Brian Leetch Night will be held on January 24th vs. Atlanta. Thanks to Daniel Akeson for alerting us to this news. With little else going on in Rangerland as we await training camp and the upcoming season, we must turn to Page Six of the Post for Sean Avery's counterpoint to Elisha Cuthbert and Paris Hilton. Artem Anisimov played again in Canada's 8-1 dismantling of Canada as the Super Series moved to Canada -- see reports here and here.

The Four Habs Fans have acknowledged that the mini-war that broke out between our two sites was the result of their publication of a private E-mail. No apology was necessary beyond that, but thanks to those guys for being stand-up guys. So I guess they'll take it with the appropriate sense of humor when we post our "Ten Things We Hate About the Habs" column tomorrow.

    NY Post - DUMPING RIGHTS

September 5, 2007 -- DESPITE reports to the contrary, New York Rangers bad boy Sean Avery claims he dumped Elisha Cuthbert, not the other way around. Avery was bragging to pals about his conquests since leaving Cuthbert during the party for Amy Sacco at the LG Beach House in Malibu last weekend while playing beer pong and hitting on other blondes. Also at the party were billionaires Vivi Nevo, Meir Tepper and Russell Simmons.

Maybe the Rangers aren't participating in this? I can't find on the Canucks web site where I saw this.....I'm a pack holder here (almost impossible to get tickets here otherwise) so I don't follow the single game ticket sales too closely....but if you look at this link you will see virtually all of the away teams tickets are on sale the 15th.

It's probably the same douche, but enjoy anyway.

Up First: The red-headed stepchild of the Original Six, the New York Rangers.

10 Things I Hate About the New York Rangers

    10. That pyjama top jersey in the banner pick that they wore in the 70's. Have some dignity!

    9. Continued veneration of this lousy history: 4 Cups since 1926, including 54-year drought. All time team includes Mike Richter and Vic Hadfield. Top ten scorers in Rangers history include Steve Vickers, Ron Greschner, and Adam Graves.

    8. Original home for aging, overpaid former stars. See Esposito, Phil. Dionne, Marcel. Lafleur, Guy. Kurri, Jari. Messier, Mark (Version 2.1).

    7. Sean Fucking Avery.

    6. Lousy, loud, jerk-off, fair weather fans who claim they are the best in the world. In the words of our New York dwelling friend DS, "The Yankees, Mets, Giants, Jets, Knicks, Nets, Devils, and Brooklyn Cyclones Triple A baseball team all have a more loyal fanbase than the Rangers. Rangers tickets are easy to get. It's only hard when the Isles, Devils or Flyers are in town." (DS ended up surrounded by other Habs fans at the last NY/Montreal tilt.)

Note to Rangers fans: Just being loud, obnoxious, and potentially psychotic doesn't make you the best. It may make you the worst, however. (Wipe that smug look off your faces, Flyers fans. This brush is wide enough to paint you too.)

    5. Ronnie Duguay's stupid afromullet and "sex symbol" status. Matinee idols should score more than a point a game, methinks.

    4. Ron Greschner married Carol Alt. Read that sentence again.

    3. "The World's Most Famous Arena." The Montreal Forum just called; it would like a word.

    2. They are the traditional weak-sister of the Original Six, the one without a natural rival, best known for 54 years of futility they turned into a "curse", and a penchant for overpriced, over-the hill stars. They exist in the world's largest media market and receive attention far out of proportion to their impact on hockey in general and the New York sports market in particular, which doesn't stop Gary Bettman and whatever local cable access channel is carrying the NHL in the States from pushing them on fans at the expense of far more exciting teams that play in less desirable markets. They continue to employ that smirking, overrated genius Glen Sather, despite the fact that his genius is based on catching lightning in a bottle with two brilliant drafts and having the greatest player ever dropped in his lap, and all he has done is strip mine their farm system and sign more overpriced stars. They and their big-spending brethren nearly destroyed the league. Twice.

    1. Really, that's kind of a stupid name. And it came about because the original owner's name was Tex Rickard. They were jokingly called "Tex's Rangers", and it stuck. Rejected names apparently included the New York Tex's Longhorns, New York Yellow Roses of Tex's, and New York Tex's Mex. Oh, and Madison Square Garden president Rickard originally promised the New York Americans that they would be the only team to play in MSG ... but when he saw how profitable the Amerks were, he asked for a team himself and essentially ran them out of business.

So to recap, the team is named after their backstabbing, weaselly, liar-liar-pants-on-fire first owner ... and it's a dumb name to boot.

    Rangers' season already SRO

    BY JOHN DELLAPINA

If you aren't a Rangers season-ticket holder or a personal friend of Brian Leetch, good luck trying to get into the Garden Jan. 24 to see No. 2 retired.

Overwhelmed by ticket requests for their entire season, the Rangers have only about 350 seats available for any given game. And for Leetch Night, they must set aside every seat not assigned to a season-ticket holder for family members and guests, leaving none available when individual game tickets go on sale Sept. 15.

"It's unbelievable. I've never seen anything like it," Brian Lafemina, the club's senior VP/team sales said of the frenzy to buy Rangers tickets for this season.

To be sure, the July 1 signings of free-agent centers Scott Gomez and Chris Drury have Rangers fans thinking big. But Lafemina said that he had been inundated with season-ticket inquiries even before the Rangers retooled the team that stunned with its success two seasons ago and advanced to within two victories of the Eastern Conference finals last spring.

Most of those inquiries did little more than earn callers a chance to be placed on a waiting list the Rangers plan to construct next month. That is because 96.2% of last year's season subscribers renewed their tickets.

"Last year, we had a very strong year and sold out of season tickets at some point during the season," Lafemina said. "Our renewal rate for this year was through the roof even before the signings. After that, it took off even more.

"We had 15,000 inquiries about season tickets. Since July1, we've had over 4,000 inquiries....I've been here for almost 20years. And even as hot as Knicks tickets have been, it's never been like this."

It didn't figure to be like this as recently as three seasons ago. That was when Rangers season tickets had to be discounted by 10% to keep a promise Garden chairman Jim Dolan made if the team missed the playoffs for a seventh straight season in 2003-04.

It was at the end of that season, during a roster purge of veterans, that GM Glen Sather made the controversial trade that sent Leetch to Toronto for a collection of young players and draft picks. Leetch, who was drafted by the Rangers and went on to become the franchise's greatest defenseman - its greatest player, many would argue - was crushed by the trade as he never wanted to play for any other team.

Rangers coach Tom Renney tried to convince Leetch to return to New York last season and run the team's inconsistent power play. But Leetch didn't believe he could play up to his exacting standards - particularly in a Rangers sweater - and announced his retirement in late May.

On Jan. 24, his No. 2 will become the fifth retired by the Rangers, following the jersey numbers of Rod Gilbert (7), Eddie Giacomin (1), Mike Richter (35) and Mark Messier (11) to the Garden's spoked ceiling.

i cannot imagine anything being more in demand then Messier Night,

but i guess with all the new signings, the games became highly sought immediately.

so perhaps i will not be attending, im sure the Evil Bay will be thru the roof, alltho i do have a few of my season ticket holder friends keeping me in mind should they back out unexpectedly or at the last minute,....
