps wanted to be rid of him so desperately that they will end up eating more than $11 million of Jagr's salary through next season - even if Jagr ends up playing elsewhere. It's a bizarre option, since the Rangers have spent the last three years specifically tailoring the team around him, but aside from a four-game sweep in the playoffs, where has he gotten them?

With a year remaining on his deal (not counting what the Caps are picking up, he will make $4.9 million next season), Jagr isn't the rental player that players like Bill Guerin and Eric Brewer are, so any team interested would have to have cap room. Then again, given GM-for-life Glen Sather's dismal track record in selling off the great assets of the 1980s Oilers, why should you have any faith that the Rangers could reinvent themselves - which they've done more times and far less successfully than Madonna - if Sather could turn Jagr into foundation stock for the future?

In no other major pro sport is the "C" as meaningful as it is in hockey. It is a tradition that goes back to when Bun Cook wore a wool sweater, but it is still meaningful to this day. Think of the successful NHL teams of the past decade and how they were defined by their captains: Scott Stevens, who let his physical play do the talking; Joe Sakic and his steely class. Rod Brind'Amour's gritty attention to detail. Every person has their own agenda. A good captain never lets himself get in the way of the team's best interest.

Then again, maybe he is the perfect captain for the Rangers, the symbol of everything that has gone wrong with the team's philosophy since a different captain carried the Cup 13 years ago.

    Tip of the cap

The salary cap shouldn't prove any deterrent to teams making moves to stock up for the playoff run, or so says one man who figures to be among the prominent "sellers" before Tuesday's 3 p.m. deadline. With the Washington Capitals one of the few teams virtually eliminated from playoff contention, GM George McPhee may look to trim his already paltry $31 million budget by finding good homes for some of his veterans, and he thinks there will be plenty of trade activity.

"It doesn't seem to matter at this point," McPhee said of the cap, which is in its second year. "Most teams have room to do deals. It feels like any other year around the deadline."

Last year, McPhee dealt defenseman Brendan Witt (now with the Islanders) to Nashville for Kris Beech and a first-round draft pick, and former Devil Jeff Friesen to Anaheim for a second-round pick, both on deadline day. Dainus Zubrus is a logical candidate to tempt a contender.

"It's a fun time for a lot of people," McPhee said. "Fans can play armchair quarterback, and GMs are trying to improve their clubs."

    Quick Whistles

"The Number 23" opened Friday. It's a horror flick. I hear it's about what the Devils will face once they lose Scott Gomez to free agency this summer. Scary.

Chris Drury suffered his second concussion in three years in Thursday night's brawl-filled Buffalo-Ottawa game. Bad news for the banged-up Sabres, and for Drury's bank account as well, since he is one of the best of the pending free agent crop of '07.

Both the Rangers (at No. 12) and the Islanders (at No. 15) had chances to draft Zach Parise in 2003 before the Devils traded up to get him at No. 17, in case you're wondering why the best hockey organization in the tri-state area is the one in New Jersey.

    Fast ice

And the Oscar goes to . . .

    1. The Buffalo Sabres and Ottawa Senators in "No Time for Nuts" (it's a real film; you could look it up).

    2. Peter Forsberg for "The Departed."

    3. Every team currently out of a playoff position in "An Inconvenient Truth."

    4. "Apocalypto," starring the New York Rangers.

    5. Devils forward Cam Janssen, after being relieved of most of his uniform after a fight, in "The Devil Wears Nada."

Jagr is the worst. I am a penguins fan and I know. He just takes a roster spot and a lot of money. In the regular season he sometimes shines, especially in games where it has already been won. In the playoffs he disapears. In last years playoffs, literally. On the penguins, with the exception of the first few years, it was as if he just didn't care about winning the stanley cup. A person would lay their hand on his back and he would be completely pinned to the boards. It was frustrating. Anyway, good luck.

A Rangers victory tonight, coupled with an Islanders loss, could lift the Blueshirts to within five points of the top eight with multiple games in hand against all three teams in the Nos. 6-8 positions. Since Boston loss to Atlanta on Monday night, the teams in the Rangers' headlights right now are the Maple Leafs, who lost 5-3 in Montreal on Monday, and the Islanders, who will face the Blueshirts four times in these final 20 games.

    JAGR ON BLOCK
SATHER TO GMS: KNOCK ME OUT, HE'S YOURS
By LARRY BROOKS and MARK EVERSON

Ranger captain Jaromir Jagr is available if some NHL GM is willing to pay a big enough price by today's 3 p.m. trade deadline.

February 27, 2007 -- The GM who has traded away Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier is said to be working on the superstar hat trick - soliciting trade-deadline offers for Ranger captain Jaromir Jagr.

While the Rangers placed Jason Krog on waivers yesterday, Glen Sather is said to have told potential trading partners that he'd consider trading Jagr if presented an offer that "knocked him out."

The NHL trading deadline is 3 p.m. today.

Meanwhile, sources continue to insist that the Islanders are listening to offers for heart-and-soul forward Jason Blake, with Nashville speculated as a potential destination. The Isles dealt a second-rounder yesterday to the Caps for Richard Zednik.

Jagr has been the subject of controversy lately for his failure to take part in shootouts, including the last two against the Devils.

A short-notice deal for Jagr would be difficult to engineer. It is believed that any trading partner would be cap-responsible for only $4.9 million of Jagr's salary of $8.4 million, but it seems unlikely anyone would be willing to take on the 35-year-old now 15 years from his last Stanley Cup.

The Rangers acquired Jagr from the Caps in 2004 for Anson Carter in a deal fraught with financial considerations. Washington acquired him from Pittsburgh in 2001 with Frantisek Kucera for Kris Beech, Michal Sivek, Ross Lupaschuk and futures.

The invitation to bid is believed to have been extended to at least one Western Conference team. One piece of speculation suggested he might be an even exchange for Florida's Todd Bertuzzi, who has yet to play this season.

Jagr leads the Rangers in scoring at 22-52-74 in 62 games, but those figures, particularly the goal total, are disappointing after last season's 54-69-123, two points behind leader Joe Thornton.

Blake is headed toward unrestricted free agency and expressed disappointment that the Isles hadn't signed him long-term.

The Penguins, Sharks and Red Wings also were believed among teams interested in Blake, leading the Isles in goals and points at 29-23-52 in 62 games.
