No, I say it for particular teams, like the Devils.
That and they're playing a horrific defensive game lately (over their 4 game western road trip they were outshot at least 2-1, good thing the goaltenders showed up).

Only wish they didn't take as many penalties and put in few when they have the man advantage. Other than that looks like they got their house in order to qualify for the tournament.

whats funny is, many of these guys had an off season job, during offseason , to make extra $ for themselves or their families.

    Un-frickin- believable !

    this schedule blows for us.
i guess it is good for the team to restup- but the waiting for the next game sucks ! bigtime !

    from the Bulletin
TheNYRs have signed free agent forward Justin Soryal, 20, of the Peterborough Petes of the OHL. The 6'2, 210-pounder has 15 goals, 22 assists, and 140 penalty minutes this season, and in 198 career OHL games has 44 goals, 53 assists, and 455 penalty minutes. Draw your own conclusions from those stats. At practice today, Henrik Lundqvist and Brendan Shanahan rested while the injured Paul Mara and Marek Malik skated, but did not practice fully (no contact) -- thanks to Rangers Report from the news from practice.

Sather Wants Jagr Back One Way or Another [Updated]
Glen Sather said he'd be mad if he could not re-sign Jaromir Jagr to a contract for next season, according to an interview reported by the Czech news site iDNES that was conducted last week when the Ranger GM was in Prague to officially announce that the Rangers and Tampa Bay Lightning will open their 2008-09 season there with a two game set. Sather said Jagr was still an excellent player and was relied upon not only as a 600-goal scorer and future Hall of Famer, but also as team captain. He said he is close friends with Jagr, respects his talent, intelligence, character, and sense of humor, and called him a great guy. Despite Jagr’s uncharacteristically low offensive numbers, Sather insisted that he is still a great player having a good season.

While admitting that no contract talks with Jagr were ongoing and still holding out hope that Jagr could reach one of the triggers that would automatically extend his current contract into next season (though that seems like a near-impossibility at this point), Sather said he expects to eventually make a contract proposal that is mutually acceptable for both sides before Jagr becomes a free agent on July 1st. He said that Jagr told him that he’d like to finish his career in New York and wouldn’t want to play for any other NHL team, which he believes are good signs that Jagr can be re-signed. Acknowledging that things could change at any moment as a result of contract negotiations and salary cap considerations, Sather said the Rangers would do everything possible to keep other Czech players on the team along with Jagr.

Thanks to our friend DaTeL of NewYorkRangers.cz for translating the Sather interview. Since it was a case of an English interview translated into Czech and then back into English, we chose to paraphrase Sather’s comments rather than quote them directly.

We hope Andrew Peters got his money's worth for his blows to Colton Orr from the bench at the end of regulation time in the Rangers' shootout win in Buffalo on Monday -- he was suspended for one game for his act, which will cost him $2800 plus a tip to his doorman. The Sabres won't miss him in their game tonight against the Penguins. No news on whether referee Bill McCreary was fined or suspended for his embarrassing work in the same game. McCreary has worked eight Ranger games this season and has called things evenly, with the Rangers having 40 power plays compared to 41 for their opponents. But in the six games he officiated since the Rangers got a 10-2 edge in advantages during a 6-1 win in Toronto in late December, the Rangers have been shorthanded 36 times while being awarded 25 power plays. In his last two games (Buffalo and Carolina), the Rangers had six power plays, their opponents 14 -- in their four games in between, they were shorthanded 16 times and had 12 power plays.

Elsewhere, John Dellapina of the Daily News looks at how the Rangers got to where they are now, Steve Zipay of Newsday looks at where they might be going when the postseason starts, and Larry Brooks of the Post looks at how they have prepare for that near-certain eventuality. Slap Shot tells us that New York beat Buffalo in the ratings game as well as on the scoreboard. Howlings reports that the Wolf Pack have signed Brad Brown, who had been playing for Florida in the ECHL -- Brown was one of the first players acquired by Glen Sather when he first came to New York along, coming from Chicago with Michael Grosek in exchange for locker room pariah Stephane Quintal. The 32-year-old first round bust has not played in the NHL since the lockout and is not a threat to make it back to New York with the Rangers currently close to the maximum contract level of 50. Prospect Park sings the blues about Tuesday action among Ranger prospects.

