He might not get much more per year, but he could make more total by opting out now and signing a 6 or 7 year deal instead of the 3 years remaining in his current contract. If he waited till his mid 30's to become a FA again, he may not get another 3 or 4 year contract at that salary level.

Of course, there are many other reasons why he may want to opt out besides money. The New York spotlight, possibly wanting to return to SS, the possibility that he has a better chance to win elsewhere(Rivera, Posada, and Clemens are all up there in age and FAs-to-be), ect.

The combination of all these things make it logical to test the FA waters.

i love it. all the a-rod hating that's gone on in this thread, and now everyone is salivating at the possibility of having him on their team.

A-Rod got robbed of a hit in the 2nd inning. Got a homerun after Jeter.

Hughes had two hitless innings. So that completes the no-hitter.

But was there any year as an M's fan more exciting than the entire 2001 regular season? 116 wins was just fucking unbelievable!!! What a ride. However, I have never been as depressed and disappointed when we lost in the first round of the playoffs. I was bummed to say the least.

You trade Shef's bat away in order to not have to deal with shit like this and he just keeps talking about the Yanks. Its too bad that he doesn't realize that no one takes anything he says seriously. Maybe then he would just shut up and be satisfied with beating the hell out of baseballs. He is so jealous that he isn't the marquee name. The thing is, he would be one of those guys if he wasn't such a jerk.
On a side note, what a season he is having at the plate.

sheffield's credibility takes a major hit when the only players backing him up are tony womack and kenny lofton. ask darryl strawberry, dwight gooden, cecil fielder and tim raines about joe torre.

Agressive baserunning in the 9th! The only thing I didn't like was Bowa sending Cairo home with no outs. Accardo looked just a tad shaken up out there and his manager didn't even bother going out there to calm him down.

Nice win! Its games like this that we gotta do a better job winning than we did in the first half. The boys are looking good.

i actually sat in the stands tonight instead of covering it. this is a win out of the old playbook. how often do they win when they get no extra base hits and jeter goes 0-for-5.
