it kinda stung when he signed with baltimore though.

they were the yankees' biggest rival at the time.

he's a catcher. he was on the 2002 angels but mike napoli has done decently and jeff mathis is a catching prospect so the angels felt he was expendable. He's more of a defensive catcher but his average is better than wil nieves, who will be designated for assignment when Molina arrives.

As for Duncan, he hit 25 home runs for Scranton-Wilkes Barre and when I was talking to him before the game friday, he was telling me how the cab driver from Laguardia took him to Shea instead of Yankee Stadium. He and Andy Phillips are close friends since they played a lot in the minors together.

    Oh you interviewed him? Cool.
    That's a funny story!

We need more pitchers, not catchers, but if he has a good avg. I guess that's good.
Did we win the 2nd game? I saw the end of the 1st game down here on FSN Florida

my dad drives a cab out of Great Neck, he's always at the airport.

That's bogus, I think they just don't want to drive up to the Bx!

i guess the guy didn't realize the passenger was a ballplayer who definitely has the money for a possibly big tip.

also, forgot to mention that sean henn is back in the bullpen.

from scranton-wilkes barre. matt desalvo, who started Game 2 was optioned back to SWB.

They won 17-5. Johnny Damon had three RBI, made three nice catches in left field. Alex Rodriguez hit his 497th career home run and Hideki Matsui homered again and now has eight in his last 16 games.

Luis Vizcaino was awarded the win by the official scorer. That's the case because DeSalvo did not go five and official scoring rules say in cases like that the scorer can award the win to the most effective reliever. Vizcaino becomes the first Yankee to win both games of a doubleheader since 1970.

Thanks! The highlights came on Sportscenter just after I asked about it! I saw the catches, they were impressive.

Whos' that guy Vizcaino that had that hit in Game 1 of the 2001 WS? You know who I"m talking about, the guy that wore like goggles? They had the same last name, I can't think of his 1st name. I wonder if they're related.

I don't know, if wer'e going to make trades I wish we could get some pitching. Moose is losing steam. Clemens..eh.. Wang is the ace and that doesn't make me feel better about the playoffs that we still have to get to :)

unless they plan on giving up phil hughes, joba chamberlain or ian kennedy, then they're not going to get anything major in the pitching department and i doubt any of those guys will be used as trade bait.

it was the 2000 World Series and his middle name is Luis. Clemens is doing well. They need to trade Mussina for a quality hitter. And we'll take our chances with Hughes and Karstens.

    hmm
well, andy is still doing ok, and wang

moose is troubling me, he hasn't been reliable lately, I think he's losing some of his proficiency

well at least now we're only 7 1/2 back. Big Papi is hurt and if we keep things up, I feel optimistic about our chances to regain 1st place, as long as they stay scrappy and keep fighting.
I think it's going to be an interesting 2nd half.

I am so sorry I didn't go into sports reporting. I see SO many female reporters on TV nowadays :( If I had $ to go back to school I would consider doing that.

And everything has to be just right for Mussina. He has so many excuses. He may do well for NL team. Jose Molina is not that much better than Nieves. I guess they got him more for defense. I like female reporters. Most are hot.

nope, most tv guys are annoying. they stick their microphones in and their camara guys never say excuse me when they bump into you. the exception is the YES Network at Yankee games and SNY at the Met games. (i apologize in advance to anyone in TV production since not everyone is like that). A lot of times, you get better answers from guys like Jeter once the TV people are finished.

What are you hearing about what moves they might make for the stretch? The comments I've read seem to suggest they may deal someone from the bullpen. Proctor's name has been mentioned and he probably has the most value other than Mo who wouldn't be available. They seem to have a lot of depth and interchangeable parts there.
Do the Yanks think Duncan can play 1B or is he strictly a DH option. When I saw him with Scranton, he was the DH. I was surprised. I would think you would want him to get as many reps in the field as possible so that he can improve. Makes me think they don't feel he can be an everyday 1B at the MLB level.

cashman has said that everyone but rivera could be traded from the bullpen. i think that's ridiculous, since the only real problem is kyle farnsworth (who could easily be replaced by chris britton from AAA).

in the last few days, proctor has been linked to wilson betemit and ty wigginton. WTF are they gonna do with either of those guys??? they already have better versions of betemit (cairo) and wigginton (phillips) on their roster, so what exactly would be the point of making a move?

all of proctor's problems are the result of overuse by torre. this happens every year. the yankees have a dominant seventh inning reliever, torre decides he's the only guy out of the bullpen who can be trusted, and the pitcher's career is ruined from overuse by the end of the season. remember paul quantrill and tanyon sturtze? same situation. the difference here is that both of those guys were in their late 30s, where as proctor is still a few years younger and should be able to recover. there's no reason to trade him. again, the only real problem is with farnsworth. he needs to go ASAP.

from what i've heard, shelley duncan's glove has been compared to that of jason giambi. he can play 1B if he needs to, but he's generally regarded as a full-time DH.

but that's ok. the yankees don't need another 1B. andy phillips has been one of their most valuable players in july. it kinda bothers me when i hear all these rumors that the yankees are still looking for an upgrade at that position. they're not gonna do any better than phillips right now.
  • unless they plan on giving up phil hughes, joba chamberlain or ian kennedy, then they're not going to get anything major in the pitching department and i doubt any of those guys will be used as trade bait.

any move involving these guys would be a disaster.

i like the jose molina trade. he's generally regarded as one of the better backup catchers in baseball, and he has always played well against the yankees in the past.

jeff kennard was a good pitcher for trenton and could end up in the majors within a year or two, but he wasn't one of the yankees' top prospects.

    bottom of the 5th: 14-3 :D

Another spanking going down in the Bronx today.

I agree with all your points about Proctor. I would rather they didn't move him personally. I'm not really sure what this team needs other than a healthy Phil Hughes to round out the rotation. Their biggest problem this year hasn't been a lack of good players, its been injuries and guys not playing up to their abilities consistently. Right now, they are playing like the Yankees team that we all expected to see this year. Damon is still having problems getting on base, but everyone else seems to have turned it up a notch (including Abreu).

That Duncan kid has some energy doesn't he? I thought he was going to kill the T-Bay infielder covering 2B when he slid between his legs. If he had made contact with him that poor guy probably could have ruled out fathering any kids. I'm surprised Michael Kay didn't bring out the telestrator for the replay.
