    Trouble A-Bruin
The Rangers may lead the Eastern Conference with 26 points, but the Boston Bruins come into tonight's contest at Madison Square Garden with the best record percentage-wise at 10-3-3, riding a five game winning streak and an 8-1 mark in their last nine after stumbling out of the gate at 2-2-3. The Rangers, meanwhile, have been stumbling lately, but to keep things in perspective, 6-3-1 in your last ten is the definition of stumbling only after you start the season 5-0 and 10-2-1 (though 2-3-1 in your last six is closer to the mark with a smaller sample size).

Like the Rangers with Henrik Lundqvist, the Bruins have forged their record largely with superior goaltending. Although Manny Fernandez backstopped their last win, 6-1 over Montreal, Tim Thomas, who will be in goal tonight, leads the NHL in save percentage (.946) and is second in goals against average (1.76). Don't expect a high scoring affair tonight -- these are the second and third best defenses in the league, thanks again to the goalies. The Bruins have allowed just nine goals in their last eight games, three of those in the one loss in that span.

It would be nice to get it in regulation though, especially against an Eastern Conference opponent.

Rangers Pull a Rabbit Out of Their Hat

In the "All's well that ends well" department, the Rangers came back from yet another 2-0 deficit to reach a shootout, the third time in their last six home games they have done exactly that.  This time, unlike the last time, they prevailed in the shootout when Chris Drury fooled Tim Thomas with a sly, almost imperceptible double clutch to score after three scoreless rounds and Henrik Lundqvist survived the referee's silly initial goal call, one that was reversed by replay.

The win negated the damage inflicted in this game by a woefully inept power play, which not only failed to win this game when it had the chance, it almost lost the game, giving up the sixth shorthanded goal of the young season. The win also negated the damage done by the once-again error prone Michal Rozsival, who was victimized for both Boston goals, including that shorthanded goal, the third that has resulted directly from a miscue of his. Wade Redden is fortunate not to be in this same category -- his miscues, including a horrendous turnover in the slot and a near-breakaway that ensued when he tripped over the red line (along with the power play the Bruins got as the Rangers tried to defuse the resulting situation) were erased by Lundqvist.

But this one win doesn't mitigate the ongoing problems with the power play, which reverted to form (bad form) after a good four-game stretch. Coach Tom Renney insisted afterwards that Boston get credit for shutting it down, but despite a good penalty killing stretch for them during their now-ended five game win streak, they are 22nd in the league in that area, and were far less responsible for short-circuiting the Rangers' advantages (two of them two-man advantages) than the Rangers themselves. At some point, Renney his going to have to look beyond execution to the possibility that there are problems with either the system or with the available personnel.

As for Rozsival and Redden, who are part of a corps of defensemen who have been effective in inverse order of their salaries, there is no excusing their mistakes. But the treatment of Rozsival by the fans as well as the tension that was so palpable in the arena during Ranger power plays (even the first one when the score was still 0-0 and the Rangers were in control of play) leads us to pose a simple question to those fans who chose that route: How would you react if the team itself, individually or as a group, chose to quit on themselves as quickly and decisively as you quit on them? If they did that, the Bruins would have been able to cruise to another 6-1 win rather than being caught by behind in the final minutes. But they didn't quit.

Busy morning here tomorrow, so look for a story at Blueshirt Bulletin+ later in the day, focusing on the third line of Lauri Korpikoski, Nigel Dawes, and Dan Fritsche, who got the goal that started the comeback after getting some power play time that was taken away from the usual units who were so ineffective (ditto Marc Staal in place of Rozsival in the third period). Check back right here for a link to that story when it becomes available, as well as links to other news around the web.

  • The Rangers are currently tied with the franchise records for most points (30), most wins (14) and least regulation losses (five) through 21 games in team history. The last time the Blueshirts reached these marks was in 1993-94.

The Rangers have allowed two or fewer goals in 16 of their first 21 contests for only the second time since 1943-44, and have posted a 13-2-1 record in those games.

first meeting for Naslund tonight with his exteam/ exteammates .

stanley cup of 1994 reunion , should be great , if we can keep rolling and getting the 2 points.
it would be nice, however , to get them in regulation for a change.

Nice to see Naslund doing well .....from all reports we hear locally he seems to be really rejuvenated in the Big Apple. Nazzy as was his nickname here was always a class act, and it was kind of a shame to see him leave the way he did. A few years back that snap shoot of his was second to none in the NHL!

Now for travel don't get me started! We play tonight in NYC tomorrow in Minnesota and back to Pittsburgh for a Saturday morning game???

damn, I remember that accident..watching it on TV freaked me out and pretty much convinced my parents that I shouldnt play hockey as a career. Another guy was Norman Leveille back in the 80's I think who suffered something similar

"After the final hockey game, Bruins stars from several generations took a final skate around the ice. Although greats such as Orr, Esposito, Neely, and Bourque were all there, the center of attention was Norman Leveille, who suffered a cerebral hemorrhage during his one year with the Bruins. Thirteen years later, Leveille walks with great difficulty but on the ice that night, a reporter wrote, "Levielle held his cane in front of him, while Bourque, facing him, pulled him around the ice; the crowd clamored in approval as eyes throughout the Garden filled up with tears . . . memories were still being made and dreams realized at rickety old Boston Garden.""

  • Well you could see that coming. Eventually all those slow starts were going to come back to burn them. Even with that third-period barrage, once they got three, I felt that was that. It's alarming that a lot of the recent goals against are either breakaways or off turnovers. Two breakaways tonight and three goals of turnovers, including that old puck gets caught in the skates at the point on the power play nonsense.