Soryal May Be For Real :
As we slog though another week of waiting for Ranger weekend hockey, the biggest news in Rangerland is a small move with the potential of some day having an impact at the NHL level. The Rangers' signing of free agent junior Justin Soryal may seem like little more than adding to the organizational depth in, uh, slugging. But if we can trust the scouting reports we got from Peterborough, where Soryal plays for the OHL's Petes, there may be more to the rugged winger than the kind of highlights you can see on video at Howlings -- in addition to being a fighter and enforcer, Soryal has shown some ability to contribute more to his team than fisticuffs.

"Justin Soryal was a 10th-round draft pick of the Peterborough Petes from the Georgina Ice of the OHA Central Junior C league," Mike Davies, who covers the Petes for the Peterborough Examiner, told Jess Rubenstein. "Not many players make the jump from junior C to major junior hockey at the OHL level, but Justin overcame those long odds with some hard work and toughness. The past two seasons, Soryal has been almost everybody's choice as the toughest player in the OHL. Last season, playing with current Philadelphia Flyer Steve Downie and Calgary Flames draft pick Daniel Ryder, Justin began to show more facets to his game, putting up a career high 26 goals."

Indeed, Soryal showed exactly that in his first game as Ranger property, scoring a goal during last night's 4-3 loss to Brampton, a team led by top Ranger prospect Bobby Sanguinetti. "He's played two years on the Petes' top line and is an honest player who will work hard in the corners and pot the odd goal," Davies goes on to say. "I remember former Petes' coach Dick Todd, who Rangers fans will remember as an assistant coach on the 1994 Stanley Cup team, telling me that Soryal showed signs in practice during his first two years that if given the chance, he had good enough hands to contribute as more than a tough guy. He's shown the last two years that that is the case."

If that is the case, Soryal may have a real chance to eventually reach the NHL. The Ranger organization has shown that it will only dress enforcers who can contribute more than just that to the team. They had to be patient and teach Colton Orr to be that kind of player, and the truth is that his knock-out punch of Todd Fedoruk is what keeps him in the line-up, not his shut-down defense of Sidney Crosby. With more apparent skill, at least at the junior level, Soryal may be able to fit that bill down the road for the Rangers. He will no doubt finish this, his last season in juniors and then start his pro development in the post-season with Hartford or Charlotte. For more on Soryal, see Prospect Park, which also has reports on other junior action last night.

The Rangers are not likely to fall into a trap tonight against the Panthers. In addition to their own determination to improve on their standing, they know the Panthers have newfound playoff aspirations of their own, having won five straight games, giving up a total of six goals in those five games. And they will be seeking a measure of revenge for the 5-0 pasting they took in the Garden three weeks ago --"They spanked us in their building," Olli Jokinen said. "It's payback time." Tomas Vokoun, who has been in net for only the last two Florida wins, is expect to be in net tonight -- he has given up 12 goals on 84 shots in his three games against the Rangers this season.

The Panthers are giving them hell tonight, however they tend to fade late in the 3rd period. They did that late in their home game against the Bruins.

Perhaps this hiccup was for the best -- perhaps the Rangers needed a bit of a wake-up call, to come back down to earth and remember that it is possible for them to lose a game. Hopefully, with a second chance against the last place Lightning tomorrow night in Tampa, they get to demonstrate that the lesson was quickly learned. In the meantime, Ranger fans find themselves flabbergasted at wishing a speedy recovery for Marek Malik so that we don't have to witness too much more of the Backman-Strudwick pairing -- after a decent start to this game, Backman was a one-man mistake spree over the last half (except on the game-winner -- he was all over his man, Rosti Olesz, with Strudwick the one who let Olli Jokinen loose).
