10. Returns to Garden as opponent, March 20, 2006 – Two years and 17 days after the abomination of a trade that sent him to Toronto, Leetch finally plays the Garden (in a Boston Bruins sweater). Long denied the affection Rangers fans showered upon Mark Messier, Mike Richter and Adam Graves, Leetch feels the love on a memorable night complete with pregame video tribute, extended and thunderous game-opening ovation and third-period-long chanting of his name.

9. Drafted 9th overall in 1986 – Rangers scout Ray Clearwater tells the story of then-GM Craig Patrick hoping to save his job by swinging a Draft Day deal with either Detroit (first pick) or Los Angeles (second) to then take either Joe Murphy or Jimmy Carson. Patrick says Rangers scouts had Leetch rated No. 1 and he held his breath through the first eight picks. Either way, on June 21 in the Montreal Forum, Brian Leetch becomes a Ranger.

No Ranger has won since. Leetch scores a career-high 23 goals and records 71 points in 68 games in his first full NHL season.

Wins Norris Trophy in 1997 – Amid a storybook season highlighted by the reunion of Wayne Gretzky and Messier and culminating with a Cinderella run to the conference finals, Leetch wins his second Norris. He eclipses 20 goals for the fourth time in his career to become the first and only two-time Norris Trophy winner in franchise history.

5. Wins Norris Trophy in 1992 – Taking an already fine career to another level, Leetch’s first season with Messier as a teammate was the finest a Rangers defenseman has ever had. His 102 points and 80 assists remain the franchise single-season records for D-men. So do the 17-game points and 15-game assists streaks he had that season. The first Norris won by a Ranger in 25 years and only the third in franchise history.

4. Captains Team USA to 1996 World Cup title – While 1980 rightly stands alone in American hockey history, this was the only time that we’ve come out on top when the best in the world from every country came together. Of course, Richter’s absurd goaltending had a little something to do with it.

3. Spin-o-rama goal against Martin Brodeur in Game 7 against the Devils in ‘94 – Until Valeri Zelepukin scored with 7.7 seconds left to tie it (making “Matteau! Matteau! Matteau!” necessary), the only goal of one of the greatest games in NHL history was Leetch’s dash, spin and tuck. Perhaps uncomfortable with the spotlight of such an achievement, Leetch did little more than watch Zelepukin score.

Scores first goal in Game 7 of ‘94 Cup Finals – With Hockey New York on the verge of a nervous breakdown and even his teammates screaming from the bench for him to let it go, Leetch calmly waits until the moment is right before whisking the puck into the yawning cage to provide the desperately-needed early lead.

1. Wins Conn Smythe Trophy as 1994 playoffs MVP – 34 points (11 of them goals, including three series clinchers) in one postseason? For a defenseman? And throw in the pounding that left him unable to raise his arms to celebrate a goal in the Finals and the insane benching by Mike Keenan in Game 4 against the Devils? Messier, who has seen a phenomenal playoff performance or a thousand ranks it as perhaps the best ever. Even better – he’s the only American ever to win the award.

Well, we know one half of the equation: Marcel Hossa didn’t skate because of back spasms.

As for Marek Malik, that’s where things get interesting.

The often-maligned defenseman not only didn’t skate today, but his equipment wasn’t hanging in his locker (although his practice jersey was still hanging and pictures of his two sons were still taped to the wall). When asked where he was, Tom Renney would only say it was “internal matter.”

Renney wouldn’t say whether Malik was suspended, and when I asked whether Malik was being moved, Renney said, “No. He’s a Ranger, and it’s just an internal issue right now.”

Of course, being a Ranger now doesn’t mean he’s a Ranger in a few hours when a deal is completed. Or it could mean that he’s been waived. But that’s only speculation at this point.

For what it’s worth Malik has been scratched four of the last nine games, is set to make $2.5 million this season, and is a UFA at season’s end.

Either way, try to contain your excitement until we know anything definitive.

On to less pressing matters:

# There is the issue of timing to consider here. If the Rangers have a deal in place, they would be reticent to finalize it today given the significance of tonight. It also explains why Renney wouldn’t want to talk about it today.

# Malik’s absence means Paul Mara is back in the lineup. Should a deal be imminent, this may explain why Malik played on Tuesday and Mara sat out: Were the Rangers’ showcasing him?

# Unrest in the Rangers dressing room: Sean Avery was trying to talk a Rangers staffer into letting him bring extra guests to the Brian Leetch after-party tonight, only to be told they wouldn’t get in.

# Just a thought here: maybe the Rangers didn’t want a Malik giveaway to mar Brian Leetch Night. OK, that’s not nice…
